UPDATE: Kisner Drops Split Decision in Chicago!

Ferndale, MD cruiserweight "Slick" Nick Kisner lost a six-round split decision to undefeated Junior Anthony Wright of Evanston, IL Friday night at US Cellular Field in Chicago, IL.

Kisner won on one judge's scorecard at 58-56 but two other judges saw the bout 59-55 for Wright. Kisner was the first boxer to go the distance with Wright, who had not gone past three rounds in his young career.

Kisner loses for the first time in his pro career and is now 12-1-1, five KO's.  Wright is now 8-0, seven KO's.

Here is the complete recap from Sam Geraci of Fightnews.com:

In his first test to date, undefeated cruiserweight Junior Wright (8-0, 7 KOs) of Evanston IL, managed to pull-off a majority decision over Nick "The Slick" Kisner (12-1-1, 5 KOs) of Baltimore, MD. When the scores were initially read, Kisner was awarded the decision, but judge Mauro Di Fiore's score was inaccurately given to ring announcer Thomas Treiber in favor of Kisner. Several minutes later, the correct scores were given: 58-56 for Kisner and 59-55 twice for Wright. Although Fightnews scored the bout in Wright's favor, this was an ugly and difficult bout to score with neither fighter landing many clean shots that could have gone either way.

In the first, Wright cut off the ring and looked to back Kisner to the ropes to pound the body and land his dynamic right hand while Kisner looked to counter with the left hook from a distance. Although Wright continued to back Kisner to the ropes, anytime Wright closed the distance, Kisner either countered with his left or held. The round probably could have gone either way, but Kisner appeared to pull it off.

Throughout the second, Wright plowed forward without his jab but managed to back Kisner to the ropes to land several significant body shots. Although Wright managed to land the most significant blows of the round, at times, Kisner managed to thwart Wright's attack by firing shots off the ropes and then clinching. Another close round, but Wright's aggression and body shots might have done enough.

Throughout the third, Kisner frustrated Wright, who did not have any answers for Kisner's elusive style followed by clinching. Even though Wright lost every second of the round, he managed to score with a big right in the final fifteen seconds followed by a small flurry against the ropes that should have done enough to steal the round because Kisner failed to land anything of significance.

In the fourth, Wright continued to plow forward and then get countered but did manage to score with several solid rights that probably did enough to steal another ugly and uneventful round. In the final minute of the round, however, Wright was caught with a solid counter left hook that might have cost him the round.

In the fifth, there were more ugly exchanges followed by holding with referee Celestino Ruiz forced to be the most active participant in the bout. Again, the round was ugly and it could have gone either way as Wright landed the more meaningful shots while coming forward at all times and Kisner countered effectively at times. In the final minute, Wright did begin to find a home for his left hook, which probably gave him the round.

In the sixth, Wright's durability and left hook carried the round. In fact, the sixth was probably the only round for which there should not have been any debate.

Both Wright and Kisner are talented fighters who deserve another opportunity to prove themselves, but please, let's not let them fight each other again!

  1. Kisner was slapping throughout the fight. He should have stayed an amateur.

  2. Jr. Wright is a BEAST! He said he is now going down to 175. I think Nick would do well in the Super Middle-Weight Division 168. He is fast and the lighter weights would help him to avoid the power shots. Nick needs to train in Philly. He'd be a completely different fighter after doing so. He will bounce back from this loss-mark my words. He has been through rougher times than this and he is a survivor. Big Balls for taking this fight in the first place.

  3. Nick is a cruiserweight and always has been through his amateur and pro career. He weighed in at 199 last night, no way in hell he drops 30 pounds and moved down to 168. Wright would have to drop 20 pounds to move down to light heavyweight, that is a lot of weight to lose. It is a shame that Nick lost but i give him credit for stepping up early in his career when most beltway boxers crush bums for 20 fights or so before they get big fight.

  8. Lets cheer the loss of Kisner. Let's hope his phone rings with more offers for out of town trips as the opponent. No one wants to see him fight here. He makes BORING fights. And with the talented young pros around here who needs a pit a pat cruiser who runs and stinks out the joint. And lets hope he does not make tv on one of those fights. As soon as that happens, everyone will know what sort of a fighter he is and then no one will want him. TV will say hell no, and the out of town promoters will prefer to bring in real fighters who will stand in and fight the talent that they are trying to showcase.
And Kisner does not want to fight locally anyway because if he does he has to pay his manager, James Hogan. So Kisner prefers to be a bitch and lose out of town so he can rip off his manager. He represents the worst of our sport- a total low life with no character who bitches out every fight and puts the fans to sleep. Good riddance Kisner.

  9. stevenson, wade, harrison, russell are all undefeated. they all have something else in common. they have a good team behind them. two of them are making tons of money and the other two will be very soon. james hogan is about the smartest boxing managers around. the boxers who have him are very lucky to have someone like that on their side.

  10. I don't care what manager or promoter Kisner is wit past or present!!! He would've never made as a pro & not even as a elite amateur, because the elite amateurs fight without headgear... He don't have or never had anything on his punches & I don't care if he fought straw weight!!! So on that note, if he fight for another promotion or management company be happy, because he's not representing yours, when he lose!!!I don't care what manager or promoter Kisner is wit past or present!!!

  11. "alontez fox are doing it right."

If you mean by crushing bums..i dont know. He fought Frank Galarza which he got a draw..almost lost. And he fights Shah soon too. The kids taking hard fights..not "crushing bums"

  12. Kisner got robbed. A split dec in the guys hometown says it all. Alot of big time people I have talked to including people of warriors boxing Kisner outboxed wright. Kisner stepped up and did great. A lose on paper but a win in reality. This only helped him. It has shot him up in the rankings!!

  13. Damn yo was giving the win first then they take it from him. That's bad for boxing. It's obvious Kisner was robbed, he loses a split dec in the guys hometown, and that's after being the winner at first. No body has done was Kisner has down go out and fight a undefeated hometown fighter with nothing but knockouts. All I have heard is Kisner outboxed him. Close but Kisner won. I think if the fight was anywhere else besides Illinois Kisner would have got the win like he did at first and it would have stayed like that!!!
