For Lamont Peterson, it was definitely too little, too late. Peterson frustrated Danny Garcia with movement and solid defense in the early rounds but didn't do enough offensively and lose a 12-round majority decision in front of a packed house at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY and a national television and radio audience.
Peterson was very impressive in the final four rounds of the contest battering Garcia with hard shots but it simply was not enough on the scorecards. One judge scored the bout a draw at 114-114 but was overruled by the other two judges who scored the bout 115-113.
Peterson is now 32-3-1, 17 KO's and no longer holds the IBF Super Lightweight championship. The IBF said earlier this week that they would strip Peterson of the title if he lost tonight. Garcia remains undefeated at 30-0, 17 KO's.
How can they strip him if it's a catchweight fight???
ReplyDeleteBecause he took this bout instead of his mandatory defense. It's actually irrelevant because Peterson was going to vacate the title win or lose.
ReplyDeleteAh, didn't know about the mandatory defense. Makes sense now. So what's next for Lamont? Trying to regain that title? Rematch vs. Garcia? Up to the next weight class?
ReplyDeleteI think he definitely goes up to welterweight. I don't know if the Garcia camp will want a rematch.
ReplyDeleteAnyone care to chime in on how they scored it?
ReplyDelete115-113, Garcia.
ReplyDeleteI had it 113-115 Lamont Peterson no way danny won....I would like to say the judges scored the bout with favor. Also thank you Gary for keeping our dmv boxing scene relevant and updated 24/7.
ReplyDeleteCorrection 115-113 Peterson
