Flores KO's Dews in One Minute!
Mario Flores wasted little time in knocking out Rodney Dews. Flores used a crushing right hand to drop Dews to the canvas. Dews could not beat the count and the bout was stopped at exactly one minute.
Tonight's DJ showed no mercy to the fallen Dews as he serenaded him with Ray Charles's classic "Hit The Road, Jack" after the bout was over. Actually it took Flores longer to get out of his gloves than the fight itself.
Flores is now 2-1-1, two KO's. Dews, who hasn't fought since November of 2000, is now 0-2-1.
Our co-feature is next -- The debuting Alexandru Marin of Silver Spring, MD by way of Romania takes on Jacob Ninow of Wheaton, IL
All-Beltway Cruiser Bout In Ring After Intermission!
Jones Wins Four-Round Majority Decision Over Allen!
Lawrence Jones has won a four-round majority decision over Norman "The Shadow" Allen. This was indeed a close contest between two veteran boxers that probably, in hindsight, deserved two more rounds. Neither man landed any telling blows but each man had their moments throughout.
Judge Brent Bovell scored the bout even at 38-38 while judges Steve Rados and Paul Wallace saw the contest in favor of Jones, 39-37. Jones is now 5-6-2, one KO while Allen has now lost eight in a row and is now 6-9, three KO's.
We are now in an intermission.
Reyes Scores Second-Round TKO in Pro Debut!
Edwin Reyes batters a very game Jarrett Robinson all over the ring en route to a second-round TKO in his pro debut. Reyes took control of the contest early with some blistering shots with the left and right hand in the first round. Reyes then landed some brutal right hands that knocked Robinson all around the ring. Give Robinson a lot of credit for staying upright throughout the contest.
Finally, referee Brent Bovell stopped the contest at 2:28 of the second round. Robinson is now 0-2.
This has been a whirlwind 24-plus hours for Reyes as his wife unexpectedly gave birth yesterday evening which is why he did not weigh in until earlier today.
Coming up -- a battle of Beltway veterans as Lawrence Jones of Reston, VA takes on Norman "The Shadow" Allen now fighting out of Forestville, MD.
Govan Wins By Unanimous Decision!
Eric "Inferno" Govan opens up the card with a four-round unanimous decision over Steven Tyner. Govan used a piston-like jab to set the pace in the first two rounds. Govan tried to ramp the action up in the third as he started to go to the body with solid shots. However, Govan just didn't have the power to put the veteran Tyner away.
Govan scored a shutout (40-36) on all three judge's scorecards to raise his record to 2-0. Tyner falls to 3-11-2, two KO's.
Next up: The pro debut of new father Edwin Reyes of Rockville, MD as he takes on Philadelphia, PA's Jarrett Robinson (0-1).
Govan Vs. Tyner Kicks Off Action in Frederick!

Mike Reed Interviewed By DMV Sports Zone!
The second reason is to introduce you to this program that is covering the grass roots version of local sports -- like youth and club soccer, club boxing shows and local volleyball tournaments. In other words, the sports you will not see on a regular basis in the mainstream sports media. The show is hosted by Cyprian Khumarlo, a gentleman who has stepped into the boxing ring from time to time. Khumarlo and his staff have been very visible at recent boxing cards in the area and the DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission has recently allowed them to video at their upcoming events.
Khumarlo is also putting together a documentary about the sport of boxing and the working title asks the question that many people who are unfamiliar (and sometimes, very familiar) with the sport ask the participants. They want to know "Why We Box." When the documentary is finished (which hopes to be sometime next year) we will let you know.
Here is the interview with Reed.
Martin, Roach, Jr. Win Opening Bouts At Klitschko Tournament!
Martin defeated Yelaman Serikbay of Kazakhstan on Tuesday while Roach won over China's Shuai Liu Xiao. Martin was slated to compete in a quarterfinal bout today while Roach will be in a semifinal contest on Friday.

Whitlock Battles In Florida; Update on Lisa Garland!
Landover, MD junior welterweight Cornelius Whitlock returns to action on Friday, June 28 at the Veterans Coliseum in Jacksonville, FL. Whitlock (1-0-1, one KO) last fought on January 31 and scored a third-round TKO over Shakur Jackson in Staten Island, NY. Whitlock will face the debuting Adriano Capio in a four-round contest.
You remember on June 8 when Lisa Garland of York, SC won her bout via eight-round TKO against Kerri Hill at EchoStage Lounge in DC. You may also remember our exclusive audio interview with Garland in which she tearfully mentioned that she was going to see a surgeon about some tumors they found in her chest. Well, we've kept in touch with Garland and we are happy to report that Garland tells us that the doctors do NOT believe the tumors are cancerous. Garland will have surgery next week to have the tumors removed!

Update on June 22 Card in Frederick, MD!
The head of Hardwork Promotions -- Suitland, MD cruiserweight Venroy "Hardwork" July -- will participate on this card as he looks to bounce back from suffering his first pro loss. July was stopped in the third round by Elvin Sanchez on February 22 at the DC Armory in Washington, DC
The opponent for July (13-1-2, six KO's) in this scheduled six-round encounter will be Rayford Johnson of Longview, TX (8-9, four KO's). Johnson will be fighting for the second time in 16 days as he is coming off a fourth-round TKO victory over Will McIntyre on June 6 in Metairie, LA.
In four-round contests, undefeated Frederick, MD middleweight Devar "The Warrior" Ferhadi will battle Stanley Harvey of Norfolk, VA. Ferhadi (3-0, two KO's) won a four-round unanimous decision over PJ Cajigas on April 20 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD. Harvey (1-5, one KO) will be trying to break a four-bout losing streak that includes losses to Beltway Boxers Antoine Douglas and Dillon Heyman.
In a battle of DC cruiserweights, Mario "Bazooka" Flores goes up against the returning Rodney Dews. Flores (1-1-1, one KO) comes back after battling Andre Ward to a four-round draw on October 27 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. Dews (0-1-1) has not fought since November of 2000 when he lost by first-round knockout to Darnell Wilson at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.
Germantown, MD light heavyweight Eric "Inferno" Govan battles for the second straight time at the Frederick Fight Club. Govan will face Akron, OH veteran Stephen Tyner (3-10, two KO's) who is winless in his last eight bouts.
There will also be a battle of Beltway junior middleweight veterans as DC's Lawrence Jones (4-6-2, one KO, one NC) takes on Laurel, MD's Norman "The Shadow" Allen. (6-8, three KO's). Both men are looking to turn their fortunes around -- Jones is winless in six of his last seven while Allen has dropped seven in a row.
There will also be pro debuts for locals Jeremy Trussell, Edwin Reyes and Romanian-born Alexandru Marin. Reyes, fighting out of Bladensburg, MD, will battle Jarrett Robinson of Philadelphia (0-1) in a welterweight bout while Marin takes on featherweight Jacob Ninow of Wheaton, IL (0-1). No word yet on the opponent for Baltimore, MD's Trussell.

Kennedy Loses Majority Decision in PA Rematch!
Windsor Mill, MD middleweight "Relentless" Julius Kennedy lost a 10-round majority decision in a rematch against Harry Joe Yorgey of Bridgeport, PA Saturday night at the Valley Forge Casino and Resort in Valley Forge, PA.
This was a rematch of their bout exactly three months ago at the Convention Center in Valley Forge that Yorgey won on the scorecards but many believed Kennedy earned a victory.
Reportedly, this was another hard-fought battle where Yorgey seemed to land more of the telling blows. Two of the scorecards said that with Yorgey getting 96-94 decisions. One judge saw a draw at 95-95. Yorgey also wins the vacant WBF
North American Middleweight title.
With the loss, Kennedy is now 7-6-1, three KO's. Yorgey rises to 27-2-1, 12 KO's.

Barnett Wins By Sixth-Round TKO in Self-Promoted Main Event!
After Three, Competition the Key in Main Event!
As many people commented, this is a tough contest thus far.
Rivers Uses Impressive Body Work to Stop Shakoor in Two!
Shakoor had no defense for the body shots that Rivers delivered throughout the contest. Rivers ended the contest with a sickening right to the body that made Shakoor crumple to the canvas. Shakoor could not beat the count.
Rivers is now 8-0, six KO's while Shakoor falls to 3-12-1, one KO.
Next, our main event -- Promoter Ty Barnett battles Stephan Alexander.
Grayton Dispatches Davis in First!
Grayton jumped on Davis right at the opening bell and Davis had no defense. Grayton finished Davis with a right hand to the body that dropped Davis to one knee. It did look like Grayton landed a punch after Davis went down but there was no call made on that. Referee Mark D'Antillo reached the count of 10.
Grayton is now 4-0, four KO's. Davis is now 0-2.
Co-feature up next: Kevin Rivers, Jr. vs. Rasool Shakoor -- the first scheduled six-rounder for Rivers.
\
Smith Stops Gaines in Two!
Gaines got off to another slow start as he just didn't get going against the competitive Smith. In the second, Smith took control and dropped Gaines with a solid right hand. Later in the round, Smith landed vicious combinations that sent Gaines stumbling towards a neutral corner forcing referee Brent Bovell to stop the contest at 2:49.
Gaines's record falls to 4-2, one KO while Smith evens his record at 1-1, one KO.
Up next, David Grayton vs. Jamaal Davis.
After Intermission, It's Time to be 'Misunderstood!'
Kelly Lands Brutal Right to Score Third-Round Knockout!
In reality, Kelly had to work for this one as Myers's awkward style made things very difficult at times in the contest. Things got rough enough in the first round where referee Joe Cooper called both men over and gave a stern lecture to the competitors.
Finally midway through the third, Kelly landed the brutal right that sent Myers to the canvas in a neutral corner. Cooper immediately stopped the bout without a count. Myers probably could have continued and vehemently complained to that effect but the bout was stopped.
Kelly remains perfect at 4-0, four KO's while Myers falls to 5-17-1, three KO's.
Intermission time.
Reed Wins By Unanimous Decision!
Magruder Makes Short Work of Beeman!

We'll be back when this begins.

Hi everyone and thanks for joining us from the third floor ballroom at the Washington Convention Center for the Top Flight Promotions card. This card was slated to start at this time but we are a good 30 minutes at least from that.
At intermission, the DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission will honor former chairperson Cora Masters Barry.
We'll be back when we get underway.

Remember, we have this coming Saturday, June 15 at the Washington Convention Center in DC for the Top Flight Promotions card and Saturday, June 22 has Hardwork Promotions at the Frederick Fight Club in Frederick, MD.
As we move into July, we have Saturday, July 13 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD with a Keystone Boxing card that is slated to include "Swift" Jarrett Hurd, Mike "Yes Indeed" Reed and "Mr. Amazing" Greg Newby.
We've already told you about the Saturday, July 20 card at Coppin State University in Baltimore, MD that is slated to feature Gervonta "Rambo" Davis and Tyrieshia "Lady Tiger" Douglas. We are also hearing that this will be a pro-am card that is slated to feature the likes of Joey Veazey, Lorenzo "Truck" Simpson and Mia "Killer Bee" Ellis.
Right now, the only pro show we know about in August is a Jeter Promotions card that is tentatively slated for August 3 at Club One Fitness. Both Tony "Mo Better" Jeter and Phil Jackson Benson are scheduled to defend their WBC Fecarbox titles on the card.
Looking ahead to September, we can confirm that there will be a Jimmy Lange Boxing Promotions card on Saturday, September 21 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.
What we can't completely confirm is who is going to be on that card. Right now, it looks like WBC Women's Middleweight champion Tori "Sho Nuff" Nelson will have a title bout on the card and Todd "White Lightning" Wilson is slated to participate. We can't even confirm that Jimmy Lange himself will be on the card as he is still recovering from knee surgery. We've been told he is back in the gym but whether he will be ready by September 21 remains a mystery.

Recap From DC!
Lisa Garland of York, SC scored an eight-round TKO over "The Rage" Kerri Hill of Little Rock, AK. Garland dominated the contest, which made women's boxing history as the title bout (WIBC and WBU Junior Welterweight titles were on the line) was scheduled for 12 three-minute rounds.
Garland eventually earned the stoppage by trapping Hill against the ropes until referee Kenny Chevalier stopped the contest at 1:06 of the eighth.
Garland is now 11-6, six KO's. Hill falls to 4-25-1, one KO. Garland has beaten Hill three times in her career.
The women's title bout was the lone bright spot in what was, honestly, an awful night of boxing with every other bout on the card ending inside the first three minutes of action.
The bout between Stevensville, MD middleweight and WBC Fecarbox champion Tony "Mo Better" Jeter and Jimmy "The Dream" LeBlanc of South Boston, MA ended in a no-contest after 1:08 of the first round. Jeter is now 15-3-1, 10 KO's, one NC while LeBlanc is now 13-25-4, five KO's, one NC.
Newport News, VA heavyweight Jerry "Slug" Forrest scored a TKO over Derrick Aiken of Wilson, NC in just 36 seconds. Forrest is 7-0, six KO's while Aiken is 2-12, two KO's.
White Plains, MD lightweight Terron "Kid" Grant stopped Joseph Dixon of North Carolina at 1:47. Grant is 6-0, four KO's while Dixon is 0-4.
DC featherweight Marcus Bates dropped Joshua Hinnant of North Carolina with a right hand that eventually forced Hinnant to give up the bout at 1:34. Both boxers made their pro debuts.
Baltimore super featherweight Gervonta "Rambo" Davis used a wicked body shot to stop Jonathan Gears of Wilson, NC at 1:36. Davis is 3-0, three KO's while Gears was making his pro debut.
Jordan "The Kidd" Peters of DC blasted Wilson, NC's Jonathan Ganaway with a right hand that put him away at 48 seconds in the debut bout for both boxers.
DC welterweight Jarrell "Hell-Rell" Harris got the knockout parade going with a stoppage of Rahim Williams of Wilson, NC at 1:19 of the first in his pro debut. Williams is 0-2.
G Promotions put on this card.
Here is the BATB Post-Fight Wrap-Up where Juan Marshall and I make some pointed comments about what we saw tonight.
Also, we had what turned out to be a very revealing and emotional interview with the new WIBC and WBU champion Lisa Garland.
We also talked to undefeated Baltimore super featherweight Gervonta Davis:
Garland Wins WIBC and WBU Titles With Eight-Round TKO!
Women's Title Bout Is Through Four!
Jeter-LeBlanc Is No-Contest After First Round!
Update: From another angle, the punch looked like a shot to the side of LeBlanc's head. Given this type of situation, an appeal could be forthcoming.
Forrest Has Shortest TKO Of Night!
Jerry "Slug" Forrest scores the shortest TKO of the night, needing just 36 seconds to dispatch of Derrick Aiken. Forrest used two right hands to drop Aiken. The second one forced referee Kenny Chevalier to stop the contest. Forrest is now 7-0, six KO's while Aiken is 2-12, two KO's and has been stopped for the 11th time in his career.
Our co-feature is next -- Tony "Mo Better" Jeter vs. Jimmy "The Dream" LeBlanc. Scheduled for 10 rounds.
Grant Follows Suit With First-Round TKO!
The trend continues as White Plains, MD lightweight Terron "Kid" Grant scored a first-round TKO over Joseph Dixon of North Carolina. Grant landed a couple of right hands that dropped Dixon to his knees. Dixon beat the count, thought about continuing but decided against it. The bout was stopped at 1:47.
Grant is now 6-0, four KO's. Dixon is 0-4.
Next, heavyweights Jerry Forrest vs. Derrick Allen.
Bates Scores TKO In..Guess Which Round!
Yep. Another fight, another first-round TKO. Marcus Bates of DC drops Joshua Hinnant of North Carolina with a right hand. Hinnant dropped hard on the back of his head in front of my ringside position. Hinnant did get up but was telling referee Dr. Joseph Cooper that he didn't want to continue. The bout was stopped at 1:34.
Both fighters were making their pro debuts. So far, we have seen a little over five minutes of actual ring action.
Next up, Terron "Kid" Grant takes on Joseph Dixon.
Davis Lands Body Shot To Win in..First Round!
We thought we might get a second round in this one as Jonathan Gears looked like he was trying to stay away from Gervonta Davis. However, Davis landed a brutal body shot that folded up Gears like a cheap suit. Gears could not beat the count and the bout was stopped at 1:36 of the first.
Davis is now 3-0, three KO's. Gears was making his pro debut.
Next is the pro debut of Marcus Bates as he takes on the equally debuting Joshua Hinnant.
Action Continues With Gervonta Davis!
Peters Scores Another First-Round Knockout!
Jordan Peters of DC follows suit as he blasts Jonathan Ganaway with a right hand that stops the contest at 48 seconds of the first round. Quite honestly, Ganaway had absolutely NO business being in the ring as he looked like he couldn't spell "fight." Both guys made their pro debut tonight.
And amazing as it seems, we are now going to an intermission.
Harris Scores TKO in First!
Jerrell "Hell-Rell' Harris made his pro debut a successful one as he stops Rahim Williams of Wilson, NC at 1:19 of the first round. Harris dropped Williams twice during the round before referee Brent Bovell stopped the contest. Williams is 0-2.
Next, the debut of Jordan Peters as he takes on Anthony Ganaway.
Jarrell Harris Kicks Off DC Card!
The pro debut of DC welterweight Jerrell "Hell-Rell"Harris (left) will start tonight's card as he takes on Rahim Williams of North Carolina in a four-round contest. Williams is 0-1.
Good Evening From DC!

The main event will be the women's title bout tonight preceded by the Tony Jeter contest against Jimmy LeBlanc. We will carry you throughout the night here and on Juan Marshall's ProAm Fight Talk with his great pictures.
Be back very soon.

Boxing Comes to Coppin State University July 20!
Undefeated Baltimore featherweight Gervonta "Rambo" Davis (2-0, two KO's) is scheduled to headline the card in a six-round contest. Also slated for the card are Beltway prospects Tyrieshia "Lady Tiger" Douglas (2-0, one KO)of Baltimore and "The Baby-Face Assassin" Yurii Polishchuk (1-0, one KO) of Lanham, MD.
The card is also slated to mark the return of Baltimore light heavyweight Willie "For Real" Williams (12-6-2, three KO's). Williams has not fought since dropping a six-round unanimous decision to Frankie Filippone in August of 2010 in Virginia Beach, VA. Williams was in a solid trilogy with fellow Baltimore boxer Henry Mayes in late 2008 and early 2009. The first two bouts ended in draws. The third bout was won by Mayes as he knocked out Williams to win the Maryland State Light Heavyweight title.
There will also be two pro debuts. Noted amateur Glenn Dezurn of Baltimore will begin punching for pay in the super featherweight division while William Cason of Baltimore does the same at junior welterweight.
In the interest of full disclosure, I must tell you that this card is somewhat special to me on a personal level. It's not so much because of who is on the card, it's where the card is located. For those new to this blog, I have been connected to Coppin State for the past 19 years as the public address announcer for the Men's and Women's Basketball team. The Physical Education Complex has been in existence since the fall of 2009 and it is a beautiful facility. Administrators have wanted to open up the facility for events that would bring in more members of the community and I am very happy to see the merging of these two entities.
More information on this card as it becomes available.
