Two repeating Regional Golden Gloves champions will lead the DC Region into the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions next Sunday in Lafayette, LA based on their impressive wins Saturday at the Regional Golden Gloves at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD.
Alexandria, VA 165-pounder Troy Isley won his second straight Open Division regional title defeating Ashton Sykes of Columbia, MD. Isley, who is ranked second in the country by USA Boxing in his weight class, was very accurate and outgunned the game Sykes. Isley was also named the Outstanding Boxer of the tournament.
Hagerstown, MD's Genc Pllana will also make his second consecutive trip to the nationals as he stopped William Jones of Hopewell, VA in the third round to win the 178-pound Open title. Pllana broke Jones down enough to gain three standing-eight counts during the contest and sealed the victory after knocking Jones down with a crunching left to the body.
The Avelar Brothers of Germantown, MD split in their bouts. Wilfredo Avelar won the 141-pound title with a victory over Diego Abregu of Leesburg, VA. However, Tommy Avelar lost his bid for the 132-pound championship by decision to Keyshawn Davis of Alexandria, VA.
At 152 pounds, Keeshawn Williams of Washington, DC won the title with a strange-looking third-round TKO over Jacques Jean of Alexandria. Williams was in control of the bout for the most part. However, Jean seemed to at least be competing and fighting back. Late in the third round, Jean's cornerman saw something he did not like and asked that the bout be stopped.
Steven Kelly of Fayetteville, NC captured the 201-pound title with a decision victory over Thomas Mottinger of Seaford, DE and Malik Titus of Baltimore, MD won the 201+-pound championship with a win over George Harris of Alexandria.
