Recap From The Convention Center!

Here are the results from the Keystone Boxing card at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC:

DC welterweight Dusty Harrison remained undefeated with a third-round TKO over Nalo Leal of Spokane, WA.   Harrison dropped Leal with a right hand in the first round and continued his dominance until dropping Leal with another right hand over the top to finish the contest.  The bout was stopped at 31 seconds of the third.  Harrison is now 10-0, six KO's while Leal falls to 4-17-1.

New York, NY light heavyweight Phil Jackson-Benson stopped William "Bad News" Prieto of Lorain, OH at the end of the first round with a brutal body shot.  Prieto did not beat referee Sharon Sands's count and the bout was stopped.  Jackson-Benson, who is now trained by Adrian Davis, is now 9-1, eight KO's while Prieto is now 5-11, two KO's.

This card had three knockouts which will get serious consideration at the end of the year for Beltway Boxing Knockout of the Year.  Palmer Park, MD junior lightweight Kevin "K-Smoov" Rivers, Jr. scored a first-round knockout over Bobby "The Prodigy" Wooten of Wilson, NC in just 31 seconds with the only punch he threw in the bout.  Wooten came out of his corner and immediately held on to Rivers.  As Wooten had a grip on Rivers's left hand, Rivers crushed Wooten with his right hand and spent him sprawling.  Wooten couldn't beat the count.  Rivers is 2-0, one KO while Wooten is 0-2.

The second candidate may be middleweight "Swift" Jarrett Hurd of Accokeek, MD, who dropped Coy Lambert of Columbia, SC face first with a brutal straight left hand to end a very competitive bout at 2:08 of the fourth round. Hurd is now 2-0, two KO's while Lambert is 1-5, one KO.

The third candidate came from the debuting middleweight Devar Ferhadi of Frederick, MD who landed a brutal body shot to Anthony Madden of Biloxi, MS that made Madden scream in pain as he fell to the canvas.  The bout was stopped at 1:41 of the first round.  Madden is 0-2.

Also on the card, Clarksburg, MD junior middleweight Dillon "The Stalker" Hayman scored a first-round stoppage over Christopher Baynes of Reidsville, NC by way of Barbados.  Hayman never knocked Baynes down, but pressured him enough to get the bout stopped at 1:51 of the first round.  Hayman is now 2-0, two KO's while Baynes is 0-2.

District Heights, MD junior lightweight Renaldo "Misunderstood" Gaines bounced back from his loss to David Warren Huffman to score a four-round unanimous decision over Alan Beeman of Providence, RI in the only bout to go the distance on the card and one of the better bouts overall this year along the Beltway.  This was a great give-and-take bout despite the scorecards giving Gaines a shutout victory. 40-35.  Gaines scored a knockdown in round two.  Gaines is 3-1 while Beeman is 0-5.

The opening contest saw DC junior welterweight Joshua "Marvelous Moe" Parker deliver a third-round TKO over the debuting Antonio Moody of Reidsville, NC. Parker got the bout stopped at 1:55 of the third after some heavy shots to the head and body.  Parker is now 2-0, two KO's.

My thanks to Juan Marshall of ProAm Fight Talk for the photos for each post and the use of his laptop for the evening!

  1. How much money did Gene loss this time? Maybe if he works with other promoters in the area, he could turn a buck!

  2. The place was packed' don,t let them trick you. He made more off this fight than any other. Keystone is the top promoter on the east coast right now. They just keep getting bigger and bigger- fighters are knocking his door down to get on the card. It was standing room only and at the end of the night, nobody wanted to leave. I heard so many talking about the show on the train going home. Everyone was happy. The prices are great and its obvious that keystone cares about the people more than the money.

  3. I must agree the place was full and most of the fights were pretty good. This event will continue to grow with fights that were very exciting

  4. The crowd was late-arriving and turned out to be pretty packed! Many people were standing around but there were a few, not a lot, but a few empty seats by the end of the evening.

  5. The fights were great, the prices are terrific, the convention center is safe and the metro takes you right inside the building, i see friends that i've not seen in years, i meet all the former champions, i get pictures and autographs, i see the ring card girls and i go home and truly appreciate my girlfriend. She may be heavy and aged, but she looks like gold compared to them. Either way, i will be at the next show in december no matter what. Thank you keystone for a wonderful night.

  8. I agree with you all concerning a great event. I personally think all went well with the exception of the little ref Kenny stopping fights way too early. He seems to have the midget attitude of nobody is going to tell me what to do. I've seen this guy work before and he always seems to screw up. That's most likely why he is not permitted to work in Maryland or Virgina. Now he has possibly blown it im DC also. Couldn't help to notice as he walked through the crowd-everyone booed and said not so pleasant things directed towards him. Normally, I'd feel sorry for such a little guys as he, but he just seems to be one arrogant little bas%^&*. The fans, fighters, commision all seemed to think the same way. Anyway, hopefully, we will not see this turd again in the future.

  10. The place was packed, because they rented a room half the size of all the other fights!

  11. It's not the first time they have rented that hall. They've been there before and other promoters have used that hall in the past.

Also, their choices were somewhat limited because the "For Sisters Only" event was also taking place there. Convention staff were also setting up for the big event Sunday and Monday with a lot of the famous TV chefs.

  12. "the fights were great" and "the fights were pretty good"...Really? Doesn't sound like it when 4 of the 8 fights ended in 1st round KO/TKO the other 3 didn't make it out of the 3rd round, and the only one that went the distance was a 4 rounder. Makes me wonder what kind of shows you guys are comparing this to? Amateur shows??? I've seen Amateur shows better than what this sounds like.

  15. Uhh..no.

As far as the fights were concerned, they were actually competitive. The boxers that came into town did not come to lay down, they just aren't as talented.

Bobby Wooten who fought Kevin Rivers, Jr., apparently is better known as an MMA fighter and he used what looked like a MMA tactic by holding Rivers's arm. Rivers used a veteran move to hit Wooten while being held.

Devar Ferhadi's bout was very competitive. His opponent was hitting Ferhadi with some shots. Once Ferhadi started his offense, though, it was over. But that was a competitive round as well.

  16. Hey everyone won't be pleased with what happens during the fights. I certainly will go out on a limb and say if you polled everyone who was there on what they rather see a show like saturday nights or 8 unanimous decisions.

I would think easily 95% would want to see what they saw Saturday night.
