Russell Jr. Loses in Opening-Round Olympic Trial Bout!

Capitol Heights, MD 119-pounder Gary Russell Jr. lost his opening-round contest at the US Olympic Trials in Houston, TX. According to USABoxing.org, the bout was a nail-biter with Russell losing to Roberto Marraquin of Dallas, TX, 18-17.

Russell was leading the bout 8-2 going into the second round, but Marraquin came back to hold a one-point lead heading into the fourth and final round. Marraquin was able to hold on to the victory.

Russell now will compete through the challenger's bracket in order to receive an Olympic berth.

Gary, since this is his first loss in the U.S. in 3 years, i don't think its unreasonable to think he could breeze though the losers bracket and get back to the finals. If he did that, assuming Marraquin still had no losses and was in the finals, would Gary have to then beat him twice? Also, do you know how many boxers are in each bracket? Thanks.

8 in each bracket and yes Gary would have to see Maaraquin again.
Gary has to win 6 bouts in a row because he is now in the losing bracket. Ross it is unreasonable to think that he can just breeze his way through. In fact, that was the problem in the first place-thinking he could just breeze through. Oh I think Gary is the best 119 pounder we have in the USA. However, the other seven think otherwise. Gary has a tough way to go, and I hope he pulls it off. We need him to win it all!!!
