Beltway Boxing in the News!

There are a number of online articles that focus on the Beltway Boxing scene.

RingsideReport.com, the site created by "Bad" Brad Berkwitt, has a nice piece on NABO Heavyweight champion Tony "The Tiger" Thompson written by Daniel "Tex" Cohen. Here is the link:

The other two articles actually quote me in them.

John Buhl, a former Fightnews colleague of mine, now writes for insidefighting.com, a site that does cover boxing, but its main focus is mixed martial arts. Buhl writes a nice piece on the late Dr. Arnold McKnight. The link is here: although it doesn't seem to be working at the moment (their fault, not mine)

Then, there's Carla Peay, the assistant sports editor for the Washington Informer. She debuts her general sports column for the paper with a look at the Beltway Boxing scene. This is the link:

Enjoyed the articles. How do you know this "Bad" Brad guy?

"Bad" Brad Berkwitt and I have been friends for about 10 years. He used to write for Fightnews and we used to cover a lot of the local cards together.

He has written a great book called "Boxing Interviews of a Lifetime." He has done hundreds of outstanding interviews with current and former boxers as well as celebrities who are big boxing fans. Go to www.ringsidereport.com and check out his interviews and how to buy his book!

Good piece by Carla (I've not read the others yet), but is it me or did she not mention Ding-a-Ling-Man?

someone told me today that Joe Hensley feels very confident about his fighter(George Rivera) fighting Lawrence Jones.Big mistake ! You have made big mistake when you sign that contract. Jones is different caliber fighter than Rivera. Dont be too confident Joe.
After the fight, Lawrence Jones will stay as undefeated fighter.

George Rivera is in the absolute best shape of his entire life so we have a right to feel confident. In fact, this is the first time in Rivera's short professional career that he has had a full training camp. Rivera is training in the mountains at altitude and he's in 10 round shape right now. George understands the importance of this fight. When he wins, he could go on to do some great things in boxing. If he loses, he could just turn out to be another guy. I think that Rivera has what it takes to be a special fighter and we know that Lawrence Jones will be a tough test, but as a wise man once said, "You don't get anywhere fightin' bums!" Lawrence Jones is no bum but we know that "War Time" George Rivera will emerge victorious! I just want to tell Han Kim thanks for the opportunity to come up there to fight on your show. We are looking forward to the support of George's fan base: La Familia - Viva Puerto Rico! El Capitan's got our back! Han, if anyone made a mistake it was you when you approached me about George Rivera taking this fight. We know what we're doing. We've got intel on your boy. We've got some people up there who have our back who gave us the inside scoop on Jones. We're going to be 100% prepared for the fight on August 25th and we're coming home with a victory!

BOY? Did you call Lawrence a boy? When 25th comes, there is no boy in that ring. One is gonna take the beating and that aint gonna be Lawrence Jones. You make sure George Rivera shows up for the fight at Lee high school not at the ABC. Han Kim-

Han,

Don't worry, we'll be there. "War Time" will be there, La Familia will be there, and Team Rivera will be there. And we know it's at Lee High School and not the ABC. Your boy has never been hit like Rivera is going to hit him. Jones won't be able to take what George is going to bring on the 25th. I'm not going to give away our game plan but let's just say your boy is tailor made for Rivera. This one won't go to the judge's hands. I will agree with you about one thing. You said that George Rivera and Lawrence Jones are a different caliber of fighter. You are definitely right about that. George Rivera fights at a much higher level than Lawrence Jones and on August 25th you will see first hand how talented Rivera is. This is the best George Rivera that has ever stepped in the ring. Lawrence Jones is going to get knocked out!

Thanks MR Williams. I just went to his site and book marked it. I hope Tony finally gets a shot.

Man, I just hope the actually fight between Jones and Rivera is as good as this trashtalking!

Come on out and check it out for yourself ACW. It should be a great show and George Rivera will take care of business on August 25th! Also, I've seen the comments pertaining to a cruiserweight tournament among local prospects featuring Juan Carlos Robles, Mike Dietrich, Bobby Gunn, and possibly a few others - Willis Lockett perhaps. I also promote Juan Carlos Robles and I will be watching Gunn's fight and Lockett's fights on August 25th with keen interest and we could be open to making those fights in the future. Back to George Rivera. Han Kim started all this stuff when he came on this blog and said that Jones was going to beat Rivera. I really don't have a problem with that, Han is just supporting his fighter. But I've got to have my fighter's back and I can't let that challenge go un-noticed. I'm sure Lawrence Jones is a good guy, as is Han Kim and we appreciate the opportunity to the on the show on August 25th. "War Time" George Rivera is going to steal the show and take care of business when he knocks out Lawrence Jones!

Joe Hensley is just talking from his heart, supporting his fighter. The truth will show on the 25th. KO win by Jones, thats guranteed !
Bobby Gunn has a big fight planned for him at Montreal in October or November. Willis Lockett is already down to 180 lbs and he will be fighting at light heavyweight. Emmanuel Nwodo will be ready, would you like to fight him with Robles? Let me know, we can sign the contract at the Jones- rivera fight. Han Kim-

Anonymous said...

Maybe Nwodo sometime next year because Nwodo is one hell of a fighter and he can punch like a beast. Plus, he's got a lot of experience. My guy Robles is only 9 and 0. When he gets to 16 and 0, we can talk about that one. But Dietrich is 10 and 0, Juan is 9 and 0, and Gunn is 17 and 3 but he hasn't really fought anyone. Nwodo is far more established, in my opinion, than Gunn. If Lockett is 180, then technically, that's still a cruiserweight. If he gets down to 175, then that's another story. Lawrence Jones won't make it through the fight with George Rivera. You'll see. Thanks for the opportunity to come up there and knock out one of your guys! See you soon!

NO, THANK YOU. FOR COMING ALL THE WAY UP TO SPRINGFIELD TO GET KNOCKED OUT. LETS MAKE A BET JONES PURSE VS RIVERAS PURSE. THE BET IS BETWEEN YOU AND I NOT FIHTERS MONEY. OK??????? I AM HERE JOE!
HAN KIM-

Anonymous said...

I'll take that bet! I'll take a sucker's money every time! First, you set us up with an easy fight when you offered Lawrence Jones for George Rivera! I could hardly believe what I was hearing but we jumped all over it. (Plus, you're paying us pretty well too. Thanks!) Now, it's almost too good to be true! It's almost too easy! You want to give us some more money? You're darn right I'll back Rivera! Just have my money on fight night, large bills, cash! Jones is getting stretched! He can't take what Rivera is going to bring in to the ring on the 25th!

Now this is the type of threads I enjoy reading, two promoter's backing their fighter's.Goog job Joe and Han.

Anonymous said...

hey Joe, Lawrence Jones is on vacation now days until wednsday this week. I told him not to train til the day before the fight because Rivera cant fight. Easy money, bring all in $100 bills.
Han Kim-

Anonymous said...

Well I hope that Lawrence Jones has some vacation time left for after the fight because he's going to need some time off after George Rivera is through with him!

Anonymous said...

Joe, I've already got my ticket.

By the way, when's Robles returning to the ring?

Anonymous said...

That's right! Sick Leave! Let's hope Lawrence Jones has some sick leave left because he's going to need at least two weeks off after Rivera is through with him.

To ACW - Glad you're coming! Make sure you introduce yourself to me at the fights. I'd like to meet you and thank you personally for all of the support you have given to boxing in this area.

Robles should be coming back on October 6th on a show near you ACW. Look for information on his fight very shortly.

Joe-
I don't know what you look like, but if you look fro me, I'll be the 5-8/5-9 guy in glasses and yellow George Mason Final 4 t-shirt.

Anonymous said...

ACW -

Okay, will do. Check out our website www.MajorLeagueBoxing.com for pictures of me with Juan Robles, George Rivera, and their trainers Bruce Frank and Art Leneghan.

Anonymous said...

Joe-will do. See you Saturday.

Anonymous said...

So Joe, from those pictures it seems like I should look for the big bald dude.

Anonymous said...

That's right. I'm big, and I'm bald, and I'm pretty bad too. Got that Han Kim?

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

ACW...don't listen to either one of them...they are both sweethearts!

Anonymous said...

Linda-it's cool. Just some friendly trashtalking going on; it amuses me. I just hope the fight lives up to the hype.

Anonymous said...

Linda is right, I'm a big sweetheart. But I can take Han Kim just like George Rivera is going to take Lawrence Jones!

Anonymous said...

Hey, Joe, Han, why don't YOU 2 settle it in the ring?

Anonymous said...

You see where that friendly trash talking leads.

Anonymous said...

I got something for you "Sugar"! You know I'm just messing with you man. Looking forward to a great fight on Saturday, but I do stand decisively behind my man going home with another KO victory under his belt. AND - I'll have a pocket full of cash! How sweet it is!

Han Han Han crazy ass Han. Here you go again wanting to fight everybody. Dont you know that your fighting days are gone? Be wise !

Anonymous said...

Han already started training to fight Hensley. He's doing a one minute drill every night cos he says that's all it'll take.

Actually, if the fight is made, Han says he's going to bill Hensley out of Ohio on the poster... then he knows he got a guaranteed win.

Anonymous said...

Han and I won't fight but we are both really confident in the fighters we promote. This should be a great fight between two young prospects and we feel the night will belong to Rivera. George finished up his sparring for the fight last night and his sparring partner was none other than undefeated cruiserweight "JC Superstar" Juan Carlos Robles (9-0). They went 12 rounds last night! All the talking is over, I'll just say that George Rivera is ready and he's in the best shape of his life! Get your tickets now for what should be a tremendous, tremendous fight! Han, we'll see you soon and I wish you nothing but success with your show on August 25th at Lee Gymnasium.

Anonymous said...

Joe, if nothing else, Robles is definitely a tough mofo-I read about what he did to his finger; when's the video gonna be up?

Anonymous said...

ACW - We've put the video on hold. Juan will be fighting October 6th in Northern VA. I'll keep you posted for details.

Anonymous said...

Joe-ok. Oct. 6, huh? Cool.

I'll see you Saturday.

Anonymous said...

Thank you Joe and ACW, I will see you at the fight.
