Interesting night for Beltway Boxers on both coasts Friday night.
DC heavyweight Danny "Smooth" Kelly suffered his first pro loss as he dropped a six-round unanimous decision to late sub Avery Gibson of Los Angeles at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, CA. According to reports, Kelly was simply outworked for the duration of the bout and lost by scores of 60-53, 59-54 and 57-56.
Kelly's record is now 6-1-1, five KO's while Gibson rises to 4-6-2, one KO.
DC middleweight Kareem "Reemo" Martin did indeed appear on this card and made short work of the debuting Taif Harris of Palmdale, CA dropping him two times en route to a first-round stoppage at 1:57. Martin is now 2-0-1, two KO's.
Meanwhile at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Tampa, FL, former WBO Junior Welterweight champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley captured the vacant WBF (World Boxing Federation) North American Junior Welterweight title with a second-round TKO over late sub Dedrick Bell of Memphis, TN. Bell replaced David Rodela in the bout. Corley is now 41-22-1, 25 KO's while Bell dropped to 12-20-1, seven KO's.
