'Touch of Sleep' Williamson Wants 'Hometown Throwdown' with Thompson!

Although he's been living in Denver, CO for awhile, heavyweight DaVarryl "Touch of Sleep" Williamson still considers himself a DC boxer. Williamson has not fought since May of last year when he scored a fourth-round TKO over Mike Mollo in Worcester, MA.

Recently, Williamson told Fightbeat.com's Kyle Waterstone that the reason he hasn't fought more is because no one wants to fight him. Williamson also told Waterstone that he would like to take on another Beltway Boxer who seems to have the same problem -- Tony "The Tiger" Thompson.

"He’s been on a roll. He beat Guinn, then one of those Ibragimov’s, and he’s talking about trying to get a meaningful fight. Well I’m right here baby. Let’s get it on. Couple of D.C. area boys putting it on the line sounds good to me. I’m ranked by the WBA & IBF, so maybe Dan Goosen & Don King can make it work as an eliminator or something. I'll fight any of those guys, they have the ranking and as far as I know, none of them have an immediate dance partner, but Tony looks most attractive at the moment, because he has been on a roll and is the flavor of the month, plus we can do this in DC and make it a real “Hometown Throwdown". Lets do this!"

Let me paraphrase the one and only "Discombobulating" Jones as I ask you this question:

"Beltway Boxing Fans: Are YOU ready to do this?" What is YOUR opinion on a Thompson-Williamson "Hometown Throwdown?"

Cassandra White seems interested in putting this fight together.

"touch of sleep" is a shot fighter who still possess power in that right hand. too much risk and very little reward for thompson. it sounds good from a fan standpoint, but not a good business move. williamson isn't ranked in anybody's top 50. :)

I thanks its good you have some calling Tony out. That's what's boxing is about out with the old and in with the new or in with the old.and out with the new. If people paid to see Wilson an McCall.I think this a great show to bring to DC. Who are your to say someones shot

Slickwalt:

The WBA has Williamson #7, and the IBF has him #8.

From a business standpoint, its a great fight for Thompson, a win moves him into the Top 10 arena.

boxing rankings are all polictical. anybody who "knows" the business knows that. it's not how u are ranked but who u are affiliated with.. i have seen williamson in the gym and heard him talk.. he is a shot fighter, period.. ihave been in and around boxing for 25 years, i am not a fan...

Which gym might that be? You've been to Denver lately?

DaVarryl hasn't been back to DC in years....

Two of the governing bodies have Thompson ranked in the top 10. Thompson is ranked fifth by the WBO and seventh by the WBC. The IBF also ranks Thompson 12th.

this will be a very interesting fight
i think one of the area promoters need to step forward and put this fight together

Great regional fight...problem is, will HBO or SHOWTIME be interested? I doubt it, but if the money was right, ESPN or FOX would jump all over it.

Gary
can you get a response
from thompson about this possible fight

i think espn will pick this fight up. If I was Nate and Tony i would try to make this fight happen as soon as possible
Tony needs to stay active why he waits on the champions to stop ducking him

I will try to get a comment from Tony on this possible bout.

Rumor mill says DaVarryl Williamson - Sergei Liakhovich may happen this spring in a WBA eliminator. (Liakhovich #4, Williamson #5)

Williamson will return to DC and put it all on the line. The billing is..

TWO MEN ENTER.. ONE MAN LEAVES.

ESPN should take it and any top fighter who agrees with Williamson being shot should lap it up as a chance to break into the top 5 and be a contender for a title shot.

Okay.. Williamson is shot huh? Too old huh? Well, then why are people ducking him? Slickwalt is right... power in the right hand.. risk.. So... is boxing now reduced to taking fights with no risk?

Gee.

Williamson has his back in the corner and that makes him dangerous. If boxing is no longer valid from the fan standpoint, then I don't want to bother with it at all.

With all of the hype about De La Hoya -vs- Meriweather.. c'mon. THAT was ONLY a good business move cause the outcome was never in doubt because EVERYONE knew Oscar couldn't knock out Meriweather and he sure as hell wasn't going to outbox him.

Face it. Floyd Jr. can't be beat unless there comes another Floyd. And nobody is on the radar.

With UCF taking the share of the power-punch crowd. We need to see some guys who are willing to leave it all out there and to hell with a decision!

DC wants it and needs it.. and should be promoting hometown heroes to climb the rankings and then let the city bid for a title shot.

GO FOR IT!
