Salisbury, MD middleweight Fernando Guerrero captured the vacant NABF Middleweight title with a hard-fought, 10-round unanimous decision over a very game Ishe "Sugar Shay" Smith of Las Vegas, NV tonight at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, MS.
Both men gave a clinic on how to go to the body throughout the contest, but a few of Smith's body shots went below Guerrero's belt and referee Randy Phillips took a point away from Smith in the sixth round.
Smith did manage to drop Guerrero in the eighth round, but that was not enough to sway the judges scorecards, who saw the bout for Guerrero at 96-93, 95-93 and an unbelievable 97-91.
Guerrero remains undefeated at 19-0, 15 KO's while Smith falls to 21-5, nine KO's.
I have to give this opinion. NO commission should EVER let one referee work an entire card, especially a nationally televised card. Referee Phillips worked 28 rounds of boxing on TV alone and worked the entire undercard. That should never happen. You could hear it in his voice by the time of the main event. Phillips was tired. It is just plain bush league and the Association of Boxing Commissioners needs to look into stopping that from ever happening again.
FERNANDO DID NOT WIN THAT FIGHT
ReplyDeleteWHY DOES SOMEONE NEED SUNGLASSES
INDOORS AT NIGHT?
I agree Gary. I knew that by main even he wasn't going to have energy at all to do much of anything. i knew he was beat when he stopped the fight to tell the promoter in the crowd to "stop cussin" or he'll stop the fight. terrible.
ReplyDeleteCongrts to Fernando and Hal and the rest of the team.
guerro, won no if and an but's about it great job coach kenny, upton boxing....
ReplyDeleteFernando won the fight clearly I guess the person who made the sunglass comment must of had dark sun glasses on with his eyes closed. Gary I agree with you I have never seen one ref do the entire fight card. It should of never happened. Smith should have had more than one point taken away for low blows.
ReplyDeleteCONGRATS TO FERNANDO AND HIS TEAM GREAT JOB
ReplyDeletei thought ishe did enough for the win but no way was he going to get a decision! that would be as impossible as that piece of shit dave holland keeping his job!
ReplyDeletethat ref was pretty bad, watching him stumble around the ring and make strange calls and give waaay too many warnings! he was a detriment to the fight, it reminded me of how a bad official can really affect the game, like the lame commissioner we have here in virginia (dave holland)
ReplyDeletehopefully that horrible ref and dave holland will retire together, or more likely both of them get fired!
good job keep doing your thing
ReplyDeleteDamont
The ref was definetly tired, he was ready to oput everyone else in timeout...i never heard of a fight stopped for cussing.......really the ref. needed a time out.!@!!!! That was too many rounds for anyone ref... the promoter could have paid for more refs....Good Win Fernando....but the judges were blind! it was closer than 97-91.....They dont have to make it look that easy.... Fernando worked hard, but the judges made it look as if all he had to do was showup.....
ReplyDeletethe ref was the absolute worse he was literally right next to the fighters as they were fighting
ReplyDeleteThe sun comes up, the sun goes down, and Dave Holland's name is brought up no matter what the subject. Pastor Scott, help!
ReplyDeletehow about bring in a witch doctor,
ReplyDeletesuperstition never helps anything!
pastor scott, give me a break, probably the pastor of the church of devine profits! religeon is a scam! just another way to seperate you from your money! just ask my pal jimmy swaggert! southern preachers are usually world class scammers!!may as well confess to bernie madoff!mass gives me gas!
Randy Phillips is literally the only boxing referee Mississippi has...
ReplyDeleteIt was good to see Jackie Kallen and another one of her fighters getting a big win on the undercard.
ReplyDeleteI have seen referees work entire cards, but never on a televised cards and never on a card that meant so much to young prospects. Also, if Phillips in the state's only referee, then you bring people from out of town. Steve Smoger, who is from New Jersey, has worked bouts in Maryland before. When Mike Tyson fought a non-title bout in DC against Kevin McBride, a bout that could have been handled by a local ref, Joe Cortez, from Nevada, ended up being the referee. Something along those lines should have been done!
ReplyDeletehal an promoter/need 2 with referee be arrested....
ReplyDeleteFernando landed his share of low blows also.
ReplyDeleteGuerrero DID win, but it was a lot closer than what 2 of the judges scored it....
ReplyDeleteLMAO @ the ones who saying the ref was "fatigued"... How exactly does a ref get "fatigued"??... They aren't supposed to be doing a lot... Dude was just horrible.. Not "fatigued".. Just horrible.. Wouldn't allow any action (especially when they tried to fight in tight quarters or out of a clinch)...
A referee gets fatigued if the ref has to do a lot, which Phillips had to do in those three TV bouts. And we don't know how tough the off-tv bouts were.
ReplyDeleteSome fights are more difficult than others. If the ref has to do, for example, six or seven bouts in a night, that can be very tiring mentally as well as physically.
I will allow people to blame it on his weight (like the poster above me did), but I will not allow people to blame it on the referees job being hard.... I train at the gym for 3-4 hours straight and this bastard couldn't officiate a fight which, if you do it correctly, you really ain't doing shit?
ReplyDeleteHe was just extremely out of shape...
Great job Fernando, I dont know what some of these people are talking about. Fernando clearly won that fight, the score's were maybe off, but all three judges had Fernando winning. Smith came on late but a lot of his shots were hitting the gloves and elbows. Smith did throw the harder punches
ReplyDeleteI'm really not sure how anyone could say the decision was a "robbery" or that Smith "clearly" won- as has been written elsewhere. That's absurd.
ReplyDeleteThe fact is Guerrero was dominating the fight in rounds 4 and 5 after winning at least 2 or the first 3 rounds. Smith then rallied and caught Fernando with a well timed punch. I think he clearly won the last 3 rounds, but did he win 6 of the 10 rounds? No.
As for the low blows, Smith landed them repeatedly. Guerrero did throw a few, but the disparity in the amount thrown is key here.
I just re-watched the fight and there were no less than 35 low blows thrown by Smith. It was clearly part of a game plan to keep the old fighter in a fight with a young fighter. Great perserverance and grit on Guerrero's part. This fight will benefit him down the road. I don't think Smith won any more than 3 rounds.
