The Beltway has a new world champion! Ashburn, VA's Tori Nelson has captured the vacant WBC Female Middleweight title with a 10-round split decision over Lorissa Rivas at the Jean Pierre Coliseum in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago!
According to the Trinidad Guardian newspaper, Nelson won the bout 97-93 and 96-94 on two of the judges's scorecards while Rivas took one card, 97-93. A correspondent for the Women's Boxing website WBAN said Nelson took the fight to Rivas in a "Joe Frazier" style and gave her all throughout the bout. Considering Rivas (who was born in the US but has Trinidadian citizenship),had fought her last four bouts in Trinidad, Nelson had to have done a lot to win the title in Rivas's backyard. By the way, Rivas told local papers in Trinidad that she would knock out Nelson in two rounds.
So, after only five pro bouts, Tori Nelson (4-0-1) is now a world champion! Rivas's record falls to 4-2, three KO's. By the way, Nelson is the third female world champion the Beltway has had in the last 10 years, following in the footsteps of DC Boxing Hall of Famer "The Raging Beauty" Isra Girgrah Wynn and Lisa "Too Fierce" Foster Cohen.
