Former Undisputed World Heavyweight champion Hasim "The Rock" Rahman will be inducted into the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame later this year.
Rahman, who is still an active boxer (50-7-2, 41 KO's), pulled off one of the great upsets in recent boxing history when he knocked out Lennox Lewis in the fifth round on April 22, 2001 in Gauteng, South Africa to win the undisputed title. The Baltimore-born boxer would later win a WBC title in August of 2005.
Rahman is part of an exceptional class of 2011 for the Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame. Joining Rahman will be:
Former NBA star and Dunbar of Baltimore high school legend Sam Cassell (who is currently an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards)
Baltimore native and former Towson State University, NFL and USFL punter Sean Landeta
Former major league pitcher and Baltimore native Geoff Zahn
Pro golfer and University of Maryland graduate Fred Funk
X Games gold medalist and Annapolis native Travis Pastrana
Former University of Maryland women's basketball point guard and US Olympian Tara Heiss, who is also an inductee in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremonies will take place on Thursday, November 10th at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD. For ticket information, call 443-956-0678.
