The Washington, DC region has started competing in the 2019 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions at the Chattanooga Convention Center in Chattanooga, TN.
In the 141-pound bracket, Nicholas Sullivan, the two-time Outstanding Boxer at the Regional Golden Gloves, won his first bout by a 5-0 decision over Mitchell Lecounte of Iowa.
William Townsel won his first bout at 165 pounds by stopping Cincinnati's Nehemiah Jones in the third round.
Shakell Daly lost his first-round contest by a tough 3-2 decision to Andre Donovan of Cleveland.

Roach, Jr. Remains Undefeated With Unanimous Decision In Las Vegas!
Upper Marlboro, MD super featherweight Lamont Roach, Jr. successfully defended his WBO International Super Featherweight title and won the NABO Super Featherweight championship with a tough, 10-round unanimous decision win over veteran world title contender Jonathan Oquendo of Vega Alta, Puerto Rico Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
According to Fightnews.com reporters Miguel Maravilla and David Robinett, the bout was a rough one. Here's their report:
"Although in the twilight of a long, workmanlike career at age 35, Oquendo came into this fight with some momentum, reeling off four straight wins after an unsuccessful challenge for the WBA featherweight title in 2015 and an ensuing 19-month layoff. That momentum was reflected in the first round, with Oquendo immediately taking the fight to his younger opponent, coming forward and stunning Roach with a left hook that drew blood from Roach’s nose for the remainder of the round, and on and off throughout the fight. Oquendo continued coming forward in the early rounds, out landing a surprisingly immobile Roach and nearly dropping him in round four with a body that caused Roach to double over in visible discomfort. The rough fourth round seemed to light a fire under Roach, who came out in round five for the first time with some urgency, keeping his distance and rocking Oquendo with lead left and right hands before dancing out of countering range. The remainder of the fight alternated rounds where Oquendo was able to walk down Roach and outland him in close quarters, and Roach realizing he needed to stick and move more, boxing smartly for short spurts and relying on his hand speed to land meaningful, albeit sporadic combinations.
Throughout the fight Roach also complained of Oquendo leading with his head, prompting referee Russell Mora to take away a point from Oquendo in round eight that fortunately was not the determining factor in the fight. In the end, a valuable learning experience for Roach, who needs to learn to fight for sustained stretches and rely more on his strengths of speed and movement if he is going to survive against the division’s elite."
Roach won the bout by scores of 96-93 and 97-93 twice to remain undefeated at 19-0-1, seven KO's. Oquendo falls to 30-6, 19 KO's. Roach should now be the number one contender for the WBO Super Featherweight title held by Masayuki Ito of Japan.

Taylor Drops Unanimous Decision In California!
Ridgeley, MD super lightweight Emanuel "Tranzformer" Taylor lost a 10-round unanimous decision to undefeated Shakhram Giyasov of Brooklyn, NY by way of Uzbekistan on Friday night at the Forum in Inglewood, CA.
According to Rocky Morales of Fightnews.com, Giyasov, a 2016 Olympic silver medalist, was the busier boxer but Taylor did have him wobbled a couple of times forcing Giyasov to hang on. Taylor tried to trade with Giyasov in the later rounds but gave up too much early. Taylor lost by scores of 99-91 (twice) and 97-93. With the win, Giyasov earns the WBA International Super Lightweight title. Taylor's record falls to 20-6, 14 KO's while Giyasov remains undefeated at 8-0, six KO's.

Hawkins, Segawa Get Wins In Philadelphia!
Baltimore, MD welterweight Malik "Iceman" Hawkins has won an eight-round unanimous decision over Andre Byrd of Jacksonville, FL Friday at The Met in Philadelphia, PA.
Hawkins seemed to be in complete control of the bout, forcing Byrd to take a knee in round seven. Hawkins won two judge's scorecards by shutout, 80-71 and one card by a 78-74 score. Hawkins remained undefeated at 15-0, nine KO's. Byrd is now 7-7-2, one KO.
Silver Spring, MD super featherweight Suliaman Segawa upset previously undefeated Gadwin "Abayarde" Rosa of Ocala, FL by eight-round unanimous decision. Waldorf, MD super lightweight Mike "Yes, Indeed" Reed scored a second-round TKO over Yardley Cruz of Las Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico on April 25th at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA.
Reed battered Cruz all throughout the contest, landing lefts and rights at will. Cruz was a punching bag with feet as he took all the punishment in the bout. Cruz never went down but he was in no condition to continue and referee Edward Hernandez stopped the bout at 1:45 seconds of the second round.
The win breaks a two-bout losing streak for Reed and he is now 24-2, 13 KO's. Cruz is now 25-14, 15 KO's.
Reed battered Cruz all throughout the contest, landing lefts and rights at will. Cruz was a punching bag with feet as he took all the punishment in the bout. Hawkins Weighs 143.4 For Eight Rounder in Philadelphia!
Malik Hawkins weighed in at 143.4 pounds for his eight-round contest against late substitute Andre Byrd of Jacksonville, FL on April 26th at The Met in Philadelphia, PA. Byrd came in at 143.9 pounds. Byrd has a record of 7-6-2, one KO and comes off a six-round unanimous decision loss to Maurice Lee on April 5th in Las Vegas, NV.

Reed Weighs 141 Pounds For Six-Round Bout In Indio!
Waldorf, MD's Mike "Yes, Indeed" Reed weighed 141 pounds for his six-round bout against Yardley Cruz of Las Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico on April 25th at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA. Cruz came in at 142 pounds.

Bobby Magruder To Be Inducted Into National Golden Gloves Hall Of Fame!
In the Beltway, he's affectionally known as "The Don King of Southern Maryland." No one has a richer Beltway Boxing history -- especially on the amateur side of local boxing -- than he does.
Now, Bobby Magruder is about to be honored on a national level as he will be this year's sole inductee into the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame when this year's edition of the national tournament begins on May 5th.
A former local amateur who competed three times against Sugar Ray Leonard, Magruder never turned professional and, in 1972, started promoting amateur boxing and training and managing local pro prospects. Magruder was also connected to the Leonard camp during his championship reigns and had a long-term working relationship with legendary trainer Angelo Dundee.
Magruder, in some capacity, has attended more than 30 National Golden Gloves tournaments. Since 2007, he has been the Delegate/President of the Washington, DC Region team. During his tenure as president, the DC region has had 10 National Golden Gloves champions. That includes a team in 2012 where three boxers -- Gervonta Davis, D'Mitrius Ballard, and Jerry Odom -- won national titles, Odom was the "Golden Boy" winner as Most Outstanding Boxer and the DC Region won the first-place team trophy for the first time. The DC region also hosted the World Golden Gloves in 2013.
In 1985, Magruder was inducted into the Washington, DC Boxing Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Maryland Hall of Fame in 1994. And now, he takes his rightful place into the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame.

More Beltway Boxers Get Opponents For May 11th Card; Wade To Face Brinson In Rematch On May 18th!
The entire TGB Promotions card that will take place on Saturday, May 11th is now complete with the last three Beltway Boxers on the card receiving opponents.
Laurel, MD super middleweight Demond "D'Best At It" Nicholson will be in a 10-round contest against Ernest Amuzu or Prichard, AL by way of Ghana. Nicholson (21-3-1, 20 KO's) is the reigning WBC USNBC and Maryland State Super Middleweight champion. However, neither title will be on the line in this contest. Nicholson won the Maryland State title in his last outing, a first-round TKO over Jessie Nicklow on March 8th in Hanover, MD.

Hernandez Harrison Scores Fourth-Round TKO In Maryland!
Undefeated Washington, DC boxer Dusty Hernandez Harrison scored a fourth-round technical knockout over Fred Jenkins, Jr. of Philadelphia, PA Saturday at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD. The bout was the main event of the inaugural KBW Promotions card.
Harrison was able to use his jab effectively throughout the contest and as the bout wore on, the jab helped break Jenkins, Jr.'s defense down. Harrison would put on the pressure in the fourth round and landed a four-punch combination that would drop Jenkins, Jr. to the canvas. At that point, referee David Braslow decided that Jenkins, Jr. could not continue and the bout was stopped at 2:17 of the fourth round. Harrison remains undefeated at 32-0-1, 18 KO's while Jenkins, Jr. falls to 10-6, three KO's.
The co-feature saw Upper Marlboro, MD heavyweight Mike "Silverback" Balogun knock out Marquise Valentine of Toledo, OH in the sixth round. Balogun had a bit of difficulty early on in the contest as his jab was coming up a little short against Valentine. As the bout wore on, Balogun's pressure increased and he started to land punches to Valentine's body and head. In the fifth round, Balogun's offense paid dividends as he dropped Valentine with a flush right hand to the head. Balogun would knock Valentine down two more times in the sixth round before referee Brent Bovell would stop the bout at 2:29 of the sixth. Balogun remains undefeated at 13-0, 10 KO's while Valentine drops to 5-6, two KO's.
Leesburg, VA cruiserweight "Mighty" Joe Jones registered a first-round TKO over previously undefeated Montez Brown of Virginia Beach, VA. Jones was able to get to Brown early, landing a perfectly timed right hook that dropped him to the canvas. Brown would recover but Jones would pressure him the rest of the way landing quick combinations to the body and a two-punch combo to the head that would force referee Kenny Chevalier to stop the bout at 1:01 of the first. Jones, who competed for the first time in the Beltway as a professional, raised his record to 10-1, eight KO's while Brown lost for the first time and his record is now 8-1, six KO's.
Hagerstown, MD super middleweight "The Sexy Albanian" Genc Pllana made short work of Jonathan Morgan of Holland, MI with a devastating knockout at 42 seconds of the first round. Pllana landed a brutal right-left combination to Morgan's head that sent Morgan crashing face first to the canvas. The bout was stopped immediately. Pllana is now 4-0, two KO's. Morgan is 0-2.

Eventually, the jab would allow Harris to come inside as Ellis's hands dropped. Harris would land two right hands to the body that sent Harris to the canvas face first. The bout was immediately stopped at 1:01 of the first round. Harris is now 3-0, three KO's while Ellis is 3-5, one KO.
Philadelphia, PA cruiser Greg "Hotshot" Hackett registered a minor upset by defeating Larry "Hitman" Pryor of Frederick, MD by four-round majority decision. Hackett was simply the busier boxer in the contest. Hackett was able to get inside and land uppercuts to Pryor's body and looping shots to the head. Pryor, who was the taller boxer in the contest, did not use that height very well. Pryor did not use his jab well and that enabled Hackett to get inside with relative ease. Judge David Braslow saw a draw at 38-38 but judges Kenny Chevalier and John Gradowski scored the bout 39-37 for Hackett, who broke a 15-bout winless streak with the win and raised his record to 3-18-1. Pryor is now 10-18, five KO's.

Russell To Defend WBC Featherweight Title Against Martinez May 18th In Brooklyn!
Capitol Heights, MD featherweight and WBC Featherweight champion "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. will make the fourth defense of his title when he faces former world champion Kiko "La Sensacion" Martinez of Alicante Comunidad Valenciana, Spain on Saturday, May 18th at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The bout will be one of the featured bouts on the Deontay Wilder-Dominic Breazeale card and will be shown on Showtime.
