Buchanan Bounced From 'Contender!'

Capitol Heights, MD's Henry "Sugar Poo" Buchanan has been sent home from "The Contender." Series host Sugar Ray Leonard explained Buchanan's absence as having to deal with a "personal matter."

The real reason is that, for the second time, Buchanan was involved in a legal issue while taping the show in California.

I say the second time because from what my sources tell me, this is a different issue than the legal issue Buchanan was involved in after the ShoBox Super Middleweight tournament last year.

Buchanan was picked up last year by federal marshalls after Buchanan was arrested for assault. No word yet on what this current legal issue is.

The bottom line is that Buchanan has blown another golden opportunity to make a qualified name for himself. Not too many young boxers have had the opportunity to make two consecutive national television appearances that could truly benefit him. There are so many boxers who would give an arm to have an opportunity on "The Contender." You can't feel sorry for Buchanan but it is a shame.

Sugar Poo told Magirt that he would spar some guys but not others. To be frank, he was scared to spar certain guys. He was looking for an easy way out.
Furthermore, Sugar Poo is not the sharpest tool in the shed. He actuslly made up a ryme concerning him and Ray Leonard and was walking around there all day saying the ryme out-loud.
The ryme was about Sugar Poo was the real sugar not Leonard. You can read all about it in the LA Times.

real sugar? instead, we should all call him REAL STUPID !!

Poo is still the man in my book.
He whipped Joppy's ass twice.
He is good for boxing...

The difference is that Joppy made good when opportunities were there for him. Buchanan did not!

I find it a little hard to believe that Buchanan was taken from the show simply because he mouthed off.

If anything, the producers and hosts would have used that to show why some people don't make it in this business. I think Buchanan would have been made an example of and I don't think Leonard would have called it "personal reasons."

Again, my source (at ESPN) said it was a legal matter, different than the one he got involved in last year after he was eliminated from the Super Middleweight tournament.

I would be careful reporting it was a legal matter until you have corroborating evidence. One ESPN source without attribution or proof isn't enough. In this day and age, when blogs are often considered media, you don't want to open yourself up to a Sugar Poo lawsuit because you didn't have airtight facts.

Was Buchanan on Peepee's team? It will only be so fitting for him to be coached by a real criminal. As the real criminal Correa is not Peepee Correa -his real name is Joe Sanders, a 100% non- hispanic, non- Puerto Rican, former bad guy who changed his name and identity. But as the great Cus Damato once said, people who are born square don't die round (or something like that). In other words he is still a bad guy and still does bad things. If you ask him he will tell you. He is proud of his bad guy nature. If only the suits at ESPN had done a background check, this low life would not be screaming that hoohah crap about pressure and the pipe. I guess he likes those pipe images as thats how he survives, taking advantage of people on the pipe. Please make him go away. Or at the very least shut up.

Would love "concerned citizen" to do some more 'splainin' about "Peepee." What, my man, are you talking about?

Rhyme, spelled rhyme. Thanks

Seems like his tools are sharp to me. If he want to fight and wants a man to have to figure him out during a fight if a man can, why would he want sparring with him. Let's sharpen our tools.

Pray for that brother.

But did anyone see Gary Russell on Sports Talk with Glenn Harris tonight? Channel 8 for Cox viewers.

An olympian on the right track!

Good job, Gary! "Stay motivated!"

I concur with Digital that there has to be more to it than Sugar Poo running his mouth. Remember, this series was created by (and probably still produced by, but I'm not certain of that) Mark Burnett.

If you've seen any of Burnett's other shows, most notably Survivor, you know that as far a production value is concerned, running ones mouth is a good thing. He wants you to feel passionate about the contestants, either in a good light or a bad one, it doesn't matter.

Think back to Season 1 of The Contender. If excessive bloviation were a ticket off the program, the Ahmed Kaddour wouldn't have made it past the premier, much less be invited back after his first defeat for a second humiliation.

Being around Sugar Poo is like having a thorn in your side.

Just watching him train and spar is grating on the senses. It's all about "wow, look at me..."

And then he opens that mouth of his, and a sudden feeling of blessedness covers you knowing that maybe you're not that stupid after all...

he runs his mouth, he runs his mouth and he runs his mouth then he runs his mouth some more. Thats all he does, runs his mouth!!!!!!Thats sugar poo !!!

Is it really like that? Is this guy really that big of a jerk and that bad of a guy?

Anonymous said...

No, he's a shithead but not that bad of a guy. He runs his mouth for attention. He thinks he's selling himself.

Poo can be a loud-mouthed jerk, but at the root of all the BS is a pretty good, cool guy (if you have patience and clarity to deal with it). He has few people in his life that can guide him in the right direction so he often acts before he thinks. Those that have tried often grow weary...Wish him the best though..hopefully he'll learn this time b/c opportunities don't last forever....
