As we know, the amateur scene along the Beltway is really heating up. One of the newest discoveries along the amateur scene is super heavyweight Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell, who has been training at Old School Boxing gym.
The 24-year-old, 6-2, 250 pound graduate of Gwynn Park High School in Brandywine, MD and Michigan State University is currently 4-0, four KO's. He was an all-everything middle linebacker until he suffered a knee injury.
Tonight, Mitchell will be a guest on "Sports Talk" with Glenn Harris at 8 pm ET on News Channel 8.
By the way, a lot of credit should be given to Glenn Harris -- one of my mentors in the sports journalism field -- for his continued support of the Beltway Boxing community.
What a damn joke! I just watched the interveiw with this Seth Mitchell guy. He said he is eyeing the 2008 olympics and 45 seconds later he said he is turning pro in January. First of all, all tournaments are done concerning getting into the olymipics. Everyone one is laughing their asses off at these two guys. Seth has only had 3 fights and two of them went the distance-I was there.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, amatures do not have managers. He mentioned that he knocking down pros in the gym. Well, amatures are not allowed to spar with pros. These guy made comeplete asses of themselves.
If USA boxing gets ahold of this talk about managers and sparring pros. He will never fight amature again anyway. It would not surprise me one bit if Round 1 is not closed up by the end of the week after saying that shit on air.
Round One has had enough troubles in the past, now you got two knuckle-heads on live TV saying how they do illegal sparring with pros and the amature having a manager. I was waiting to see if he admitted being on a salary. Remember amatures are not permitted to get paid either.
I still cannot believe someone would admit that on live TV.
Remember you heard it here first:
ROUND ONE WILL BE CLOSED DOWN BECAUSE OF THIS STUPITY BY THESE TWO CLOWNS>
My cell phone was ringing off the hook. Everyone one in Dc is dying laughing. Manager for a novice overweight heavyweight with 4 fights. HA HA HA...LMFAO
ReplyDeleteSparring pros and knocking them all out. what a crock of shit!
Looks like Round One is in trouble again
ReplyDeleteGary you are doing a terrific job. I love reading this jive. Who are these two fellows on TV tinight making a fool out of themselves?
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't someone warn them before they put their foot in their mouth? USA boxing is going to be going crazy when they find out. I doubt Round 1 will get closed up, but I bet this guy Seth never boxes am,ature again. He better get back to Morgan and play football.
2 Fools
ReplyDeletePoor Rd. 1-they need help.
ReplyDeleteActually, you guys got it wrong about where he trains, I think he trains at Old School Boxing in Waldorf Maryland. Therefore, Old School is in trouble-not Rd.1.
ReplyDeleteThat is the same guy who ruined Corrie Sanders
ReplyDeleteCorrie is now blind in one eye and can hardly see out of the other.
ReplyDeleteHe says he is boxing in Baltimore on June 22nd. Not now he ain't.
ReplyDeleteHe has screwed that up big-time.
Amatures can spar Pro's, and they do alot. Usually they will spar the later rounds, when the Pro is just trying to get in rounds. I spar with amatures somtimes just to get in the rounds, or after I have done 6-8 rounds with my pro sparring partners. It is not illegal.
ReplyDeleteNow about having a manager, as long as money is not involved it should be good to go. Although I find it just as amusing as you guys, a amature with obly 4 fights already haveing a manager, lol, and talking about turning pro or olympics, wow.
Gary I will see you on the 22nd, brother.
Boul
Read your USA boxing book. amatures cannot have managers and they cannot spar pros. However, I just spoke to someone and the guy Seth Mitchell lied, he has never sparred a pro at all. He was just pumping himself up-ok. Trust me, he has never spar a pro. Seth Micthell will tell you or anyone else-he has never did such a thing.
ReplyDeleteI have been told that the pros Mitchell has been sparring against have been retired pros.
ReplyDeleteThe arrangement between Seth and Sharif is not a financial one. Right now, Sharif is more of an advisor than a manager in the strictest sense of the word.
OK Gary let's look at this honestly. The advisor/manager has drawn more negative attention to his boxer than he expected. Mr. Sharif apparently knows nothing about amateur boxing otherwise he would have NEVER allowed his boxer to admit to having a manager instead of an advisor nor admitted on national television to sparring pros. He may have cancelled his boxer's own membership with USA Boxing. This gives the appearance in the amateur world there is something illegal going on at either Old School or Round One and both facilities may be completely innocent. This is where insurance comes to play. They say it's not illegal to spar amateurs with pros but what if the amateur gets hurt. The insurance will not cover the injury bottom line. This self motivation is killing amateur boxing on the grassroots level. The local boxing gyms have to pay increased insurance coverage because of situations like this all over the country. Don't get me wrong, I've witness this kid knock out a few people but it just shows he has more athleticism than your average new comer. His 2008 chances are out of the window. The US Championships start this weekend and qualification ended last week. The Olympic Trials are in August and in order to be INVITED you will have to make the quarterfinals of the US Championships. Again, the advisor has advised incorrectly. What's the point of the advisor/manager being visible? Isn't this a behind the scene position, especially with an amateur. This kid may have to work extra hard now because of bad publicity. Gary, has Mr. Sharif had any other boxers other than Corrie Sanders?? I've heard Sharif is related to someone in boxing along the beltway but can't remember who now.
ReplyDelete- VaBoxing
Sharif Davis is his name and I think he is Adrian Davis brother,so I am quite sure he is from Rd 1. not Old School.
ReplyDeleteEither way, he has no clue to what the rules are, but you cannot knock a guy for trying. Remember Seth Mitchell is a former football player, he too knows nothing about boxing. I am sure Adrian Davis is the behind the scenes guy on all of this.
I have been to Old School before and that crew is off the hook.
ReplyDeleteMost of those guys have just got out or they are on work release now. The majority of them are on probation or parole. The police are up there atleast 3 times aweek on calls for fighting in the parking lot, doing burnouts with cars and motorcycles. I hope drugs are not involved. You could not pay me to go up there ever again, especially when the sun goes down.
I am surprised that the state has not closed them down long ago.
Thats bullshit, its not that bad up there. All boxing gyms have their share of problems. They are doing something right, for they have some of the best boxers around. I see they are always in the paper or on a sports channel. You are just jealous. Get a life and join Golds gym.
ReplyDeleteThose guys won the Golden Gloves team trophy three years in a row.
ReplyDeleteThey must be doing something right.
My only comment is that amateurs spar with pros all the time. In fact, top amateurs compete at a much higher level than lower echelon pros. Fact: They talk about it on Fightnews, HBO Boxing, ESPN, etc. there is nothing illegal about that.
ReplyDeleteNo comment on the inteview.
Bo
Chris Middendorf ruined that gym for sure.
ReplyDeleteLook, Chris has done a lot of things like rip fighters off, change contracts and lie, but he did not RUIN THAT GYM!!!! So stop saying that.
ReplyDeleteI honestly believe that Coach whatever is jealous. Seth does not have a manager, but an advisor. He does spar retired pros AND NONE of his fights went the distance...2 K.O. AND 2 T.K.O's.....NEVER a decision. So for you to lie means either you are a natural hater or he KNOCKED YOUR GUY OUT. And best believe, he is worthy of the olympics....ive seen the guy, no one can touch him. He just needs to watch what he says
ReplyDeleteI was almost speechless at some of these comments. Then I remembered that people who can't do... talk shit. It is now November and Mayhem Is turning pro in Januaury. His record is like 8 and 1, and that 1 was a close round bout that went to decision. If any of his statements were inaccurate, so fucking what? Coach your confused because I was there at all of his fights and only one went the distance; the one that went to decision. I suggest you decide: Do you want to keep quiet and watch his career take off like a good hater or do you want to be loud and wrong over the web? Either way Mayhem is going to do what he was born to do... Suceed!
ReplyDeletegolden boy signed seth mitchell....shelly finkel managed seth mitchell???? THAT ONE??? is that the guy you were laughing at....i believe all of you who doubted him should feel stupid
ReplyDeleteCoach Grant- next time you place a bet, you know who to bet on. Have you been watching the olympics? Me neither. Too busy watching "that Seth Mitchell guy" make fools out of you and everyone else who had something negative to say. Guess the jokes on you. He might not have known exactly what to say back in 2007, but he's clearly a fast learner-in more ways than one. I dont know what you're coaching, but spotting talent clearly isn't your forte.
ReplyDeleteI REALLY FUCKED UP I wasnt myself when I Fought seth mithcell on may29 of 08 well I will learn from my mistakes if anybody wants to know I GO BY THE NAME Alexis THE MANIAC Medina I will sharpen my skills
ReplyDeleteI find it rather amusing how all of you haters had the nerve to bad mouth my cousin originally but now that he has signed with the golden boy, has respectable managers and turned pro only to produce an outstanding record there appears to be silence. And whoever this guy "Coach Grant" is you are truly a clown. nearly everything you said was either misinformed or just provenly wrong. Stick to your day job and I pray for your sake that it's not coaching!!
