The 2007 Beltway Boxing season will kick off this Friday on ESPN2 as Anthony and Lamont Peterson will start ESPN's Friday Night Fights 2007 schedule from the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Anthony Peterson (21-0, 16 KO's) will be in the main event defending his NABO Lightweight championship against Mexican Lightweight champion Juan Humberto "Ringo" Garza of Cardereyta, MX (28-2, 23 KO's).
A. Peterson, who was named Prospect of the Year by Friday Night Fights's Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas, is currently ranked number four by the WBO and number eight by the WBA. A win on January 5 could lead to a world title shot.
In the co-feature, Lamont Peterson, the WBC US Jr. Welterweight champ (19-0, eight KO's), will fight a non-title eight-round encounter against Juaquin "Killer" Gallardo of San Leandro, CA (17-5-1, six KO's). Peterson is ranked number eight by the WBA.
The first local cards will be held on Saturday, January 27th. Jake Smith's Baltimore Pro Boxing will hold a card at the Pikesville National Guard Armory in Pikesville, MD. Tentatively slated to appear on that show will be Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow and the official pro return of Demetrius Davis.
Also on January 27, Han "Sugar" Kim will hold an amateur show at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.
A number of Beltway Boxing prospects will appear outside the Beltway on Joe Hensley's Rising Stars show on Saturday, February 3 at the Augusta Expoland in Fisherville, VA. Included on that card is the rematch between Juan Carlos Robles and Derek Amos, as well as Andrew "Doo Man" Farmer.
On February 22, former world heavyweight champion Hasim "The Rock" Rahman returns on a nationally televised card from West Virginia.
Thursday, March 8 will be the 2007 debut of Ballroom Boxing at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD. The original date of January 25 was dropped because of a scheduling conflict at Michael's. To make up for the loss of the January show, promoter Scott Wagner will schedule a card in June, which is normally a vacation month.
Saturday, March 10, back at the Pikesville Armory.
That's what I know so far, but there is talk about other promoters doing shows in the first quarter of this year. I'll keep you posted.
Also, I plan to have results of the Year-End Excellence Awards as well as my personal choices in those categories within the next two weeks.

I saw where the "Rock" is fighting Mercer. Can anyone confirm?
I saw that on Boxrec but haven't been able to confirm elsewhere.
How does a night at the Pikesville Armory, or The ABC complex in Springfield compare to a night at Michael's? I am disappointed that the January show has been cancelled and am debating whether to make a trip to one of these other shows.

Third, didn't Joe Hensley say something about a possible Feb. show at the Patriot Center?

I think you can't go wrong regardless of where you go in the area. That is the beauty of this area as far as boxing is concerned.
A lot depends on what you are looking for. Jake's shows have a great following because of the boxers (Mike Paschall, Jessie Nicklow, Tony Cygan, et al) who have been regulars there.
The ABC shows, whether promoted by Scott Farmer or Han Kim, have been very good overall, primarily because Northern VA is trying to get back into the boxing picture. I was impressed by Farmer's first show back in August because a lot of the boxers on that card were new, but they did have solid followings.
The Ballroom shows have prided themselves on showing great bouts, regardless of the boxers involved. Michael's is a little bit more of a classy-looking venue but the crowds are similar. The Ballroom crowds tend to be a little more cynical than the other shows though.

So tell me if I am interpreting this correctly. I'll get quality fights at either venue. But, I am looking for a place to entertain my girl, she likes boxing (we've been to many big fights) so I'd be better off with the Pikesville show? Is that more of a ballroom feal than the ABC complex? Do they even serve drinks at the ABC show?

I thought the next Pikesville show (1/27)was going to have music and dancing after the fights...if so, I would think that would be an ideal place to take your date.

I know Joe talked about a show at the Patriot Center in February. That may still happen but I'm not sure now that the show in Fisherville is early in February.
Anonymous, thanks for the questions on the boxing venues. Tell your girl friend that this isn't Las Vegas or Atlantic City. Most shows we have here have a different atmosphere and the boxers aren't as experienced.
As I get more information and talk more about the shows, maybe that will give you a better idea of what show (or shows) you want to attend.

And, of course we know it isn't AC or Vegas. I've been to ballroom fights before. In fact I went to the Lazcano vs. Tackie fight in a Mandalay ballroom, and have also seen Abner Mares in a ballroom.
I just wanted to see if the fights here were somewhat comparable in terms of atmosphere, not necessarily talent. Basically, whether it was a social atmosphere with drinking and having fun, or was it more like a high school sporting event, which is what I was starting to think the ABC complex provided.
Hopefully that is a little more clear. And again, I appreciate everyones willingness to help out.

Did you go to any of the shows at The Patriot Center in 2006? Particularly the last two, one in October and one in December. I've been to many big shows in AC and even some in Vegas but those shows at the Patriot Center were excellent, world class shows and even though this isn't Vegas or AC, those shows were right up there with them in my opinion. They even have a website that they are posting the fights to but I don't want to step on Gary's toes, so if it's okay with Gary, I'll let him give out the site so you can watch the Patriot Center fights. Truthfully, The ABC Sports Complex sounds like it should be a big time place, but it's a dump. It's in an industrial area and it's just a warehouse, that's all. Martin's West in Woodlawn, MD is a classy place and Jake Smith, who promotes shows there, puts on competitive bouts. Michael's 8th Avenue is also a nice place and there is a great history of boxing there. Pikesville is an Armory, but there's a good vibe there (at least for me). If you're looking to impress a lady with a night of pro boxing, stick to Michael's 8th Avenue, Martin's West, or the Pikesville Armory, or take her to Fairfax, VA for the shows at The Patriot Center.
