There's a new head of the District of Columbia Boxing and Wrestling Commission. His name is Jason E. Turner (above), a 38-year-old native of DC. Turner was appointed by DC Mayor Adrian Fenty to succeed Dr. Arnold W. McKnight who passed away on July 31 after serving as Commission chair for 12 years.
Turner has a business and sales background that, he says, will help relaunch the brand for boxing, wrestling and mixed martial arts for the Nation's Capitol.
"I'm very excited about working in this capacity," Turner said. "My management skills and my ability to work with collective groups of people will help in this position."
Turner called 2008 a "rebuilding and recycling year" for boxing in the District as the Commission looks to work with local promoters as well as the business and private sector to regulate events for the city.
In related Commission news, Steven A. Bullock recently announced his resignation from the Commission. Bullock was a commissioner for two years, beginning in 2005. In a letter read at the most recent commission meeting, Bullock wrote that his term ended this month and he would not seek reappointment.

Congratulations on your new appointment as the DC Boxing Commissioner. DC has not done that many shows in recent years, because of the cost associated with a boxing event in the District. What is your strategic plan of attack for FY08 in regards to professional boxing? And, in 08 will the DC Boxing Commission negotiate better rates, or reduce rates with area facilities/DC Buildings to reduce the outrageous cost associated with boxing events? And last but not least, most fighters do not have medical insurance and the medical requirements and testing costs are forced on the promoters. What is your plan to review the medical requirements and possible accepted medicals from other states…such as Maryland or VA? I would propose, since the District is not a State, DC could use medicals requirements from other States, and just require paying the licensing fee. Just a thought to make DC boxing friendly to promoters.

What's the likelihood there will be at least one pro-am show in DC? What is your plan to attract more events to the city?
I'm very exciting about this work because I know this man have a lot skills to overcome his horrible situation also he's a cool guy.
