While the Washington Golden Gloves are going on here, many Beltway amateurs are also preparing for the USA Boxing National Championships which will take place March 30-April 6 at the Northern Quest Resort and Casino in Spokane, WA.
There will be boxers competing in five categories: Youth Men, Youth Women, Senior Men, Elite Men and Elite Women. Observers will be looking closely at the Elite Men's division not only because of the talent but also because they will compete WITHOUT headgear.
In a related story, headgear for the Elite Men's division has been eliminated across the board including the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan in October as well as the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. AIBA, the international governing body for amateur boxing, also announced recently that they will be eliminating the computerized punch count scoring system and moving to the 10-point must system like the pros.
