Diego Corrales: 1977-2007!

The boxing world has been shocked to learn of the passing of former world champion Diego "Chico" Corrales. Corrales died in a three-vehicle accident last night in Las Vegas. Corrales was driving a motorcycle when it struck the back of a car. He was just 29 years old.

One of the best descriptions of Corrales's life in and out of the ring will come from his promoter, Gary Shaw, who said "Diego Corrales lived an X Games lifestyle."

Corrales's epic bout against Jose Luis Castillo exactly two years and one day ago (May 7, 2005) in Las Vegas is just one example of that extreme lifestyle in the ring. Corrales was knocked down twice in the 10th round before coming back in the very same round to stop Castillo.

Damian Fuller, who will face Dean White this Saturday at the George Mason University Patriot Center, can tell you how tough Corrales was. Fuller was brutally stopped in the third round in June of 2003.

Corrales had a career of 40-5, 33 KO's with his only losses coming to Floyd Mayweather, Joel Casamayor (twice) Castillo (in the rematch) and Joshua Clottey in his last bout on April 7.

Corrales was the father of five children. He also leaves behind his wife, Michelle, who was seven months pregnant. He will truly be missed.

I remember when our local fighters use to ride. Andrew Council fell on one. Sharmba had one I remember when Ham an Toosharp got into a full beef about that. To our fighters around the beltway please get of the bikes. Let's keep his family in Prayer. If you would look up the word warrior in dictionary you would see Deigo picture.

I hope boxer know that football and basketball players. Have in there contracts that they can't ride motorcycles. Because if they get hurt the team don't have to pay them. I agree he had a big heart and that's one fighter that gave it his all every fight.

You have to take it on faith the drivers in cars around you are being careful when you are on a cycle. It sounds like it wasn't the bike that brought Diego down, but his reckless driving. I ride a 150 scooter all over d.c., and I am extremely careful and watchful of what goes on around me. One little bump . . . -- J.S.
