All four local ladies advanced to the semifinals of the USA Olympic Trials Qualifier in Baltimore on Wednesday while only one man moved into the quarterfinals in Philadelphia.
Middleweight Franchon Crews of Baltimore did well in front of the hometown crowd at the Baltimore Harbor Hotel by scoring a TKO over Shmelle Baldwin of Wilmington, DE. Also at 165 pounds, Alexandria, VA's Iesha Kenney won a 3-0 decision over Jennifer Barnes of Little Rock, AR.
At 132 pounds, Tiara Brown of Oxon Hill, MD moved into the semis with a 3-0 decision over Ariel Arismendez of Tolleson, AZ while Amelia Moore of Millersville, MD advanced with a 2-1 win over N'Yteeyah Sherman of Akron, OH.
The semifinals begin on Thursday night at 8:15 PM at the Baltimore Harbor Hotel. The winners will clinch berths at the US Olympic Trials. Brown will face Moore in the semifinals at 132. Crews will take on Martha Fabela of Oakland, CA while Kenney will battle Cierra Taylor of Rochester, NY at 165.
On the men's side, it was another tough day as only one of three Beltway amateurs advanced to the quarterfinals at the Stadium Holiday Inn in Philadelphia. Ernest Hall of Baltimore won a 2-1 decision over D'Angelo Keyes of Houston, TX in the 132-pound class. Burke, VA's Jalonte Cole lost his bout at 132 to Martino Jules of Allentown, PA by a 3-0 score. At 123 pounds, Malik Jackson of DC lost a 2-1 decision to Christian Williams of Chicago, IL.
