Only two Beltway amateurs remain in contention at this week's Olympic Trials Qualifier in Colorado Springs, CO. One boxer was a well-known name before the event. The other may have had a name established during this event.
Gary Antuanne Russell of Capitol Heights, MD advanced to the semifinals of the 141-pound competition with a 3-0 decision win over Richardson Hutchins of Brooklyn, NY. Russell will now face Kevin Ceja-Ventura of Omaha, NE in the evening session tonight. Russell is the youngest brother of 2008 US Olympian Gary Russell, Jr. who is now the WBC Featherweight champion and Antuanne Russell is a former National Golden Gloves champion so his name comes as no surprise.
However, Amelia Moore of Millersville, MD may have put her name on the map with her performance thus far in this competition. On Thursday, Moore advanced to the semifinals of the 132-pound division with a 2-1 decision over Dalia Gomez of Oakland, CA. Moore has a tough task in the afternoon semifinals as she will square off with Jajaira Gonzalez of Glendora, CA who won a gold medal at the recent Youth and Junior World Championships in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Also on Thursday, Jalonte Cole of Burke, VA lost his quarterfinal contest at 132 pounds by a 3-0 decision to Adam Castillo of Lubbock, TX while Franchon Crews of Baltimore dropped a 2-1 decision to rival Tika Hemingway of Brackenridge, PA at 165 pounds.
