Beltway Boxers will be involved in some high profile contests in the next couple of months as we head towards the summer. Here's a brief look at what is scheduled.
Silver Spring, MD light heavyweight George "El Gallo" Armenta (14-8, 11 KO's) will take on undefeated Dennis "The Assassin" Hasson (13-0, five KO's) of Philadelphia, PA on Friday, June 1 at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. The bout is slated for eight rounds.
As BATB mentioned a while back, Bedford, VA super middleweight Scott "Cujo" Sigmon (22-3, 12 KO's) makes his national television debut when he faces former world champion Kelly Pavlik (38-2, 33 KO's) of Youngstown, OH on Friday, June 8 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. This is a scheduled 10-round contest that will televised by ESPN2.
On Friday, June 13, DC super middleweight Gary "Fast Hands" Jones (22-2, eight KO's) returns to action in an eight-round bout against Richard Pierson of Paterson, NJ (11-2, eight KO's) at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ. Jones is the older brother of the Russell Brothers.
Three days later -- Saturday, June 16 -- in Newark, NJ, two locally-based boxers will be involved in a card at the Prudential Center. Cambridge, MD junior welterweight Dontre "Pound for Pound" King (6-10-2, two KO's) will face Jose Peralta Alejo of Jersey City, NJ (8-1, four KO's) in a six-round contest. Also, Virginia-based middleweight John "No Mercy" Mackey (13-6-3, six KO's) will be in a six-round contest against undefeated John "Apollo Kidd" Thompson of Newark (8-0, three KO's).
Also on Saturday, June 16 , there will be a Keystone Boxing card at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD. Scheduled to appear on the card so far are undefeated boxers Venroy "Hard Work" July, James "Keep 'Em Sleepin' Stevenson, Renaldo "Misunderstood" Gaines, Harold "Sweet Lee" Parker and Kevin "The Scarecrow" Womack, Jr. along with debuting Jeremy Trussell and Brady Sensibaugh of Baltimore. We'll have more on this card as the news comes in.
On Saturday, June 30, "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. will be in a bout at the Fantasy Sports Casino in Indio, CA. The bout is scheduled to be a 12-round encounter. No word yet on the opponent. This is a Golden Boy Promotions card that was originally slated to be in DC, however Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer recently stated publicly that Golden Boy will never come back to DC again.
Friday, July 6 marks another appearance at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for a Beltway Boxer. This time it will be DC heavyweight Maurice "Freight Train" Byarm (13-1-1, nine KO's) will take on undefeated Magomed Abdusalamov of Oxnard, CA (14-0, 14 KO's) for the vacant WBC USNBC Silver Heavyweight title. This bout will be a co-feature contest shown on ESPN2.
Saturday, July 7 is the date of Tony Thompson's rematch against world heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko in Bern, Switzerland. The bout will be shown on EPIX.
