Once again, the Washington Post does a nice story on one of our amateur Beltway Boxers. This time it's Luke Runion, the super heavyweight from the University of Maryland, who is ranked number four in the country. Liz Clarke profiles him in the story "His Major is the Sweet Science" which can be found by following this address:

In just this year alone, the Post has done nice stories on Franchon Crews, the Russell Family and Dominic Wade.
He's a good kid but with Kelley and those guys in DC its about money not the kids
ReplyDeletethe heavyweight division in the amateurs has been lacking in recent years. it seems as though big kids are turning towards football and basketball.. it would be nice to see a young promising heavyweight for a change. i don't know anything about this kid, but i will be watching..
ReplyDeleteLuke stopped by Old School the other day. He is a very polite and well spoken. I think this guy can help the amatue association in our area. He is obviosly very smart.

What happened to that female fighter from DC that got starched on a card at the Lincoln Theater I think back in 2003?

I believe you are talking about former IFBA champion Lisa "Too Fierce" Foster. She retired from the sport shortly after the bout you mentioned.
ReplyDeleteShe did own Too Fierce Boxing and Fitness Gym in Northeast DC off of Colorado Avenue. I think she still has the gym, but I haven't talked to her in a while.
Entirely agreed, Slickwalt. I am currently writing an article that is (in a roundabout way) related to that. BTW - I have never seen Runion, but I will indeed be following him. I have heard good things about him as both a young boxer and a person as well.
ReplyDeleteI feel identify with this article because I remember my best friend is an amateur boxer but I think he's so lucky because he is being sponsored by viagra online that's a great advantage.
