The International Boxing Organization and its USBO branch announced today that they have withdrawn its title recognition to Baltimore junior middleweight Ishmail "The Arsenal" Arvin in the wake of his controversial victory over Anthony "The Messenger" Thompson on August 15 at the Ibiza Nightclub.
What this sounds like (and I may be wrong) is that while the decision of the bout itself may not be overturned, the IBO will not recognize Arvin as the champion. so in essence, the title (as they used to say in pro wrestling) has been "held up."
Could this mean a rematch? That IMO seems like the only really fair solution.

ReplyDeleteDoes the money have to be returned? So if Arvin was stripped does Thompson automatically become the winner? Why would they just 'hold up' deciding who won? Seems process of elimination should prevail.

The IBO can strip the title but they can't overturn the decision.

cant arvin sue the ibo if the fight is still a win and they dont recognize that.

Whether Arvin can sue the IBO or not would probably depend on what's in the little black book of rules and regulations that they have.
ReplyDeleteBut, to tell the truth, it's not even worth the expense of hiring a lawyer to sue over since the IBO probably don't got no assets and that USBO belt isn't worth much future value that Arvin's camp can claim that they might be missing out on. Which is what a lawsuit is about anyway.
As for a Jimmy Lange fight... why would you want a tough, solid guy at his peak like Arvin? Lange's camp would be much better off importing some tough, but limited slickster that he could much more safely "overcome" after his customary slow start. A fan friendly fight with a desirable outcome.
Arvin's a tough match for anyone and you don't want the Patriot Center emptying out in silence.

ReplyDeleteYou're probably right about the matchup. I'm sure Old Man Lange wouldn't consider Arvin anytime soon. But I really think Lange stops Arvin. It would be a great fight because Lange is harder to miss than he is to hit, Lange wins a meaningful fight, and he's back to prospect status. Right now he's a glorified journeyman who sells tickets. Maybe there is something more for him if he's not held back. Anyway, looking forward to that fight and all the fights on the beltway calendar. Who is Lange going to fight anyway? Anybody know?

It would be nice to see Lange fight the winner of George Rivera vs. Jesse Nicklow. But the way boxing is, he'll probably fight the loser of that fight. It's a good fight either way.
