Instant Replay: Yea or Nay?

This has become the newest hot button topic in boxing; the use of instant replay. The New Jersey State Boxing Commission is using instant replay to determine a number of situations including knockdowns versus slips, causes of cuts (headbutt vs. punches) and low blows.

As I'm writing this, I'm watching ESPN2's Friday Night Fights where there was a serious instance in which instant replay could have been used. I have not talked to any representatives of the local commissions about this and to tell you the truth, I haven't completely made up my mind on it, but I'm curious to know what you think about instant replay in boxing. Please vote in the new poll.

The results of the last poll:

What bout would you most like to see along the Beltway in 2007?

Anthony Peterson vs. Dorin Spivey (18) 20%

Hasim Rahman vs. Tony Thompson (13) 15%

Emmanuel Nwodo vs. Darnell Wilson (16) 18%

Dean White vs. Dorin Spivey III (3) 3%

Sharmba Mitchell vs. Jimmy Lange (7) 8%

William Joppy vs. Keith Holmes (5) 6%

Thomas Snow vs. Tyrell Samuel (15) 17%

Jimmy Lange vs. Ishmail Arvin (7) 8%

Mark Johnson vs. Dorin Spivey (2) 2%

Other (2) 2%

  1. Absolutely. Why not? Just as long as we don't get too 'nit picky'. By that I mean this; if there is an OBVIOUS error made in the ring (or on the field) just simply review it. People are human and make mistakes. Otherwise, don't take an eternity to review a debatable and extremely close call. That's not what it's for in my opinion.

  2. I voted. btw...about the last poll where the heck is Spivey...I haven't heard a peep since his last fight with Dean...Thought I saw somewhere Sweetpea was training someone else...What's the scoop? Guess I am curious about Dean also...hungry to see these great fighters in action again.

  3. Yes Sweetpea is training Brok the heavyweight. Spive vs Peterson. Anthony will beat him down. Anthony is on another level.

  4. Don't count out Spivey. He is as slick as any boxer out there he just has no power in his punch. Because he has lost some fights when the home town judging went against him I don't find it to be a surprise that he is taking some time off. Anyone that says Spivey will take a beat down does not know much about him. If he took a beat down it would be a first.

  5. they should most definitley use instant replay. Adapt to technology, use it. Sometimes the ref miss things, and who gets cheated..the fighter.....100% yes utilize instant replay.

  6. Agree w/ Bizzy. What happened on Friday Night Fights?

  7. What ever happened to Russ Shiflett? I hear he is in jail in Ohio? Can you follow up Gary and find out what ever happened to the undefeated cruiserweight who used to fight on Jake's cards? Or maybe "The Cruiserweight (bizzy)" has the answer. He seems to be one of the most knowledgeable readers on your site.

  8. For the person that said I am stupid please show me how stupid I am by naming one person that has given Spivey a beat down. I'll be waiting.

Also I see the need for instant replay because you can not catch every thing but I don't really see how you can use it without changing the fight. With 1 minute between fights it would take at least a minute to review. Do you review between rounds which means the judges would have to wait for the review before scoring a round?

  9. Spivey got beat down and knocked out by Juan Lezcano in the 8th round for the NABF title. And it was definitely a beat down. He also took a solid beating from Omar Bernal. Who dominated him and won most of the rounds.

  10. I agree Anthony is on another level. Spivey is ok I would like to see him again. He's funny than his trainer Sweet pea. Hey Joe what's next for Dorin. And is him Dean looking to fight again

  12. Spivey was beat by Juan Lezcano. I aagree it was a TKO but show me where Peterson has fought anyone that was nearly as good as him. In case you don't know a TKO is not a KO. Bernal he fought after a year layoff when he was having management problems. Now tell me Spivey is the first boxer to have a bad fight while going through management problems. Not knocking Peterson who you seem to love but look at the records of the folks he has fought. I think Spivey v Peterson would be a good fight for everyone and it would also be a step up in class for Peterson. So let's see if Peterson takes the fight or plays it safe.

  13. There's talk of Dean White fighting Damian Fuller in May.

  14. Dean good luck. Work hard for all of these suckers around the beltway. Can you believe people are still talking about that bum Spivey. There talking about he never got his ass beat.

  15. Seems to me that Peterson is not the only person that plays it safe around here. LOL Get your boy to step up to the plate and stop playing it safe. Folks want to see the fight but it will never happen because he don't want to risk his perfect record.

  16. man, if i was anthony, i would quit playing it safe, step away from my current path of becoming a mulitmillionare by taking calculated risks that better my career, and blow it on a whim that I should step up to the plate and fight who an anonymous bloggers says I should on this forum...sarcasm

  17. Masterful sarcasm!!! As far as EITHER Peterson vs. Spivey, you guys both make good points. That said, the Petersons are just too good in my opinion. It would be an interesting fight for a round or two but they would pull away. The Petersons are MUCH bigger than Dean White, who muscled Spivey at times.

  18. Reminds me of what everyone said before the Ali v Foreman fight. Foreman was too big and too strong. He was going to kill Ali. Then there was the time that Hearns was going to kill Sugar Ray. You win fights in the ring not on paper. If you are that good then it's a safe bet that whoever is standing in the other corner you will beat. Now we don't know if Peterson can run with the big dogs because he has been playing it safe looking to make all those millions.
