Gary Russell, Jr. Named Mandatory WBO Featherweight Title Challenger!

Undefeated Capitol Heights, MD featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. has been named the number one challenger for the WBO Featherweight title and is expected to battle for the belt sometime in the next 180 days.

Russell (23-0, 13 KO's) was only recently informed of this development. “On October 9th, my team received written confirmation from the WBO that I am the mandatory challenger for their featherweight world title,” Russell said in a press release. “I’m ready for my first world title fight and cannot wait for the fight to get made.”

Russell has fought twice in 2013, winning 10-round unanimous decisions over Juan Ruiz and Vyacheslav Gusev.  Russell has been the number two challenger since March.  Orlando Salido won the vacant WBO Featherweight championship with a seventh-round TKO over Orlando Cruz on October 12 in Las Vegas.

  2. Cant be top gun if your NOT fighting anyone. If your not a big name, what do you have to bring to the table? If Russell does win a belt, im sure of it they will make sure to match him up with someone that will beat him. My advise is to be ready and work harder G cause they will give you the belt, but not to keep it

  4. I wouldn't match Gary with Salido. Huge body puncher with a wealth of experience.

  5. Salido would punish lil g just like he does any southpaw

  6. Gary has the hand speed and power to take a questionable chinned Salido out.

  7. Gary would win this fight..however. Salido is going to lose to Lomachenko and there is no way in hell Gary is going to accept a fight with Lomachenko.
