Thompson Garners Spot in Washington Times Power Rankings!

In the category of "some mainstream press is better than no mainstream press at all," comes this item in the Washington Times:

DC heavyweight and WBO number one contender Tony "The Tiger" Thompson captured a spot in the Washington Times Area Power Rankings in today's editions.

Because of his big win over Luan Krasniqi last Saturday night, Thompson was placed in the number three position behind recently resigned Wizards forward DeShawn Stevenson and Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell. Thompson placed ahead of New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels who is one of Times writer Ryan O'Halloran's choices to replace Redskins Head Coach Joe Gibbs should he retire. In fifth place was Washington Nationals General Manager Jim Bowden, who must decide his moves as the baseball trading deadline draws closer.

Thompson's win also allowed him to crack the most recent (July 16) Ring Magazine ratings at number 10. Thompson is the third Beltway Boxer to find a place in the ratings for "The Bible of Boxing." Darnell Wilson recently moved up to number 9 at cruiserweight while Anthony Peterson is at number 10 at lightweight.

  1. Um, Digital, cool about Thompson, but, uh, DeShawn's a guard, not a forward.

Maybe you should stick to boxing ;) LOL

  2. Here's what should be worked on: Two championship fights at the Verizon Center, with The Ding-A-Ling Man and Tony Thompson both challenging for world titles. Put the Peterson brothers on the undercard and then round the thing out with three choice 4-6 rounders with rising stars that sell tickets. Priced right, I believe you'd have a sellout. A major event. Who has the vision and energy to make this happen? -- J.S.

  3. J.S. I like that idea. I'd also have Jimmy Lange on the undercard (for his drawing power, if nothing else).

  4. That sounds great! Okay, this is probably naive, but why can't some game/able Beltway (i.e., DC/MD/VA) promoters/matchmakers work together as a unified TEAM and make it happen.

  5. I like the Jimmy Lange idea too.

    Ding-A-Ling vs. world champion
    Thompson for heavyweight championship
    Peterson brothers in 10-rounders
    Jimmy Lange 10-rounder
    Two four rounders.

This show actually shouldn't be that hard to make -- Duva Boxing and I guess Dan Goossen and Nate Peake could make it happen. It certainly would be the biggest area show in ages and one of the best U.S. fight cards of the year -- J.S.

  6. J.S. Shoot, I'd go to that show. Lange's drawing power, plus the other guys, should make for a near-sellout? Maybe have Too-Sharp in one of the 4-rounders?

  7. Digital, what do you think? Think this could happen? And if we fans on a messageboard can think of this, why not the promoters??

  8. The promoters have more ego than we do. I think it's a great idea, but can we get the people with money together to put it on?

  9. Digital-Maybe you could talk to the promoters and float the idea, see what they think? Hell, worse that happens, we're where we are now.

  10. Jimmy Lange takes no back seat to DC, MD fighter.

Make money for other people. Are you kidding.

Sorry, your two local guys don't have much drawing power.

  11. I don't think the idea is to have anyone take a "back seat" as such. The scenario is to have Thompson and Wilson fighting for world titles. You may want to have Anthony Peterson fighting for a world title as well since he is number one in the WBO.

If, for example, Lange wants to put up his WBC Continental Americas Title, he definitely wouldn't take a back seat because it would be the fourth title fight on the card.

Regardless of how many rounds Lange fights, his fans would be there. If I know Lange, he would LOVE to be a part of a card like this regardless of who's promoting it. And quite frankly, he SHOULD BE a part of a card like this.

  12. The card would sell out with out JL. JL can keep doing those GEICO commericals....tt,ap,lp, and dw can sell out the verizon centers alone....its so easy a caveman could do it
