Temple Hills, MD's D'Mitrius Ballard continues his memorable 2012 by capturing the 178-pound Open title at the National PAL Boxing Tournament at the Seagate Centre in Toledo, Ohio Saturday night. Ballard won a 26-19 decision over Steven Nelson of Fort Walton Beach, FL. Ballard adds the PAL title to the National Golden Gloves championship he won earlier this year. This is also Ballard's fourth consecutive open PAL Championship.
In the Female Open 165-pound championship, Baltimore's Franchon Crews lost a 30-19 decision to Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields of Flint, MI. Also, Tiara Brown, who trains in DC at the Headbangers Gym but is from Lehigh Acres, FL, won the 125-pound female Open title with a close 23-22 decision over Virginia Fuchs of Kemah, TX.
Beltway Boxers won three more Junior Division titles on Saturday, bringing the overall total to six for the tournament. Malik Hawkins of Baltimore won the 154-pound title with a 15-9 decision over Alexis Rocha of Santa Ana, CA. Jason Bell of District Heights, MD scored a 22-9 decision over Javonte Bell of Gary, IN to win the 165-pound title and Calvin Countess of Abingdon, MD won the 201-pound title by walkover. Countess won the Junior Olympics title in this weight class earlier this year.
