While at the Golden Gloves finals tonight at the Waldorf Jaycees, I saw these three men sitting together. These three men along with people like
Adrian Davis,
Juice Gatling and others, set the standard for training some of our greatest Beltway Boxers and also some of the great trainers that have followed behind them. When I saw them sitting together, I knew I had to have a photo of them.
From left to right --
Junious Hinton (Books and Boxing),
Eugene Hughes (Midtown Youth Academy) and
Dave Jacobs (a former trainer of Sugar Ray Leonard and others) Indeed, they are true legends!
Nice job Gary - It was great seeing you and the boxing family!
ReplyDeleteWhy is Juice even mentioned in this article that speaks of legends? Juice may be a legend in the "con" category but thats about it.
ReplyDeleteBecause Juice has been a fixture in the boxing community and once trained Andrew Maynard as an amateur. Maynard went on to win the gold medal in the 1988 Olympics!
ReplyDeleteJuice couldn't train a trained dog to sit down, let alone an amateur boxer to win a gold medal.
ReplyDeleteActually, Juice was one of Ray Leonard's best friends and still is to this day. It was Juice who guided Ray to the 1976 Olympics. Then over a decade later, he did the same for Andrew Maynard and has also remained his friend ever since. Juice has put more time into amateur boxing then any other coach in the DMV. I am on no way a Juice fan, but the truth is, he has done more for boxing than all three in the picture put together.
ReplyDeleteHe will pit a fighter with three fights with a fighter with 250 fights. And these were kids.Don't tell me this guy is a legend.
ReplyDeleteHe is a legend in his own mind
and obviously yours.
Lol!!! Leave Juice alone he's a good dude at heart.
