Welcome Home Celebration for Gary Russell, Jr. Tonight!

There will be a welcome home celebration for the Beltway's newest Olympian boxer -- Gary Russell, Jr. -- tonight at the Delight Skating Rink (that's the Crystal Skating Rink for you old-time area folks) located at 3132 Branch Avenue in Temple Hills, MD. The event begins at 8 PM and all are welcome.

If you would like to meet Gary's plane, it is scheduled to come in to Reagan National Airport at 1:50 PM.

Congratulations also go to Robert "Herb" Martin, who will serve as one of the coaches for the US Olympic Boxing team in Beijing, China!

By the way, Gary Russell, Jr. joins an impressive list of Beltway Boxers who have represented the United States in the Olympics:

Norvell Lee -- Gold medalist in 1952.

Sugar Ray Leonard -- Gold medalist in 1976

Charles Mooney -- Silver medalist in 1976

Louis "Heidi" Curtis -- 1976 Olympic Team member

Andrew Maynard -- Gold medalist in 1988

Clarence Vinson -- Bronze medalist in 2000.

  6. Way to go Gary Jr, isn't that something that when a local fighter achieves the once in a life time opportunity of making the Olympics, that people aren't going out of their way to congratulate him, but there would be 50 or 60 comments for something negative. Give the kid his props.

  9. I think what he's saying is that there are only a few people congratulating him and there should be more.

  11. Gary Russell, jr. is a true champion, who is intelligent, articulate and believes in God. He attributes his success to his father and mother. He will excel as far as he wants to, in the sport of boxing. The press conference celebration was well deserved for an Olympian boxer, whose dream is getting closer and closer. Perfect role model for any youth, worldwide!!

  12. Watch out, boxing fans!! We could see more Russell brothers>> Allan, Antonio ans Autuanne as Olympian pugilist in the future. Gary, Jr, the 2008 Olympian rep. has set a trend. These brothers can rumble, and I mean rumble. They have had countless of walkovers, due to the opponents fearfulness. I can see why!!!
