Lem Satterfield of RingTV.com is reporting that undefeated Capitol Heights, MD featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. will return to action on Saturday, April 21 when he faces veteran Dat "Be Dat" Nguyen in a 10-round contest in El Paso, Texas. The bout is slated to be part of a Showtime telecast featuring former IBF Bantamweight champ Abner Mares moving up in weight to challenge former world champ Eric Morel.
We say hopefully because this bout has been scheduled two other times -- once Nguyen injured himself and then it was rescheduled for February 11 on the Andre Berto-Victor Ortiz undercard but Berto suffered an injury.
If Russell does make the Showtime telecast, that means it will be back-to-back Beltway Boxers on premium cable television -- Russell on April 21 and Seth Mitchell on April 28th on HBO against Chazz Witherspoon in Atlantic City, NJ.
easy fight for Gary
ReplyDeleteNuttins easy in TX! TX is the capital of upsets and horrible judges...we'll see what happens. But I agree that Nguyen is not the rising contender that he once was, only fighting once in the last 2 1/2 years, and that was a loss. Not a threatening fight, but like I said, expect the unexpected when in TX.
ReplyDeleteGary is fighting April 20th in biloxi, Mississippi on the jermain Taylor undercard. Not this card!!!
ReplyDeletethanks for the update. Same opponent?
ReplyDeleteThe bout was originally slated for Texas, according to Russell himself when I talked to him two weeks ago. This changed happened very recently.
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know.
