Tony Thompson was looking to stay busy and go some rounds, but apparently he couldn't.
The WBO's number one ranked heavyweight contender stayed on that path with a second round TKO over Cliff Couser last night in Lemoore, CA. According to Fightnews.com, Thompson, the mandatory challenger for the winner of the October 13 Ibragimov-Holyfield heavyweight title clash, connected with a series of hard right hands that finally brought Couser down to the canvas at 1:49 of the second.
Thompson is now 31-1 with 19 KO's and has won 27 bouts in a row.

Wow. I looked up Tiger's record on Boxrec; I'd love to see him in a rematch against the guy that beat him.

He lost to Eric Kirkland (18-2, 14 KO total) by unanimous decision on 7/7/2000. Kirkland's last fight was 3/24/06.

Mkes no sense at all. Get back is fine, but only if the guy that beat you went somewhere. Tony is at the cusp of something tha Kirkland only dreamed of.
I agree, fighting Kirkland does nothing for him. Tony was screwed on a title shot that Holyfield got and will lose. Tony will be a champion very soon. And turn out to be better than that Mithchell, Joppy and Holmes all rolled into one. In fact, he will be a great one like Mark Johnson was.

If we are, how can you say he was just fair? The guy won three world titles (only two other Beltway Boxers -- Sugar Ray Leonard and Simon Brown -- have done that)
He made the best flyweights in the world at that time (Tapia, Romero, Arbachkov, et al) run away from him. And he was consistently ranked in the top 10 pound for pound!
He is a future hall of famer.
Oh, I know Tiger's way ahead of Kirkland, but you gotta wonder (or I do anyway) if that single loss is gnawing at Tiger...

OK, maybe not gnawing; I know I'D like to see him get payback. Anyone know when he might be fighting for the title (according to Boxrec, Holyfield's fight is 10/13)?
i remember at the time Tony lost that fight in Massachusetts, tom browner saying that there was homecooking involved in that decision. Tom said tony beat the kid outright, but regardless it was a fight Tony should have never taken that fight at that point in his career.
At any rate, Tony is in a different stratosphere now, and for anyone that knows him personally knows he couldn't care less about that loss now.
I just can't wait for him to finally get his opportunity to show the world that he's the next great American heavyweight champion.
