Fightnews.com is reporting that former welterweight contender Luther "Sugarman" Smith of DC is returning to the ring on Saturday, July 28 when he takes on rising contender David Estrada at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach, FL.
Smith (22-4-2, 12 KO's) has fought only once since scoring the biggest victory of his career -- a second-round TKO over perennial welterweight contender Oba Carr on February 10, 2002 in Elgin, IL. That one bout was a first-round knockout loss to Delvin Rodriguez on August 5, 2005.
Estrada (20-3, 11 KO's) is ranked 13th in the world by the IBF. The resident of Miami, FL is coming off a fourth-round TKO over David Toribio on April 13 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.
You can beat this guy Suge. Remember to box. Prayers,

Mike Sawyer, you are a bum !
ReplyDeletethis is a tough first bout back
ReplyDeleteI saw on another site where someone is calling you out "Money" Mike. What do you have to say?
ReplyDeletethere should be a rule in here that if call someone a bum you have to say your name. i can't think of anything more pathetic and spineless than calling someone a bum behind an anonymous name on a message board. seriously, how do you live with yourself? you are should be embarassed.
ReplyDeleteI am a frequent reader of this blog but very rarely post anymore. However, a fighter that I promote - George "War Time" Rivera woud like to fight 3 local fighters who are at or near his weight class. We have posted it on our website MajorLeagueBoxing.com (and this is what the previous post was alluding to) since last week so I hope Gary doesn't mind that I say something here. I think any of these fights would be good for the area and I would be happy to promote them. Rivera would like to fight: Mike Sawyer, Mike Carrigan, and Perry Ballard. Sawyer has indicated to me that his boxing career is over so that fight appears highly unlikely. That's a shame because I know that would be a highly explosive and entertaining fight which, if it were made, would be highly anticipated by the boxing fans of the area. I think a Carrigan and Ballard matchup would also be highly anticipated. Finally, I would like to say that the previous poster was right about people posting anonymously. Say whatever you want, but put your name behind it, don't be a coward!
ReplyDeleteI would like to see a fight between Rivera and Jones
ReplyDeleteYou mean Lawrence Jones right? Sounds like a good fight but it's one we would have to build up. Right now George Rivera is a huge draw with his fan base, "La Familia". Sawyer is also known for packing them in. I think it would be a great fight with both guys having an equal chance to win. It would also be a big draw for the promotion. But, like I said, Mike is probably through and we have to respect that. If you change your mind Mike, give me a call.
ReplyDeleteHensley now there is a bum!
ReplyDeleteSee, just like HIDING BEHIND A MESSAGE BOARD said in an earlier post on this thread:

And that's why I really don't post very much on the blog anymore, although I am still an avid reader of it. You can call me a bum if you want to, but I am someone who respects the sport of boxing and respects all boxers. I also think I have a good record of promoting competitive and successful boxing shows. I have also never posted anything on this blog without signing my name to it, unlike you anonymous posters out there. But that's okay, whatever floats your boat. When you put your name to something, like Mike Sawyer did earlier and I did after that, I guess it opens you up to fair game and criticism. At least you know our names and even if you put your name to the post, we would probably say "Who is that?" -- so in essence, I guess you are truly anonymous. You can hate if you want to, as long as you buy a ticket you're always welcome!
Hey Joe, that boy george Rivera seems like a good prospect. But we will never know unless he fights someone in similar caliber. Thats when real prospects step up and fight the next level guys. I truly think he and Lawrence Jones would make a good competitive fight. I would like to make that fight with you at this moment. I am Lawrence's manager, lets do it. The fight is gonna be at Lee high school on August 25th. Lets do this !! Give me a call or post your comment here at BATB.
ReplyDeleteHan Kim-
Han,
ReplyDeleteAs a promoter, you know that fights have to be built and fighters have to have followings. George Rivera has a huge following, Mike Sawyer is a big ticket seller. I don't think Lawrence Jones has that same type of following. Maybe I'm wrong about this, I don't know. When you put prospects like Rivera and Sawyer together, both guys should be able to make some money, and it should be a money maker for the promotion. Now then, if we put Rivera and Jones together, you would have one prospect knocking off the other with a minimal purse on the line. Business wise, it probably wouldn't make sense to make that fight, but I could be wrong. Nice meeting you at Scott Farmer's show and I hope that your show is a huge success. If I am able to, I will be there. Who else is going to be fighting on the show?
Joe,
ReplyDeleteLawrence Jones do have big fan base. Even bigger than Mike Sawyer. And thats the fact. But I think you are right, lets leave that fight for later time. See you at the fight.
Han-
Han,
ReplyDeleteIf Lawrence Jones has a big following, maybe we can make the fight on your show. George Rivera has a big following and given the proper time, he can sell a lot of tickets and people will travel to see him in Northern Va. It's probably a risky fight for both guys, but if the price is right, we may be able to make it work. Give me a call. Maybe we can make it a 6 round fight. You've got my number.
Joe you always back down from making a good fight. Why don't you an Han Man fight for VA promoter title? I got Han in two!
ReplyDeleteJack Winston
Fairfax, VA
Hey Jack,
ReplyDeleteI would say with Han's experience he would have the edge on me, but I've got the size, age, and reach advantages!
hey Joe,
ReplyDeleteThe age is just the number and your body reacts to how well you took care of your self. Didnt you see the Hopkins fight ? hahaha. And the size and the reach disadvantage never discouraged me.
You ask the guys from DC and MD boxing gym how well I fought in those days regardless of the size. And ask Eric Bottjer(former Don King's matchmaker and now works with DRL promotion co) how I beat up #1 light heavyweight contender in his own country( Brazil) before they fouled me to death with low blows and I was only 147lbs at that time.
Well anyway, I am not trying to fight with you but dont take me lightly because of my age. hahaha
By the way Jones will take the fight against Rivera. I called you earlier but you didnt pick up. Call me and lets make it happen.
Han Kim-
Hello Han,
ReplyDeleteI'll be in touch with you soon and I was just messing with you on the fight. Take it easy.
Joking about a fight between you and me that is. Not about a fight between Jones and Rivera. Maybe we can make that for your August 25th show. I'll be in touch.
ReplyDeleteIn the co-feature, junior middleweight David Estrada (21-3, 11 KOs) dropped Luther Smith (22-5, 12 KOs) in round three and got a referee's stoppage at 1:25 of round four.
ReplyDeleteBig Suprise!! NOT!!!
