Boxing Returns the 'Madness' to the Washington Convention Center December 14!

The final DC boxing card of 2013 will take place on Saturday, December 14 at the Washington Convention Center and will mark a return of one of the legendary local promotional companies.

First, a quick history lesson.  During my "Boxing Spotlight" days in the 1990's, there were some incredible promotional organizations who consistently put out great cards.  In the Baltimore area, we were there for the start of the Ballroom Boxing series at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie.  Promoter Stu Satosky was holding things down at Martin's West in Woodlawn.  At the Teamsters Hall in Baltimore, there was Top of the Hill Promotions, headed by Tank Hill.

In Prince George's County, there was Sunrise Promotions who first brought boxing to the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro while Blood, Sweat and Tears Promotions was promoting cards at Martin's Crosswinds in Greenbelt.

In Virginia, Satellite Boxing and Han Kim Promotions were doing cards at the original ABC Auditorium in Alexandria, VA.

In DC during that time period, many promoters came and went. They did maybe one card and weren't heard from again.  However, one promotion set the standard for bringing some outstanding cards to the city -- Madness Boxing.  This promotional company, headed by Tyrone Johnson, presented all the legendary boxers of that time period, many times on cards that had incredible star power.

Madness Boxing returns on December 14 looking to recapture the magic of those days. The card is slated to feature Oxon Hill, MD light heavyweight Alexander "The Great" Johnson (14-1, six KO's), and undefeated Baltimore welterweight James "Keep 'Em Sleepin'" Stevenson (20-0, 13 KO's) in separate co-feature bouts.

Also scheduled to be on the card are Beltway Boxers Kevin "K-Smoov" Rivers, Jr. , Shadeed Floyd, Renaldo "Misunderstood" Gaines, Terron "Kid" Grant, Joshua "Marvelous Mo" Parker and Cornelius "The Bodysnatcher" Whitlock.

Two bouts have already been signed for the card.  Undefeated DC light heavyweight "Mr. Amazing" Greg Newby (9-0, five KO's is scheduled to take on veteran James Denson of Akron, OH (5-15, two KO's)  Also, Laurel, MD heavyweight "The Big Ticket" Dwayne McRae (11-3, six KO's) will battle Robert Dunton of Wilmington, DE (9-10-1, six KO's).  No word yet on how many rounds these bouts are scheduled for.

This card will be a pro-am card that will start at 6 PM.  We'll have more info on this card as it becomes available.

  10. Here's your reason -- there is nothing to be gained at this point with this fight.

Buchanan has only fought once since 2010 so he is looking to get back in the swing of things. Some promoters in the area have said he has priced himself out of bouts locally.

Johnson is still considered a rising prospect and unless there is a title of some sort with the bout, it shouldn't happen.

The bottom line is that it goes back to the old adage we use in this area -- "if it don't make dollars, it don't make sense."

I agree. As attractive as this bout looks for the area, it, in reality, makes absolutely no sense at this point.

  11. It's a great bout for the region, makes sense for a promoter and the fans. But it don't make sense for either guy at this point of career. Both guys can fight and make noise why side track that for local money.

  12. Brian, you always think you know it all.

  13. Not really a person asked why I thought it won't happen I responded just an opinion.

  14. So brain is local Money not good enough any more and Garry Buchanan is not trying to get rich off of a fight with Johnson Buchanan is trying to shake off some ring rust, and get a win, but if you don't think it will happen then ok I understand your the boss and you know a lot about boxing

  15. How top dog William he would KO both them

  16. We tend to forget that boxing is also called "prizefighting." Therefore you go for the best prize you can find.

Local money is fine if there is not an option to make more. Both these guys could make more down the road if they didn't rush something like this.

Also, do you really think that Buchanan wants to "shake ring rust" against a guy that's 14-1? That wouldn't make a lot of sense.

  17. Garry Johnson isn't that good and Buchanan has got into the ring with better than AL so ring rust is just what it is so but everybody hates Buchanan so they going to try and keep him down but the fact of the matter is Buchanan is a very good fighter so tell these DC fighters to fight some good comp and you would see what happen knocked out or they going to quit like AL did so say what you want and plz don't bring top dog in this he got knocked out in the amateurs with head gear on at rosecroffe so plz don't bring his no chin having ass in this, before we start talking bout his crack head father and jr is going to start taking dives like his dad, plus do anybody think that AL Johnson or top dog jr could go 12rds with Andre ward he'll know they would get stop and everybody knows that so plz keep it real

  18. I really wanna see this fight too. I got Poo ripping Johnson with body shots for the ko win.

  19. My comments have nothing to do with any feelings towards Buchanan. In fact, I like him and want to see him fight again. People want to see this bout because they want to see who is the best in the Beltway. NO boxer here should strive simply for that. I am not saying this bout shouldn't ever happen. However, without at the very least a regional title at stake (NABF, USBA), it shouldn't happen now!

  20. This card would also be a great stage for Seth Mitchell to make his return. Maybe they could put him in with a guy he has a chance to beat, just wheel in Magomed Abdusalamov. If Seth ran and held all night it may be so boring it will put us into a.......coma.

    1. You even learned how to spell his name to make that tasteless joke. Pitiful.

  21. Sugarpoo 20-2-13kos/ never been stoped never been down fights every body/ so who says he's a bum leave your name so we can talk about this!!!! He's not a bum I think he needs to fight more/ but who ever called Buchanan a bum most not go to any fights here in the DMV because the guys that hometown are fighting are bums but it's prob some one that smiles in his face but is a hater Behind his back oh we'll we will never find out but I bet, he will be a world champ one day/ he could have even beat Andre ward if he would have done the right thing but he wanted to take it lightly and he lost a 12rd to ward but you live and you learn but be honest with your self do you really think top dog jr or AL Johnson will ever be champs hell no, do you think that any middle weight in the dmv could last 12rds with Andre ward hell no, top dog jr would have got knocked out in the 1st rd I'm just telling the truth people that know Thomas and his chin will tell you the same thing!!!! And AL Johnson people that knows him knows that he has no heart y'all saw him on show time, and y'all know that he would have quit if he was fighting Andre ward in like the 5th or 6th round I'm just keeping it real and to the other middle weights and super middle weights in the DMV we are not going to know how good they really are until they fight somebody like Andre ward or on that level, so stop hating and go out here and take a step up like Buchanan did, he could have stayed in the Dmv and just got into the ring with bums like they are doing with the keystone fighters but no he will fight he will fight he will fight not pick and choose!!!! When lose or draw he took a chance with the best super middle weight in the world and lasted 12rds on short notice so say what you want who else is going to do that or even try nobody everybody just going to keep fighting bums and walking around like they all that but your not step your game up and fight somebody then we will see what your really made of!!!!! Ps top dog jr is going to get knocked out by that guy MACK!!!! Real talk

    ReplyDelete
  22. And when you pop poo dick out your mouth you will realize he is washed up! He lasted 12 with ward wooo fucking hooo! I guess you can say he is a survivor.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It can only be 3 people talking shyt about poo/ Smalls or top dog or al Johnson, but if poo is washed up so is dusty he got drop and almost knocked out at the convention center, Lamont Peterson got knocked out, al Johnson quit on showtime, and top dog jr got knocked out with head gear on at rosecroft, but poo never been knocked out of drop or beat up in a fight so hate all you want but just know that poo is a very good fighter and he did more or just the same as everybody else but I remember seeing poo train his self for years and still his rec is 20-2-13kos so look at everybody else rec, they train everyday and still get knocked out or quit,so I know Kevin Smalls be on here talking shyt, and the white guy buddy from old school, and Reggie brown, and top dog jr and al Johnson, and Ty barnet, and duke, and the snitch nigga man, from central ave,so I'm getting closer to seeing all the haters but all the people that was just named don't do shyt for Buchanan so who gives a shyt!!! Poo has a chin he's going to be world champ one day wether y'all like it or not!!!! And Barry hunter I didn't forget you fake talking behind people back ass nigga, if it wasn't for the petersons no body would even know your gay ass!!! ;-) so anybody that want to talk bad about Henry Buchanan go right ahead and wish the worst for him but some of you are dead and don't even know it for the rest your just dying slowly!!! Hate him love him who cares y'all don't know poo because if y'all did you would know that sugarpoo can fight and if he can't do nothing else he knows who Jesus is,,, so keep talking but he will be champ and nobody on this blog can do anything about it!!!
