Summer Olympics Postponed Until 2021!

The International Olympic Committee has decided to postpone the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan until the summer of 2021.  The IOC faced pressure from a number of countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, who requested a delay in the games due to the coronavirus outbreak.  Canada and Australia threatened to pull their teams from the games if they continued as scheduled.

Representatives of the IOC recently met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and local organizers and they decided that the games could not go ahead as scheduled this year.  Many athletes complained that they were unable to train properly due to the coronavirus.

What does this mean for the Beltway?  One of our boxers, Keyshawn Davis of Alexandria, VA, is a member of the United States Olympic Team and was looking to qualify for the games.  Whether or not Davis will wait for 2021 remains to be seen.  By the way, the IOC says the games will be held "no later than summer 2021" but will still be called the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
