When BATB started in 2005, one of the goals to attract attention from other media to the Beltway Boxing scene. So it is always exciting to see an article like this one by our good friends at StiffJab.com.
StiffJab has done an outstanding job of bringing light to the local scene in its own right and does it again with a list of 13 locals that boxing fans should know more about.

13 Young DMV Boxers You Should Know
ReplyDeleteThe big question is how much longer Golden Boy will keep putting him on undercards if his opposition fails to improve. For Gary Russell Jr. he has two important “0”s on his record- 0 defeats and 0 noteworthy opponents
I agree with some of the picks but wow what about the other's?
ReplyDeleteWhy haven't you mention Yurii Polishchuk. Is he fighting from DMV?
ReplyDeleteGreat article, thanks for sharing Gary.
ReplyDeleteYes, he is. However, he is, right now, not where some of these boxers on this list are.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Danny Kelly y'all never mention the kid he is truly loved by few HATED by MENY UNDERSTOD BY NONE
ReplyDeleteWho ever wrote that comment hit the nail on the head, but those who hate on him now(they no who they are) will be riding his dick later
ReplyDeleteDanny fought a 12-2-2 fighter with 8 KO's with only 5 fights and Won.
ReplyDeleteTell me what fighter besides Tez that took a risk like that. Danny y'all just keep doing y'all and they will see the outcome.
Mr Gary how come Richie McCombs aint on dat list sirs? He is going to finally win a fight his comeback I am promise you that. Stop hating on the best fighter ever to come out the DMV.
ReplyDeleteRichie Puffy McCombs, 0-99-1, 0 Kos
Tez took a risk??... when did that happen?? lol thats funny
ReplyDeleteGoing into the backyard of an undefeated fighter and challenging. Some if the other fighters named haven't fought out of the DMV.
DeleteI think the Frank Galarza bout in New York, especially since Galarza won big last month, would qualify.
ReplyDeleteStiffjab lets anyone write for them and their writers are extremely biased so I wouldn't take that list seriously.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gary, much obliged.
ReplyDeleteDanny Kelly and Alantez Fox just missed making the list. Both are excellent young prospects and if they keep winning, will definitely make it next time as people like Emmanuel Taylor and Gary Russell Jr age out.
Alantez' draw against Frank Galarza looks a lot better these days. He probably would have been the next person on the list if we had more room. But we will continue to cover all the local fighters as they climb the ranks.
Finally, to our anonymous friend, I find your accusations of bias interesting. Who exactly are we biased in favor of? As for the standards of our writers, we are more selective than almost any boxing site I know of, and I personally vouch for their quality. You can google me if you have any questions about my journalism expertise.
Thanks for all the feedback. We appreciate you all checking out the site, and please stop by again.

I googled you and what was I suppose to find that backed up your expertise on boxing. Besides going on the internet and opening your own boxing blog, what have you done. Appreciate the articles supporting the young boxers, but it's ok to say you overlooked Danny and Tez . You even highlighted an amateur before them .
ReplyDeleteDidn't Stiffjab create a belt for Dusty ?
ReplyDeleteDon't let this guy create a riff between these young guys. He was just trying to do his best with the limited knowledge he has . Good job man. These other guys don't have homemade web sights . Do your thing . The DMV needs more like you. If you only want 13 that's up to you. It's your news bloggie thing .
ReplyDeleteStiffjab is the shot caller with the WBC and so its quite possible they did allow Dusty to fight for the WBC belt in New York. Boxing is about who you know in the game. Stiffjab has also got Dusty on HBO and ESPN. Stiffjab are a Hispanic crew and they look out for their own. I have never hear of a WBC World Youth Belt until Dusty won it. Stiffjab creates what they want, when they want. Just like the 13 top DMV boxers.
ReplyDeleteStiffJab has NOTHING to do with the WBC. They have no connection to them. Secondly, StiffJab is not Hispanic in origin, Gautham Nagesh is not Hispanic. I will let him explain his origin if he chooses but he is not Hispanic. Your post has no basis in reality whatsoever!
ReplyDeleteAside from starting Stiff Jab, I have also written about boxing for The Washington Post, Boxing Scene, Ring Magazine, The Queensberry Rules, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, and many other publications. I am a member of Boxing Writers Association of America and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board. I have covered literally hundreds of professional fights from ringside, and have even spent a lot of time training and learning the technique of the sport myself.
ReplyDeleteAll that is not to say I am an expert on boxing. I'm sure there are many fans who know a lot more about the sport than I do. Definitely any fighter or trainer would know more than myself. But I am a professional journalist, who has a great deal of experience in the field. The list is not just based on what I see, but on the opinions of local fighters, trainers and boxing experts besides our staff. That's why, for example, Kareem Martin made it. Because everyone who knows him thinks he's going to be a world champion some day, including Al Haymon.
Finally, I want to make it clear that Stiff Jab has never accepted any money or anything of value from any promoter, sanctioning body or fighter. In fact, many of the boxing writers you probably hold in high esteem are far more likely to biased or conflicted than myself. I am a full-time professional reporter at the largest newspaper in the U.S. I am strictly bound from taking anything from the people I cover.
I am also not Hispanic, nor particularly inclined to favor Hispanic fighters. The vast majority of the fighters we cover on Stiff Jab are African-American. We know who the local fanbase is, and we do our best to represent them fairly.
I hope some of you will consider actually reading the site and seeing that what we try to do is the same thing as Gary: bring coverage to the local fight scene, and help recognize the talent and hard work that our local boxers put in. We may be a homegrown site, but all great things start small. If you have any other questions or comments, I encourage you to reach out using the email below.
