Russell Wins Unanimous Decision in Vegas Despite Hand Injury!

Capitol Heights, MD featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. won a lopsided 10-round unanimous decision over Vyacheslav Gusev of Russia tonight at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Saturday night.  However, an old nemesis that Russell thought he put behind him may have cropped up again.

According to Fightnews.com, Russell may have injured his left hand at some point during the contest.  Russell has had hand issues in the past but told reporters during the week that those problems were resolved.  This doesn't seem to be the case.  The hand issue did not stop Russell from scoring a knockdown when Gusev's glove touched the canvas in the third.  Russell went on to win 100-89 on all three scorecards.

Russell is now 22-0, 13 KO's.  Gusev is 20-3, five KO's.

  1. Russell did very well but is lacking punching power. This may get better as he gets older.

  2. nope. Punching power = you either have it or you don't. There are techniques, etc. that can assist and help in your punching power, but you either have it or you don't.

  3. Russell has 13 knockouts and had scored KO's in his last three bouts. Remember, he hurt his hand.

  4. Russell may not have the hardest punch, but he is very sound and his defense is very good. He will be a champion by 2014.
