Gary Russell, Jr. Celebrates Olympic Berth!

Just like the championship journey that earned him a berth on the US Olympic Boxing team, the celebration for Capitol Heights, MD's Gary Russell, Jr. was first class as well.

Russell and his family arrived at the DeLight Skating Rink in Temple Hills in a loooong stretch Hummer limo and got out on a red carpet to the front door. Russell greeted family and friends throughout the evening, took and signed pictures and answered questions from the media.

During the festivities, Team Russell sat down with me for this audio interview:

Gabcast! Boxing Along the Beltway #81 - Gary Russell, Jr. Describes Olympian Week!

The Beltway's newest Olympian -- Gary Russell, Jr. -- along with his father, Gary Sr., coach Robert "Herb" Martin and conditioning coach "Pretty Boy" Floyd Seymour talk about their week in Houston for the US Olympic Trials and tell some incredible stories.

  2. The Russell Tribe is a unique one. Through all adversity, they are a tight knit household, who believes in God, discipline and hard work. Gary, Sr. sons duck no opponents and we wish Gary, Jr. the very best in China, and life after boxing. Congressman Albert Wynn, Senator Britt, Senator Currie, and Senate President Mike Miller, and a host of other PG County business owners were delighted to meet the champ @ Wynn's birthday bash. Is good to know your history. We were long overdue for a Maryland rep. regarding the Olympics in boxing. Proudly to say, we have Gary Russell, Jr. the pride and joy of Capitol Heights, Maryland.
