Nicklow Narrowly Wins, Tucker Wins, Davis Draws!

Here are the results from the Baltimore Pro Boxing card at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore:

Baltimore, MD middleweight Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow won a narrow eight-round unanimous decision over Suitland, MD's Jayson Champion. Nicklow scored a knockdown early in the first round, which proved to be the margin of victory. Judges Joe Ware and John Gradowski scored the bout 77-74 while Judge Don Risher saw the bout 76-75. Nicklow is now 18-0-1, seven KO's. Champion falls to 4-4, three KO's. This was a rematch of a December 7, 2006 bout that Nicklow won by six-round unanimous decision.

Like the first bout between these two, I thought Champion won the bout, 77-74.

The co-feature saw another win and another first-round TKO for Eldersburg, MD light heavyweight Mark "TNT" Tucker. Tucker stopped Philadelphia, PA's Khalil Farah at 2:19 of the round. Tucker is now 4-0, with four first-round KO's. Farah is now 3-3, one KO.

The controversy of the night was the result of the bout between DC super middleweight Demetrius Davis and undefeated Pittsburgh, PA's Tommy Karpency. With the undefeated record and a future ESPN2 date on the line, Karpency ran into a savvy and experienced buzzsaw in Davis, who definitely fought the best bout in his return from boxing after a nine-year absence.

Unfortunately and yes, inexplicably, Davis was only able to manage an eight-round majority draw. Judge Risher scored the bout 79-73 for Davis but judges Ware and Kenny Chevalier saw a draw at 76-76. I scored the bout 79-74 for Davis, with the second round deemed even. I rarely make comments about the judging on this site, but that was simply a horrible decision. Fortunately for Davis, he did get the draw. That raises his record to 18-14-5, seven KO's while Karpency remains undefeated at 11-0-1, seven KO's.

Elsewhere on the card, cruiserweight Robert "Mac Attack" McConnell, Jr. won his first pro bout, capturing a four-round majority decision over Wilson, NC's Octavius Davis. McConnell is now 1-1 while Davis is 0-1-1.

In a battle of debuting super middleweight Beltway Boxers, Lusby, MD's Keith Gross scored a third-round TKO over Orlando "The Future" Pugh of DC. Gross wore down Pugh until Pugh was unable to come out of his corner for the fourth round.

In the opening bout, Pittsburgh, PA super middleweight Jimmy Lubash won a four-round unanimous decision over John "The Baptist" Terry of Virginia Beach, VA. Lubash is 7-1, three KO's while Terry falls to 2-12-3, one KO.

  1. I am a Jessie fan and I must admit that Jason Champion beat him clearly for the second time. Not to mention that Jason KO'ed him in the amateurs. Jessie, I love you brother and you are going places; however, please do not give Jason another rematch. If that fight was anywhere else besides Baltimore, you would have lost...

  2. the entire crowd was shocked by the decision and it hurts boxing when things like that happen.
Jason Champion - you are a Champion
in my eyes and in everyone elses too.

  3. Josh Hall was a man about it though. He clearly told anyone that would listen that he thought Jessie lost the fight hands down.
Josh you are an honest coach and the people respect that. The only person who thought Jessie won was
    Ray Charles and Jessie's mom.

  4. Jessie, you just keep up the good work and do not let this get you down. Yes you did lose the fight for real, but you are a fairly decent boxer and things will get better. Never give up! U r still my Apple Scrapple from 97!!!

  5. JESSIE SHOULD HOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE AND FULLY ADMIT THAT HE LOST AND GIVE jASON ANOTHER REMATCH. jESSIE JUST NEEDS ANOTHER TRAINER. DANNY KISHNER HAD JESSIE LOOKING LIKE A REAL FIGHTER BACK IN THE DAY. JOSH IS OK BUT THINKS HE KNOWS EVERYTHING.

  6. I was sitting ringside. I was NOT talking to anyone, I had my eyes focused in the space between both fighters. And noted my score after each round.

I was NOT rooting for any fighter.
Nicklow did NOT lose that very close fight. I think everyone remembers the last round more vividly than the knockdown and the close middle rounds.

It was a very close fight and I could care NOT, who won, Nicklow won and justice was served.

    Just my humble opinion :>)

  12. Anyone who thought Jessie won that fight was either blind, drunk or has a few leaks in the attic.
That kid from DC beat him like a bicycle theif. It was so obvivious that Jessie boy was emmbarrassed himself. I heard that same kid knocked Jessie out cold in the amateurs. It was a saturday night and Jessie woke up thinking he was at Kings Dominion on Sunday. He thought he just fell off of the Ferris Wheel.I almost laid an egg when the decision was read. My asshole was hurting;all squinched up. Jason Champion you are the real winner and everyone knows. Ask Jessie's girlfriend and she will tell you about her soaked and wet wrangler jeans. It was hill larry us. Did you see the look on Josh Hall's face when he got the decision? Atleast Josh admits that Jessie really lost. He is an honorable guy. I rrespectful him dearly.

  16. Reading a comment from someone like south paw herc who doesn’t understand boxing doesn’t bother me in the least. There’s a distinct difference between an amateur and a pro boxer, just as there’s a huge contrast between an amateur and a professional teacher. There’re a lot of laymen out there who observed my teachings over the years in order to learn about the sweet science. The blogger should have stuck around awhile because he’s, obviously, still learning. The sport of boxing is much more complicated than most realize. A professional trainer is proficient in detecting the boxer’s movement, balance, rotation, and weight distribution. The so called “experts” who think they know all about it, possess no experience that would lend credence to their statements. I DON’T have a problem, because I DO know everything about boxing. If you’re a boxing fan, don’t condemn in anonymity. Have the guts to back up your negative critique with your identity.
