Son of Baltimore Fan Favorite Heads to UNLV on Football Scholarship!

Thought this was an interesting story to pass on. Many long-time Beltway Boxing fans may remember "The Runstopper" Courtney Bridget, a popular Baltimore cruiserweight from the mid-90's (4-1, one KO) who is now training a number a boxers in the area.

Apparently, Bridget's athletic genes have been passed down to his son, albeit in another sport. Matt Bracken of Baltimoresun.com's Recruiting Report is reporting that Courtney Bridget, Jr., a cornerback at Dunbar High School in Baltimore, recently made a verbal commitment to play football at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

The younger Bridget (6-3, 190) recently finished his senior season where he helped the Poets to a 13-1 season and the Maryland 1A State Championship. At cornerback, Bridget had 73 tackles and 10 interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Bridget transferred from Calvert Hall to Dunbar before his senior season. A number of schools including Maryland, Oregon and Duke were recruiting Bridget after his junior year. Oregon was high on his list, but Bridget made his commitment after his visit to UNLV.

“I can’t even put it into words how happy I am,” Bridget told Baltimoresun.com. “I’ll be playing for a program on the rise that was one game away from going to a bowl. They’re returning the most starters in the Mountain West conference next year. So I think they have a good shot to win that title. I just went out there and bonded with a couple of the other commitments. It was big and I felt at home.”

Bridget will participate in the Maryland Crab Bowl All-Star team on Saturday at Towson University's Johnny Unitas Stadium. The game (which starts at 1 PM) matches a team from Baltimore versus a squad from the DC-area Maryland suburbs.
