There is talk that DC heavyweight contender Tony "The Tiger" Thompson will be facing "Fast" Eddie Chambers of Philadelphia, PA in an IBF Heavyweight elimination bout sometime in August.
Most folks in the boxing world would probably frown on this situation because the winner would, of course, get Wladimir Klitschko -- who has fought and stopped both men in previous bouts. Thompson in the 11th round in 2008 and Chambers brutally in the 12th round in 2009.
From the Thompson standpoint, this might be an interesting situation for two reasons:
1. Thompson held his own with Klitschko during the early stages of the bout and many people (myself included) believe that only a torn meniscus kept Thompson from making that bout very competitive.
2. Since that bout, Thompson has sparred with both Klitschkos and probably picked up some extra tips.
As far as the actual bout between Thompson (36-2, 24 KO's) and Chambers (36-2, 18 KO's). Thompson has won five straight bouts by knockout since the loss to Klitschko, including a third-round stoppage of Maurice Harris on May 27 in Reno, NV. Chambers, however, has only fought once since his loss to Klitschko and that was a 12-round unanimous decision loss to Derric Rossy on February 11 in Atlantic City, NJ.
If this bout is finalized, we will let you know.
Bummer. I like both of these guys and would love to see them both excel. Alas, that's the name of the game. Not everyone can be champ.
ReplyDeleteStill, if this fight happens I'm going to root for Tony the Tiger because he's local and because he's made for some exciting fights.
