Locals Tested in the Ballroom!

For the second straight night, Beltway Boxers were tested severely during the Ballroom Boxing card at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.

In the main event, Bowie, MD super middleweight Demetrius Davis lost a tough six-round split decision to Philadelphia, PA's Omar "Pitbull" Pittman. The bout came down to the sixth round where Pittman dropped Davis with a right hand about a minute into the round. Pittman managed to hang on and get the decision.
Judges Gary Camponeschi and John Gradowski scored the bout 57-56 for Pittman while Don Risher scored the bout 57-56 for Davis.

Davis, fighting for the first time in almost nine years, falls to 17-12-4, seven KO's while Pittman is now unbeaten in six bouts and is now 14-3-1, eight KO's.

In the co-feature, Upper Marlboro heavyweight "Big" Phill Brown lost for the first time in his pro career, dropping a six-round majority decision to "Lightning" Mike Sheppard of Palestine, WVA. Sheppard overcame a 73-pound weight disadvantage to win the bout. Brown is now 6-1, three KO's while Sheppard is 8-7-1, five KO's.

The performance of the night went to Bel Air, MD middleweight Nick "Flash" Collins, who landed a perfect right hand with two seconds remaining in the second round to knock out Terrell Nixon of Cincinnati, OH. With the win -- Collins's second straight this month -- Collins raised his record to 4-2, four KO's while Nixon falls to 1-1.

Here, Collins talks about his victory.

Gary that made my day to hear that you let Little Brady talk with you and Jerome about the fights. I must warn you ahead of time, he might be trying to steal yor job.
Everyone at the gym will be messing with him today. In fact, he should have been training yesterdat instead of messing around with you guys all night.
The kid has a big fight coming up in Las Vegas. (Jr. Golden Gloves}
Again, thanks for everything and keep up the good work.

Money mike when you fight again. That was a great show some great fights. Big Phill Need a trainer. He dont respect flip johnson. And who are those guys in the corner never seen them around boxing. Its ok a lot of great fighters lost early and became world champions

CHRIS DOES IT AGAIN. WHEN WILL THE LOCAL BOXERS LEARN NOT TO FIGHT ON ANY CARD THAT HE IS MATCHMAKING.

Anonymous said...

for "CHRIS DOES IT AGAIN" comment... This is the typical Maryland/DC fighter mentality, when you lose a fight you blame the matchmaker. Maybe you should be thanking Chris instead of admonishing him since its now apparent Phil Brown isn't able to beat a .500 fighter in his own hometown.
All fighters lose at some point. Some make it to 5-0, some make it to 25-0, but eventually you will lose. Even Floyd will at some point. Maybe since Phil lost at this point in his career, it will force him to work on his deficiencies and become a better fighter because of it. Chris deserves credit for matching these hometown guys with though fights, that is the only way they will get better.

I agree its a problem when they get beat. But its not a problem when they win> Chris is just doing his job making good fights. If the show would have been some bullshit your would have had something to say about that. I can say one thing fighters would come here to fight because you get nohometown wins. Chris keep up the good work

D Davis keep up the good work. It was your first fightin 9 years its ok.

Anonymous said...

THAT IS FUNNY.CHRIS DOES A GREAT JOB AT GETTIING (LOCAL) FIGHTERS BEAT EVERY CARD. DAVIS HAS NOT FOUGHT IN 9 YEARS, MAYBE YOU COULD HAVE GOT HIM A 500% FIGHTER.LOL AND PHIL BROWN HAS 6 PRO FIGHTS LOOK AT EVERY UP IN COMING HEAVYWEIGHTS RECORD AND LOOK HOW MANY 0-1 FIGHTERS THEY FIGHT COMING UP THE RANKS. BALLROOM SUCKS BECAUSE THERE ARE NO HOMETOWN GUYS TO CHEER FOR BECAUSE THEY ALL GET BEAT.

Do not blame Phil Browns loss on Flip Johnson. That comment was as stupid as it gets. Flip is not the one in the ring. It is not his fault that Phil did not listen.
Actually, Flip is a very good trainer and he has been there before himself.

My question is:

What do you all want? Would you rather have the Beltway Boxers get easy bouts so when they move up in competition, they lose and then you say "he couldn't move up."

Or do you want our boxers to be tested and if they survive, we'll have a better idea on how far they'll go.

As Brady aptly put it, Brown (and Davis for that matter) will get back in the gym, work on his mistakes and move forward.

By the way, OSB, it was my pleasure having Brady on the show. I have had some great talks with him over the past year or so and the young man is a sponge when it comes to this sport.

yo Chris, these young fighters cant afford to lose at home. This is where they gain experience and confidence. This where they can build their dreams of being a champion. You have been around this game a long time , and you probably know who is gonna win before the first bell rings. Because you're an expert matchmaker. Don't do these things to our local fighters man.
Gary, you dont test your fighters at home. not front of your people. All kinds of things go thru their heads and too many distractions before the fight. I know! I was a fighter and now I am a promoter. I am not as an expert as Chris but I do the right things for my home town boys. My home town boys dont normally lose at my show and they will have big chance, big payday some where else. You know some good ones comes thru and became champion, like Keith Holmes and Lamont Person. Lets protect home town guys and build boxing here at home.

Hey congrats to Nick Collins but I heard a rumor on the street that he (his team) verbally agreed to fight Reuel Williams in Delaware in mid June. Williams has fought along the beltway recently and looks pretty good. that would've been interesting. The bout was to be at 168 and Collins' camp was adamant that it be 168 without the customary +/- a pound. Now I hear they backed out of the fight and started talking stuff like we will knock out Williams in Baltimore, we are not going to Delaware. Making excuses basically. Williams is a kid who went to Baltimore to fight two locals, Henry Mayes and Nick Caroleo and looked sharp against them so he is not afraid to go into anyones backyard apparently. From what I hear Collins' team officially agreed and then got cold feet. Just wondering if anyone could add to this. It's ashame it would have been a decent matchup, Williams woulda probably knocked Collins out early but still intriguing. I mean Collins was stopped by Mayes and was knocked down again the other night. I don't blame Collins' team for being scared to fight the guy based on his recent beltway showings but I would have liked to see it.

Collins is fighting at 160, not at 168.
I made most of Lamont Pearson's fights and he was tested all the way. He learned from each guy and got better each fight. That is what developing as a fighter is all about.

Anonymous said...

Chris, come to think of it, you are right. Lamont was tested, almost everytime he fought. yes, that is the reason he got better so quickly as a pro. But maybe too many hard fights in a row. Now come to think of it I dont think he had an easy fight except first 2 with me.

Anonymous said...

I'm not blaming Phill lost on Flip. He don't listen to flip or respect him. Let's put the blame on Chris M blame it on your manager who oked the fight. Lamont never had a easy fight. Come on who said boxing was easy once again blame it on the people who oked the fight that's who its on. Lamont is a cry baby and he gave up in his last couple of fights blame that on Chris to.keith Holmes-Sharmba -Joppy- toosharp- erick Aiken even ChopChop all were world champions blame that on Chris to your people around the beltway don't have nothing good to say about anyone.once again get somebody around you that boxing AND I'm OUT

As a fan, just a fan, I want to see well matched cards like Chris puts on. The shows Jake throws together aren't competitive. Put together competitive cards, the fans will come, the purses will grow, and boxing will regain its deserved stature in sports. Jake's cards, a step above WWF, results never in doubt.

As for Holmes, guy fought 2 undefeated fighters in his first eight fights, losing one bout. Also beat a 10-1 kid from Pittsburgh in a close bout in Bmore. Don't forget Holyfield, who fought Qawi 11 fights in, Spinks-ALi in 8 fights. Gaze at Leonard's career, he fought a bunch of tough trial horses coming up. Got to be in tough to develop.

Seems to me, just a fan, how tough you put a fighter in depends on factors like how extensive and good an amateur career, their age, their physical and mental maturity, training habits, focus, natural ability, and chin.

As for Brown, he fought a guy who has never shown anything, was 73 pounds lighter, and hasn't beaten a fighter with a win in 7 years. Certainly looks like a win for an aspiring prospect. Seems like this fight says more about Brown's future as a fighter (turns 30 soon) than Chris's ability as a matchmaker. Keep em coming Chris, I'll keep buying.

Thank you Southpaw. The future of boxing comes down to one very simple equation: a fan buys a ticket for a fight card and wants to see a fight that is worth what he paid. You can extend that equation to the whole sport. If the product is not good, people will stop buying, in person and on television or in the future over the internet. For boxing to be the great sport that it is, promoters must put on quality fights and that means fights that are worth watching. If they do not, then the fan will get bored and go away.

Pearson became a great fighter because he grew with each fight. When you consider for his whole career he held down a full time job working for the post office, never went to training camp for six-eight weeks the way elite fighters do and still became one of the best fighters in the world, you realize what a talent he was. But Lamont made choices about sticking to his career and protecting his livelihood that were detrimental to his attempt to become world champion. That was his choice and his choice alone. He had great management that was always there to support him in any way including subsidizing many of his fights so that the promoter could bring in just the right opponent or promoting a show that lost money just to showcase Pearson when he needed a win or needed to move in the rankings. But the real decisions in Lamont's career were always his.

Great story Chris but talk about all the fighters you ripped off, made sure they got beat or bad mouthed so they could not get work. Or talk about the fighter who punched you out in his dressing room up at the Ballroom where you had to run for your life when he found out you took money from his purse that you were not entitled to.

Jeff

Oh please, give me the name of the fighter who "punched me out", give me the name of the fighter that i robbed at the Ballroom. I get paid by Ballroom Boxing not by any one else. Period. In the State of Maryland you get what you sign on the Maryland bout agreement, if you do not you go to Pat and then it is resolved. Ask the commission if what you claim has ever happened. Such petty bullshit lies, it really takes away from all the positives that come out because of this site. So get a life.

HOW ABOUT JUST GETTING IN SHAPE, AND STOP BLAMING CHRIS FOR U BEING OUT OF SHAPE, NOT TRAINING, NOT EATING RIGHT, MOST OF U BLAMING NEVER HAD A DAMN FIGHT, DONT BLAME FLIP FOR BROWN'S LOST, BLAME HIM FOR HIS NOT TRAINING!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wasn't at the Ballroom show, sad to say because that's supposed to be my home base, but I will say that the badmouthing of Chris Middendorf - save for the good-natured ribbing - on this site ought to stop. I'm not defending or accusing, I'm just saying that whoever is out there making the charges should step forward and give their name, or, at the very least name names in terms of who has been ripped off or tried to punch out Chris or whatever. Until then, it's just a frustrated smear campaign by someone who clearly has got a beef. The best way to clear the air is bring the facts out into the open for examination. The constant sniping from the shadows undermines your case, Chris' integrity and the quality of this great Web site.
As for matching tough, now that is something open to question and serious debate in here. There's a promoter out there (I know who he is) who says not to match the home guys tough. Sometimes that's a good idea and sometimes not. You MUST make competitive fights to make the fans want to keep coming back. But it's also not out of line to give the home guy a fight he can win once in a while if it's part of a logical progression in his career. I believe it's ok to match home guys in fights they know they will win, providing those bouts are learning tools: for example, facing a southpaw for the first time, a tricky, surviving mover, a limited, but heavy puncher; these are "types" of fighters that help build skills. Knocking over Otto De Morgue, who has been shipped in on an out-of-town meat wagon, fresh from an Ohio soup kitchen doesn't do anybody any good. Heroes and villans shows stink. The Ballroom Boxing series was FOUNDED on the philosophy of even matches. I was there at the beginning, and Scott and Josh Hall and later Chris did not deviate from the plan. Except for a couple painful lessons learned, Scott Wagner didn't try to sign up fighters because he knew he then would be obligated to get them wins. That goes right against the grain of what the whole series is about -- putting on evenly matched fights for fans and hoping fireworks erupt. A lot of people in the boxing community may not like it, but Scott and Chris make fights for fans that AREN'T in the boxing community, but just love to come out to see boxing. That, to me, is purity, and while there have been occasional deviations from the program, for the most part it has been about as good as it gets on the club level. -- John Scheinman

I think this guy who accuses Chris and may have some info needs to sit down with Gary and Chris to put it on the table. I do hear that Chris has messed over many fighters but I also hear he has done a lot of good. So who knows what is what till it is all out. Gary how about you putting it out there for the folks bad mouthing him to meet you guys in a comfortable place to get this out and done with?

Gary "Digital" Williams -- blogster, peace maker. Awesome. The man can do everything.

Nobody blammed Flip. We are just saying he don't listen to flip. A guy who has been around boxing all of his life. Phill is lazy and he don't train. Blame those wins he got on Chris.
