April 2 Has Two Beltway Cards!

The 2010 Edition of the "Awesome April of Beltway Boxing" begins with not one, but two cards on Friday, April 2.

Babie Girl Productions will have their card at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in DC and the card will feature Capitol Heights, MD super middleweight Henry "Sugar Poo" Buchanan, who is scheduled to take on veteran Clarence "Sonny Bono" Taylor of Wilmington, DE in the eight-round main event.

Buchanan (18-2, 12 KO's) fought his last bout at the Convention Center on October 24 and won an eight-round unanimous decision over Bobby Jordan. Taylor (14-24-4, seven KO's) is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision loss to undefeated Jonathan Nelson on January 30 in Tunica, MS.

The co-feature has undefeated Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell in another eight-round contest against Ryan Thompson of East Cleveland, OH. Mitchell (15-0-1, nine KO's) won an eight-round unanimous decision over Zack Page on December 20th at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD. Thompson (9-8, six KO's) was stopped in the second round by Donnell Holmes on May 16 in Raleigh, NC. Beltway Boxing fans may remember the last time Thompson was in the area. That was in September of 2007 when he knocked out Ernest Mazyck in the fourth round in Glen Burnie, MD.

Undefeated Oxon Hill, MD light heavyweight Alexander "The Great" Johnson (8-0, three KO's) returns to action in what could be a tough six-round matchup against Toms River, NJ's William Gill. Johnson is coming off a four-round unanimous decision over Otganbayer Daivii on October 24 in DC. Gill doesn't have the best won-loss record (9-24, seven KO's) but has given some solid prospects trouble, including Mike Paschall (two tough losses) Richard Stewart (Gill stopped him in the sixth round) and Carlos DeLeon, Jr. (lost an eight-round unanimous decision). Gill, however, has lost seven of his last eight.

Columbia, MD middleweight Tony "Mo Better" Jeter is also on the card in a four-round contest against York, SC's Vincent Robbins. This will be the first bout for Jeter (8-2, seven KO's) since registering the 2009 Beltway Boxing Knockout of the Year -- a first-round decimation of Keith Gross on September 26 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. The win was Jeter's fourth straight. Robbins (3-8-2, three KO's) has lost four straight by knockout, with his last three being stopped in the first round.

The card will also feature the pro debut of DC light heavyweight Thomas Williams, Jr. The son of former heavyweight contender Thomas "Top Dawg" Williams was an amateur standout, winning the regional Golden Gloves last year.

There will also be a six-round matchup for the vacant WBF Female Welterweight title. Molly McConnell of Portland Oregon (10-1, five KO's) will take on Hartford, CT's Adelita Irizarry (6-4, two KO's).

Also, there will be a special exhibition bout featuring two ladies who forged a special bond of friendship while participating in boxing workouts. Marlow Prado-Blankenship and Barbara Bartolomeo were featured in a Washington Post article by Les Carpenter in December of 2009. The link to this article can be found here:

Meanwhile, Ballroom Boxing's April 2 show at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD has, so far, a number of six-round contests. Undefeated Baltimore middleweight Cecil McCalla returns quickly to action, as he takes on Asheboro, NC veteran Marcos "The Terminator" Primera.

McCall (11-0, four KO's) just fought on March 6 in Charlotte, NC and won a six-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Gary Lynch. Primera (20-20-2, 13 KO's) has lost five of his last six, but his last six opponents have a combined won-loss record of 85-2-1. The one win in that stretch was an eight-round TKO over then-undefeated Curtis Stevens in July of 2006.

There is a cruiserweight rematch on this card between Suitland, MD's Venroy July and Fred McClinton of Winston-Salem, NC. The two fought at Fight Night at the Washington Hilton and Towers in DC and fought to a four-round draw. Both have won bouts since their first encounter. July (3-0-1, two KO's) scored a second-round TKO over Kevin Johnson on the last Ballroom card on January 29. McClinton (2-1-1, one KO) won by first-round disqualification over DC's Kareem Wilson on January 23 in Winston-Salem.

(Local aside: Wilson is now 0-4 and has been disqualified in three of those losses.)

The card also marks the return of Glen Burnie, MD junior middleweight Lenwood "Mr. Composure" Dozier who will face Devarise Crayton of Orlando, FL in another six-round bout.

Dozier (5-1-1, two KO's) has not fought since suffering his first pro loss -- a third-round TKO against Ken Dunham on June 5 in Westminster, MD. Crayton (6-8-2, two KO's) battled to a four-round draw against Roberto Lopez on December 4 in Miami, FL.

Also on the card will be undefeated York, PA super featherweight Carney "Beeper" Bowman (14-0, six KO's) who will face Jason Rorie of Winston-Salem (5-6-2, two KO's). Bowman stopped Delvin Placencia in the third round on August 1 in York. Rorie will try for a better result this time at Michael's. On the last Ballroom Boxing card on January 29, Rorie lost a tough six-round split decision to Thomas Snow.

  1. "Robbins (3-8-2, three KO's) has lost four straight by knockout, with his last three being stopped in the first round."

And Tony Jeter is fighting this guy. Imagine that! And who is surprised?

  2. Why is the commission allowing a guy with those aweful credentials to even fight? Thats a disgrace!

    ReplyDelete
  3. p i T i f u l - with the T standing for Tony Jeter. And that's not a knock on the show, the promoter, or the matchmaker because I am sure Tony Jeter made this fight for himself.

Robbins has three wins, 1 over a guy who made his debut; 1 over a guy who was 1-1-1 named Guthy who can't really fight; and 1 over a guy who was 2 and 10.

Robbins has lost to terrible guys too and been stopped by them as well. One guy was 5 and 10 and the other guy was 3 and 14 and they stopped him.

And here's big bad Tony Jeter 8 wins, 2 losses, 7KO's. Over 100 amateur fights and numerous titles. The baddest amateur around since Sugar Ray! Even signed by Sugar Ray himself! When are you going to fight somebody that will actually fight back Tony? Still won't even fight John Terry will you?

Tony will stop this guy in the first round then he will run and jump on the ropes and pound his chest like he's the next coming of Mike Tyson and like he did something special.

Tony, you call yourself a real pro fighter? You're an abomination to this great sport. You're one of the fighters that Cujo was referring to when he said he was going to clean up the garbage in boxing.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread and I'm not going to post another thing on this subject, I just had to get this off my chest. If you love and respect this great sport, fights like these have to make you sick and they should be criticized to the Nth degree. Pitiful.

    Signed,

Do I Even Need To Say It!

P.S. - see you on the 20th in real fights against real fighters!

  4. I agree, and that was real funny the way u put it, please post some more. Laughing my A off

  5. That is pretty bad esp if your going to run at the mouth or be critical of other fighters.
I think what Tony is attempting to do is make his record look good to land a posssibe big money bout.
And can someone clear up something for me:Didn't Tonys last opponent train in the same gym as Tony?Because if so I find that REALLY disgraceful.
There are so many decent fights that could be made that really aren't being made-thats why March 20 is so interesting-a match-up between 4 area fighters who are tough AND WILLING to step up and meet one another.Someones going to win and someones going to lose but I respect all those fighters for at least stepping up.

  6. why do u think jeter had to take his show on the road and fight in VA and DC? thats bc pannella wont put up with his garbage. pat may have let him fight gross but he wouldnt have let him fight this guy thats 4 sure. pat knows what time it is!

  7. Thats Crazy, I would like to know what Comissioner approve this Fight? The Comissioners been looking out for them Guys for yrs. just look at Jeesie nicklow, Mike Pascal & Tony Jeter records, they all fight Bumbs, Jeese & Mike just fought real Fighters but look what happen to Jeesie, Pat Panneli make sure them Guys got easy opponents early in their carreer but he won't do that for the Black local Prospects, Pat want them to Fight Wars early in their career. Pat needs to be Fair to all the fighters, Black & White!

  8. tony wont get a big fight he doesnt have anyone of a good win under his resume

  9. Let me follow up on Boxingman's point. One of the issues with the DC card, according to people involved with the card, is that a number of boxers are not stepping up to fight bouts that, if successful, could do wonders to further their career.

There are boxers who were scheduled to be on the DC card (who shall remain nameless) who are not because they wanted to take on presumably safer competition.

As far as the last comment is concerned, talk to Paschall about his pro debut, talk to Nicklow about his first matchup against George Rivera and his two bouts against Anthony Little and talk to Jeter about his loss to James Shedrick and see if they don't say those bouts were wars. When it comes to the MD Commission, race doesn't play a factor!

  10. This card is a freaken joke. All these fighters are fighting bums. No one says they gotta fight the best fighters they can find but atleast let them have a pulse. Fighting guys with 11 losses under 500 is a joke. this card should be abolished.

    ReplyDelete
  11. jams shedeick is an opponent. someone for jeter to come in and beat and he gets stopped. that was no step up that was supposed o be a win for him and he gets knocked out. hes a loser.

  12. The DC card isn't horrible - Clarence Taylor is a good fighter and a very tough guy. Sugar Poo isn't a huge puncher so that fight will probably go the distance.

The heavyweight bout with Mitchell isn't bad either.

Neither is the bout with Johnson because William Gill can fight a little bit.

But the Jeter bout with Robbins TERRIBLE! HORRIBLE! DISGRACEFUL! UNCONSCIENTABLE!

re: Pat Pannella he is a damn fine commish and has his finger on the pulse of boxing. He knows the fighters, he knows the camps, he knows the sport and he respects the sport. He is difficult on matchups because that is what the sport deserves. He knows when a guy can really fight, he knows when a guy is limited. He knows when a guy may have a lousy record but can fight anyway and will approve the matchup. He's not any harder and black fighters than he is white fighters or mexican fighters or anyone else. It's just that you can take guys to VA, NC, DC and the commission is lax and they will approve almost anyone. And that's what gives loud mouthed Teddy Atlas the fuel to say the south has soft commissions and you can build a fighters record down there, every time a fighter south of the Mason Dixon line fights on ESPN2. He's even said it about Maryland fighters or fighters that have fought in Maryland. But that's a comment born out of ignorance when it comes to boxing in Maryland. Teddy Atlas is wrong about that one. You can't get anything past Pat P.

  21. this is a discrace as was the fight between Jargal and that dead body last weekend at the Patriot center.Maybe J.D. Brown ought to match Jeter against Jargal or maybe both of them can beat up on the same dead body at the same time.

  22. tony even said no to john terry he said he was too tough hahaha what a joke

  23. Gentleman, I understand your frustration with the level of opponents. But in fairness to some of the fighters, they often pay for their opponent. So why would you knock Tony Jeter or anyone else for that matter when they are paying for the guy they are fighting?

It makes ZERO,NONE,NADA, ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE to pay for a tough fight or let alone a loss.

So we can knock on them or talk
$h!t until we are blue in the face, but if they are paying for it then good luck to them.

Building a record is what any fighter, manager, promoter, or advisor does if they actually want to progress.

  24. The Giant KillerFriday, March 12, 2010

The last time Ryan Thomspon was in your area he knocked out the undefeated 7 foot giant.

This time he'll do the same to the undefeated Seth Mitchell.

    Cleveland in the house!

  26. Brian although I know you are starting to learn a little about the business now you are looking at this thing from a business stand point .Most of the people that are commenting are not compassionate to those who build their records or should I say their EGO'S by fighting sub parr
opposition. It is standard practice for everybody to have a few soft ones in the beginning but when you've had a descent armature career and five or six Pro fights then it's time to step out of the box and take a few chances. It sure sounds like you are making excuses for Anthony Jeter and the others around the beltway who are taking the easy way out. This is a sport for gladiators not impersonators.
Why don't you try to give posative comments on here to those
that are fighting real fights and not to the plastic people. If you uphold these peoples decisions to
operate like this you are no better than them. This thing seems to be centered around Tony Jeter
who was Koed and it destroyed him mentally. It's all in his mind and he could really be a good fighter again if he would stop trembling.
He had one of the best trainers in the busniess and could be on his way if he just put his mind to it.Alot of people have fear but it's those who step forward and face their fear that amount to something in this sport. It takes a little something called heart so I challenge Mr Jeter to step up to the plate and a few others as well.
    Peace out
    Schlim

  28. If someone pays for their fight how can that be a fair sporting situation? Isn't that a conflict of interest and wouldn't that be unfair and possibly even illegal?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Paying your opponents purse is not the same as paying for a person to lose purposely.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It is if you are paying walking punching bags.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Exactly .... like somebody is gonna pay to lose. Paying for walking punching bags is good way to put it. I still dont think its right and probably illegal. In a sport as potentially dangerous as boxing what would happen if fighter A paid fighter B, then they fought, they fighter B died. Talk about a can of worms!
