Russell Loses Olympic Medal Bid By Split Decision!

The Olympic journey for Capitol Heights, MD's Gary Antuanne Russell is over.  Earlier today, Russell lost a tough split decision to Fazliddin Gaibnazarov of Uzbekistan in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

Russell fought what looked like a quality first round, as he put the pressure on Gaibnazarov. However, the judges scored the first round in favor of Gaibnazarov.  During the second round, Gaibnazarov began to move side-to-side to avoid Russell's forward attack.  The referee repeatedly asked the boxer from Uzbekistan to come forward and box but did not take away any points.  Russell also suffered a cut over the right eye in the second.

Russell put on a solid effort in the third as he landed solid punches and tried to win the contest but it wasn't enough.  Russell lost by a 2-1 decision.
