Amateur boxing champion and Salisbury, MD middleweight Fernando Guerrero will make his professional debut on Saturday, December 8 at the Fitzgerald's Casino and Hotel in Tunica, MS. The 20-year-old originally from the Dominican Republic was a US National champion in 2007 and made it to the semifinals of the US Olympic Trials this past summer.
Guerrero has also signed a promotional contract with Prize Fight Boxing of Memphis, TN -- the same company that promotes Beltway stars The Peterson Brothers, Reginald Taylor and Ty Barnett, who is also scheduled to be on the December 8 card. Prize Fight also promotes former world champion Zab Judah.
In a press release, Prize Fight's President Russ Young said the following:
“After watching Fernando fight in Colorado Springs I quickly realized he was the hottest prospect I had seen in years. He possesses the speed, power and skills to become a World Champion, I knew I had to make it a top priority to sign Guerrero to the Prize Fight stable. The process took five months, but with the help of Barry Hunter and Hal Chernoff, we were able to come to terms on a promotional agreement.
"Under the tutelage of Barry Hunter, trainer to the super duo world Ranked and Prize Fight promoted Peterson Brothers, Fernando will be on a fast track to building his career."

Huge Congratulations Fernando! I was extremely impressed with you when I first saw you fight in The Mayor's Cup last year. Think it's fantastic you are working with Barry Hunter's group. Skies the limit!

There is a good possibility that Barry Hunter will be working with Hal with Fernando.
Hal Chernoff will remain head trainer of Fernando. Hal is a good, honest man that Fernando trust.
I assumed Hal would remain Fernando's Trainer, and I am equally impressed with him, was just glad to hear that they would be working with Barry Hunter.

Thanks for the well wishes. Although I will stay with Fernando, Barry Hunter, besides being a close friend is very good at what he does. There is a very good chemistry between the head bangers gym and us. It goes back to a time when Lamont and Ant were about 70lbs each and Boogie fought amateur. I learned long ago to surround yourself with good people that you can trust. As far as getting credit for who does what, that is not important to me. The boxer is the focal point in this game and my first job is to do everything I can to help him succeed, even if it were to mean moving out of the corner someday so long as we benefited from it. I still have an Amateur Boxing program to run so I will just have to play it by ear. After the long process of talking to some of the bigger names in the sport that represent management and promotional companies, the joint descision to go with Prizefight Promotions seemed like the best fit for what we wanted to do and how we want to do it. The added experience and success that Barry and Boogie bring into the mix did play a part in the decision making and now that all those loose ends are wrapped up we can move forward with out worrying about any of that. I may see his trainers this weekend. I believe they're the same folks who work with Alexander Johnson.
Alexander is not fighting this weekend, but I usually run into his handlers at other cards.
Gary, sorry for the derail, but do you happen to have any info about the quality of the Pikesville Armory card on the 7th? Will you be attending?
I will definitely be in Pikesville on Friday. On paper, this is as good a card as Jake Smith has had all year. The Tim Coleman-Martinus Clay bout is intriguing as is the rematch between Jessie Nicklow and Anthony Little.
Quick update on that card. Lawrence Jones of DC is off the card. He was scheduled to take on Elias Bouloubassis, who will now battle an out of towner named Pete Guthy.
As I said on the most recent Post-Fight wrap-up, Henry Mayes will now take on John Terry of Portsmouth, VA.
yea he is trained by the same handlers...so gary please find out..I seen him at the western trails and midwestern trails...im a promoter jus intrested in how his career is going ..so please find out

yea ..that would be nice if u did find out the african worriors plans and to see when he's turning pro I hear he trains at surgar rays everyday from my understanding...
