A world championship fight at the Patriot Center? - Lovey Land - Washington Times

This is a very interesting blog post by Thom Loverro of the Washington Times (and of "The Sports Fix" on ESPN 980). This was something else discussed at the post-fight press conference in Fairfax, VA last Saturday night.

  1. They have already had a world title fight at The Patriot Center, the WBF Title, when Lange beat Perry Ballard, Ballard was the WBF World Champ.

Of course he defended that same World Title at The Best Western in Winchester, VA.

    Does that count?

  2. With the exception of Perry Ballard and Joey Gilbert, Jimmy Lange has never had an opponent who has sold any measure of tickets. Given that his attendance average is roughly a hair under 5,000, he brings A LOT to the table. (And I'm pretty sure that Lange's biggest draw was the Joey Gilbert fight with something like 6,500, not the 5,000 cited by Lovero.)

Any promoter selling a Jimmy Lange fight, against a world title holder or contender or otherwise, has to give serious consideration to The Patriot Center as a venue.

Sure, depending on the opponent, the title fight might make more money if hosted elsewhere. But the numbers that Lange has proven thus far is an awfully big pre-sale for a promoter to off-set in a different venue.

  3. Anon: World title is
    -WBC
    -WBA
    -WBO
    -IBF
-Maybe the Ring title (which IMO should be the ONLY title; 4 governing bodies is ridiculous)

  4. why should there only be one or two world titles.
Don't you understand that there are thousands of boxers out there that never get considered for any kind of title shot simply because they aren't fortunate enough to be connected to one of the few manipulating organizations that completely run this sport .Why should only a few people benefit
from being involved in this sport.
You uneducated ignorasnt people only repeat what you hear somebody else say. you really don't have a clue as to what really goes on in boxing. How would you like to train fighters for years and watch other people, simply because they kissed enough ass or sold their
soul ( or should I say sold their fighters soul to get in the right
situation.climb the ladder of success in this sport.
There are many good fighters in this world and the sport shouldn't
be dictated by a few people.
