Guerrero Added to December 10 DC Card!

Salisbury, MD middleweight Fernando Guerrero has been added to the December 10th "Capital Showdown" card at the Washington Convention Center.

Guerrero (21-1, 16 KO's) will be trying to bounce back from his first pro loss -- a fourth-round TKO loss to Grady Brewer on June 17 in Austin, TX -- when he faces Robert Kliewer of Maplewood, MN in an eight-round contest. Kliewer (11-13-2, five KO's) has lost five of his last six including losses to Dominic Wade, Ronald Hearns, Shawn Porter and Daniel Jacobs.

Undercard Details For December 10 at Washington Convention Center!

We are starting to get details on the undercard for the "Capital Showdown" card at the Washington Convention Center on Saturday, December 10.

DC lightweight Anthony Peterson (30-1, 20 KO's) is slated to be in a 10-round contest against Sergio "Pollero" Rivera of Mexico (25-8-2, 16 KO's). This will be Peterson's first bout since his seventh-round disqualification loss to Brandon Rios on September 11, 2010 in Las Vegas, NV. Rivera has lost three straight including an eight-round unanimous decision to Tim Coleman on April 29 in Las Vegas.

DC welterweight Dusty Harrison (2-0) has an opponent in fellow DC boxer Terrell Davis (0-4) who will be looking for his first win and has not fought since being stopped by Jermall Challo at the Washington Convention Center in June of 2009.

Also on the card will be White Plains, MD junior welterweight Terron "The Kid" Grant (1-0) who will face the debuting Dashawn Autry.

Undefeated Fort Washington, MD light heavyweight Thomas "Top Dog" Williams, Jr. (5-0, three KO's) has also been added to the card in a scheduled four-round contest.

Nicklow-Taylor Bout Lands in California December 30!

The bout between Baltimore middleweight Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow and former unified middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor now has a venue. The bout will be held on Friday, December 30 at the Morongo Casino Resort in Cabazon, CA.

The 10-round bout will headline a ShoBox telecast on Showtime on that evening.

Russell Jr. Scores First-Round Knockout in Cincinnati!

Capitol Heights, MD featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell Jr. scored a devastating first-round knockout over Heriberto Ruiz tonight at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, OH. According to Fightnews.com, early in the round, Russell caught Ruiz against the ropes and stunned him with a right hook and as Ruiz attempted to work up from the body to Russell’s head, Russell fired a whistling right hook to Ruiz’ jaw, turning out the lights. The bout was stopped at 2:12 of the first.

Russell remains undefeated at 19-0, 11 KO's and is ranked number 10 by the WBA. Ruiz is now 48-12-2, 30 KO's.

Irene Pultz, Mother of Former WBO Champion, Passes!

BATB sends deepest condolences to the family of Irene Pultz who passed away on November 23 at the age of 76. Irene Pultz is the mother of former WBO Cruiserweight champion and Beltway legend Boone Pultz, Mrs. Pultz is also survived by Alan Pultz, Linda Pultz and Jennifer Solomon along with 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 27 at Taylor Funeral Home in Annapolis. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Chesapeake.

Russell Jr. Weighs 127 for Cincinnati Clash!

Gary Russell, Jr. weighed in at 127 for his 10-round contest with Heriberto Ruiz tomorrow night at US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, OH. Ruiz tipped the scale at 126 1/2.

Highlights of the contest will be shown during tomorrow night's HBO Boxing telecast.

Andrews Weighs 139 For Pittsburgh Bout!

Staunton, VA junior welterweight Richie Andrews weighed in at 139 pounds for his bout tonight in Pittsburgh, PA. Andrews is 2-0-2. His opponent, Justin Johnson, is 2-2-2 and weighed in at 138 1/2 pounds.

Services for Jakari Butler Announced!

The services for Jakari Butler will take place on Saturday, November 26 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 4275 Fourth Street, SE in DC.

The viewing is at 10 AM.

As some of you have posted in the comments, there has been an arrest made in this tragic case. Police have arrested 35-year-old Michael Douglas Nealy. He is in jail without bond.

The Peterson Brothers and 'Mayhem' Mitchell Help During Holiday Season!

Throughout this week, The Peterson Brothers and Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell will be very visible during the holiday season. Earlier today, The Petersons gave away turkeys and later in the week, they will volunteer at Martha's Table in Northwest DC.

On Thanksgiving, the Petersons will be serving the less fortunate at the Central Union Mission in DC.

Meanwhile, Mitchell will join DC Mayor Vincent Gray and US Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton during the Safeway Feast For Sharing on Thanksgiving Eve.

Amateur Boxer Butler Killed in Oxon Hill!

BATB sends condolences to the family of Jakari Butler. Butler was stabbed this past Friday night in Oxon Hill, MD. According to WJLA-TV, No one was in custody and no other information was immediately available.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit at (301) 772-4925.

Butler was a boxer at Old School Boxing Gym at Fort Washington, MD. As soon as we get information on his services, we will pass it along.

Jargal Loses By Decision in New York; King Wins Decision in New Jersey!

This past Saturday two Beltway Boxers split in road bouts in the New York-New Jersey area.

Junior welterweight "The Mongolian Mongoose" Bayan Jargal of Arlington, VA lost a 10-round unanimous decision to undefeated Chris Algeri of Huntington, NY at the Paramount Theater on Long Island, NY. Algeri won the bout by scores of 97-93 (twice) and 98-92. Jargal has a record of 15-3, 10 KO's and is winless in his last four. Jargal has lost his last three bouts to boxers with a combined record of 56-3-1. Algeri is now 12-0, six KO's.

In Atlantic City, NJ, Cambridge, MD junior welterweight Dontre King won a four-round unanimous decision over Julio DeJesus of Millsville, NJ at Bally's Hotel and Casino. King won the bout 39-37 on all three scorecards. The win is King's third straight and fourth in his last five bouts. King is now 6-9-2, two KO's while DeJesus falls to 5-3-1, three KO's.

Suitland, MD cruiserweight Venroy "Hard Work" July scored a first-round knockout over Jason "The Mason" Pauley of Chesapeake, WVA. The knockout came at 2:29 of the round. July is now 9-0-2, three KO's. Pauley falls to 5-6, one KO.

Debuting Norfolk, VA heavyweight Dennis Benson knocked out Springdale, MD's Abodurin "Big Bo" Akinyanju at 2:36 of the third round. Despite a 50-pound weight disadvantage (243-293), Benson was able to push Akinyanju around the ring until he separated long enough to land a devastating right-left combination. Akinyanju tried to get up but couldn't. Akinyanju is now 4-2, three KO's.


Lenwood "Mr. Composure" Dozier of Glen Burnie, MD scored a second-round KO over Laurel, MD welterweight Norman "The Shadow" Allen Dozier dropped Allen in the first and finished him with a nice combo at 1:25 of the second. Dozier bounces back from his TKO loss to Emmanuel Taylor and is now 7-3-1, three KO's. Allen has now lost five in a row and evens his record to 6-6, three KO's.

Columbia, MD middleweight Tony "Mo Better" Jeter won a four-round unanimous decision over Suitland, MD-based Ken Dunham. Two judges scored the bout 40-36 while one had it 39-37. Jeter is now 12-2-1, nine KO's. Dunham falls to 6-13-1, four KO's.

Baltimore, MD middleweight Omar "The Machine" Sims won a four-round majority decision over Columbia's Barry Trotter. Two judges scored the bout 39-37 for Sims and one judge scored it even at 38-38. Sims is 6-4-3, three KO's. Trotter loses for the first time as a pro and is 2-1, one KO.

The pro portion of the card got off to an ominous beginning as Baltimore junior welterweight Kevin "The Scarecrow" Womack, Jr. scored perhaps the Beltway Knockout of 2011 with a fourth-round knockout of Benjamin Olinga of DC. Womack hit the shorter Olinga with a brutal right uppercut that put Olinga on the canvas for several moments. Olinga was conscious and alert as he was taken from the ring on a stretcher. Olinga went to a nearby hospital for observation and a CAT scan.

In amateur bouts on the card. Steven Clark of Sugar Ray Leonard Gym scored an RSC-3 over Montez Williams of Diamonds N' The Ruff at 115 pounds. At 178 pounds, Ed Lay of Langdon Recreation Center won a decision over Greg Berger of Tony's Boxing Club.

Also at 178, Gregory Newby of Limelite won over Antwan Ward of Sugar Ray Leonard. At 165 pounds, National PAL champion D'Mitrius Ballard of No Xcuse won over Lonnie Hayes of LA Boxing.

Keystone Boxing promoted the card. The matchmakers of the pro portion were Josh Hall and Raymond Jackson. The matchmaker for the amateur portion was Julius "Juice" Gatling.

However, the puzzle was why was the lighter boxer (Benson) able to push Akinyanju around the ring? Benson separated from Bo just enough to land the KO combo.

In a stunner, debuting Dennis Benson scored a crushing third-round knockout over Bo Akinyanju. This was a shocker because Bo was doing some good things.

Co-feature: Heavies Bo Akinyanju vs the debuting Dennis Benson of Richmond, VA. Four rounds.

Allen's record evens at 6-6, three KO's.

Time of knockout 1:25 of the second. Good bounce-back win for Dozier who was stopped in his last outing. Dozier now 7-3-1, three KO's.

Dozier with an impressive second-round TKO over Allen. Dozier dropped Allen with a great right hand in the first then landed a solid combo to finish it!

Norman Allen-Lenwood Dozier coming to the ring scheduled for six rounds!

Jeter is now 12-2-1, nine KO's. Dunham is 6-13-1, four KO's.

Dunham had some opportunities but they closed quickly. Jeter wins four-round unanimous decision. Two judges scored 40-36, one has it 39-37.

Jeter and Dunham give us another phone booth bout. Jeter fought mostly on the inside. Landed some nice body shots but also some body shots went south.

Tony Jeter-Ken Dunham coming to the ring. Now a four-rounder.

Sims wins a four-round majority decision over Trotter. Two judges call it 39-37, one calls it even. Sims now 6-4-3, three KO's. Trotter is 2-1, one KO.

Nice close bout between Trotter and Sims! Trotter made it a phone booth bout. Sims had trouble keeping Trotter off but adjusted well later on.

Action resumes with an interesting matchup -- Omar Sims vs. Barry Trotter at middleweight.

Olinga heading to hospital, probably to Southern Hospital, which is the closest to this area. Womack now 2-0, one KO. Olinga 0-2.

They have put a neck brace on Olinga and will put him on a stretcher just as a precaution. He's conscious and talking to docs and EMTs, who did a great job!

Olinga now up to a sitting position on a stool. Pretty even fight between the taller Womack and shorter Olinga. May be our knockout of the year!

Kevin Womack ends the bout with a crushing right uppercut to knock out Benjamin Olinga at 50 seconds of the fourth round. Olinga is still down on the canvas.

Referee for this contest is Brent Bovell who will be heading to the Ukraine next week as a referee for an international event. Bovell is Olympic eligible.

Khan-Peterson Week Gets More Interesting; IBHOF Announcement Scheduled for Dec. 6!

With all the hoopla that will come in the final week before the championship battle between Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson at the Washington Convention Center, there will also be a big announcement that many Beltway Boxing Fans will be waiting for.

The announcement of the newest class of inductees for the International Boxing Hall of Fame is slated to come on Tuesday, December 6 -- just four days before the Khan-Peterson bout. As we've already said, three-time world champion and the Ring's magazine's choice for best flyweight of the 90's, DC's own Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson is on the ballot for the very first time. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Johnson were to get his Hall call the very week of one of the biggest boxing cards in recent Beltway Boxing history? We'll see what happens!!

Pro-Am Boxing Returns to Show Place Arena November 19!

There will be a boxing card coming to the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD this Saturday, November 19. Keystone Boxing is promoting a pro-am card and bringing back the "In Yo' Face at Showplace" series.

Headlining the pro section will be undefeated Suitland, MD cruiserweight Venroy "Hard Work" July who will face Jason "The Mason" Pauley of Cabin Creek, WVA in a six-round contest. July (8-0-2, two KO's) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision win over Willie Chisolm on August 19 in Baltimore, MD. Pauley (5-5, one KO) has lost his last five after winning his first five.

The co-feature will be a four-round heavyweight contest as Abodurin "Big Bo" Akinyanju of Landover, MD takes on Derek Benson of Richmond, VA. Akinyanju (4-1, three KO's) bounced back from his first pro loss by winning a four-round split decision over Ron Gamble on March 12 in Fairfax, VA. BATB cannot find a record on Benson.

In what should be an interesting all-Beltway, six-round welterweight battle, Glen Burnie, MD's Lenwood "Mr. Composure" Dozier takes on Norman "The Shadow" Allen of Laurel, MD. Both guys could use a win -- Dozier (6-3-1, two KO's) has lost three of his last four while Allen (6-5, three KO's) has a four-bout losing streak.

Columbia, MD middleweight Tony "Mo Better" Jeter is a late addition to the card. Jeter (11-2-1, nine KO's) will face Charlotte, NC's Ken Dunham (6-12-1, four KO's) in another six-round contest. Jeter last fought on March 12 in Fairfax and won a six-round unanimous decision over Mike McFail Dunham has not fought since suffering a third-round TKO against Matt Korobov in December of 2009. Dunham has fought a number of bouts against Beltway Boxers including two against Lenwood Dozier (a win and a loss), two against James Stevenson (two knockout losses) and one against Omar Sims (a draw).

Speaking of Sims, "The Machine" from Baltimore will take on Columbia, MD's Barry Trotter in a four-round middleweight battle. Sims (5-4-3, three KO's) has lost two straight and has yet to win a six-round contest. Trotter (2-0, one KO) has not fought since September of 2009.

Also on the card, Baltimore rookie junior welterweight Kevin "The Scarecrow" Womack, Jr. (1-0) takes on DC's Benjamin Olinga (0-1) in a four-round contest.

DC heavyweight Kaelan Hollon won her pro debut with a four-round unanimous decision over Yolanda Bellamy of Raleigh, NC. Hollon won by shutout (40-36) on all three judges cards (David Jordan, Lloyd Scaife and Tammye Jenkins). Bellamy was also making her pro debut.

Temple Hills, MD cruiserweight Zakki Scott had a very short pro debut with a TKO at 1:18 of the first round over Judidas Williams of Wilson, NC. Williams was making his pro debut.

Brooklyn, NY middleweight Dushane Crooks scored a first-round TKO needing just 51 seconds to stop Michael Taylor of Wilson, NC. Crooks is now 5-0, four KO's while Taylor is 0-5.

Baltimore welterweight Emmanuel "Tranzformer" Taylor lost an eight-round split decision to Prenice Brewer of Cleveland, OH in the main event of Fight Night 2011 at The Washington Hilton and Towers hotel in DC.

Judges Mark D'Antillo and Wayne Smith scored the bout for Brewer, 77-75 and 78-74 respectively for Brewer. Judge Steve Rados saw the contest for Taylor 77-75 as did BATB

The loss was Taylor's first in his first eight-round contest. Taylor is now 14-1, 10 KO's. Brewer is now 16-1-1, six KO's.

The second bout saw Jerren "Hard Knock" Cochran of Alexandria, VA win a dominant four-round unanimous decision over Jason Rorie of Winston-Salem, NC. Cochran went a full four rounds for the first time in his young pro career and is now 4-0, three KO's. Rorie falls to 6-14-2, three KO's.

RD 6 -- Both men now bleeding from the nose. Brewer giving up ground as Taylor continues to come forward. No significant damage. Taylor, 10-9.

RD 5 -- Pace has slowed down in the bout -- benefitting Taylor. Brewer looks tired at this point as Taylor really begins to land body shots. Taylor 10-9.

RD 4 -- Taylor landing more combos and is starting to walk Brewer down. Brewer not as busy as Taylor landed some vicious left hooks and uppercuts. Taylor 10-9.

RD 3 -- Taylor bleeding from nose. Brewer controlling action in the ring with good movement and combos. Brewer, 10-9.

Round 2 -- Brewer busier in this round, throwing sharper combos. Although Taylor catches most on gloves, Brewer is more active. 10-9 Brewer.

Round one -- feeling out process. Both men landed measured shots. Taylor hit Brewer with big uppercut late in round. 10-9 Taylor.

The main event is now -- Emmanuel Taylor vs. Prenice Brewer. Scheduled for eight!

Jargal (15-2-3, 10 KO's) is coming off a tough 10-round unanimous decision loss against Bredis Prescott on April 22 in Uncasville, CT. Jargal will be trying to break a two-bout losing streak. Algieri (11-0, six KO's) defeated Julius Edmonds by fourth-round TKO on March 17 at Franklin Square, NY.

The bout will be televised as part of the "Boxeo Azteca" series on the Azteca America channel.

Beltway Pros Support Breast Cancer Boxing Card at Du Burns November 11!

A number of Beltway pros will be attending the "Boxing for Boobs" charity amateur boxing card on Friday, November 11 at DuBurns Arena in Baltimore.

Rising stars Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell, Maurice "Freight Train" Byarm, Dusty Harrison, Steve "Show Stealer" Wheeler and Fernando and Alex Guerrero are all slated to make appearances at the card.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the American Breast Cancer Association. The card is being promoted by Baltimore Boxing in association with Chris Nissley. The first bout is slated to begin at 8 PM.

'Mr.' Russell in 'New Faces' Section of The Ring!

Undefeated Capitol Heights, MD featherweight and 2008 Olympian "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. is featured in the "New Faces" section of the December 2011 issue "The Bible of Boxing," The Ring.

Russell talks about his past, including the death of his older brother Devaun Drayton and how that and other parts of his past motivate him today.

Just as an aside -- Ring has gone through a lot of stylistic changes, many of those are displayed with this issue.

'Smokin' Joe Frazier Passes at 67!

Truly one of my personal favorite fighters (in and out of the ring) has passed today. We hear official word that the one and only "Smokin'" Joe Frazier died of liver cancer at the age of 67.

We know a lot of the stats of Frazier the fighter -- the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo in 1964, his three tremendous bouts against Muhammad Ali and so much more. He was one of the very, very best.

It's very sad that Mr. Frazier will not make his usual trip to DC for Fight Night this week so he can be revered by his fans. My deepest condolences to his son Marvis and daughter Jacqui.

This is not the best obit I can write, but quite frankly, how do you top what has already been said?

'Tranzformer' Taylor Faces Brewer At Fight Night November 10!

Undefeated Baltimore welterweight Emmanuel "Tranzformer" Taylor will face possibly his toughest opponent of his young career on Thursday, November 10 when he battles Prenice Brewer of Cleveland, OH at the Fight Night Fight For Children event at the Washington Hilton and Towers in DC. The bout is scheduled for eight rounds.

Taylor (14-0, 10 KO's) is coming off a third-round TKO win over Lenwood Dozier on August 19 at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore. Brewer (15-1-1, six KO's) has not fought since suffering his first pro loss -- a third-round TKO to Patrick Lopez on August 6, 2010 in Chicago.

Also slated to be on the card is undefeated Alexandria, VA-based featherweight Jerren "Hard Knock" Cochran who will face veteran Jason Rorie of Winston-Salem, NC in a four-round contest. Cochran (3-0, three KO's) has yet to let an opponent get out of the first round. That includes a first-round knockout over Desi Williams on July 16 at DC Star in DC. Rorie (6-13-2, three KO's) lost by third-round knockout to Javier Gallo on November 9 in Woodland Hills, CA.

In another four-rounder Jacey Thompson (1-0, one KO) of DC will battle Corey Preston of Cincinnati, OH by way of North Carolina (1-7, one KO) in a middleweight bout.

Rivera Loses Unanimous Decision in Puerto Rico!

George "Wartime" Rivera lost a 10-round unanimous decision to former WBA Super Middleweight champion Manny Siaca Friday night in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico.

The scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91. Rivera is now 13-7, four KO's. Siaca's record rises to 24-7, 20 KO's and he wins the WBA Fedecaribe Middleweight title.

"The Berlin Bomber" Joshua Snyder of Berlin, MD won a tough eight-round split decision over Baltimore's Maxell "The General" Taylor. Great close fight, both in the ring and on the scorecards. The bout was fought mostly phone-booth style until Snyder was able to put Taylor on his bicycle in the seventh round. Judges Don Risher and Dave Greer saw the bout 77-75 for Snyder while Gary Camponeschi gave Taylor the nod, 77-75.

Snyder is now 9-6-1, three KO's while Taylor falls to 17-4-1, eight KO's.

Forestville, MD junior middleweight Alantez "Tez" Fox remained undefeated with a four-round unanimous decision over Corey Preston of Cincinnati, OH. Fox won on all three scorecards, 40-36 to raise his record to 6-0, three KO's. Preston is 1-6.

The walkout bout saw junior welter Richard Andrews of Staunton, VA win a four-round unanimous decision over Baltimore's Mischa "The Assassin" Christensen. Andrews, who just fought and won this past Saturday in Winchester, VA, was dominant with his body shots that at times made Christensen do a boxer's version of "Riverdance" with his legs.

Andrews remains undefeated at 2-0-2, one KO. Christensen falls to 3-2, one KO.

In a women's bout, Leesburg, VA heavyweight Monique Lacy lost her pro debut to Kasondra Hardnett of Akron, OH via four-round unanimous decision. Hardnett's reach and height were too much for the shorter Lacy. Hardnett captured her first pro victory. She is now 1-3.

Also, Rolando "Iron Man" Chinea of Lancaster, PA won his pro debut with a first-round TKO of Chanele Buckhanon of Dayton, OH. The bout was stopped by referee Kenny Chevalier at 2:58 of the first. Buckhanon is now 0-2.

The weigh-in took place earlier today. Rivera weighed in at 157 and Siaca tipped the scales at 160.
