Thanks to the folks at DC Amateur Boxing.blogspot.com, who sent video of what many people are considering the best matchup of the Under-19 National Championships thus far -- The quarterfinal bout between Capitol Heights, MD's Gary Allan Russell and Edgewood, MD's Emmanuel Taylor. Taylor is in red and Russell is in white.

This is from DC Amateur Boxing's YouTube page that has received more than 900,000 hits since its inception just five months ago. The page is loaded with great video of many of our Beltway amateurs.

  2. Actually, it was 17-14 Allen. I know that people are saying he was robbed, but you if you understand computerized scoring - it's pretty hard to get a concerted effort together by all judges to affect the outcome. Judges have electronic devices to press a button when they see a scoring blow. It takes 3 officials clicking the button within a 2 second period to actually register as a "point".

Also, the score is shows live during the bout, so that either boxers or their corner can know exactly if they are up or down during the fight. Not to mention the crowd chanting "2 more points" to let Manny and his corner know he was within 2 points of tying the bout. It was simply a really great boxing match.

I'd love to see a rematch.

  4. even if they did give him two standing 8s, that wouldn't matter. A standing 8 count is still ONLY ONE POINT. You don't get any addl points for that in amateur boxing. Also, it is true that Allen was tired toward the end of the fight, so giving two ten second breaks in the action may have been a disadvantage for Manny. I think that Allen go up too much in the first round. He also picked it up at the very end of the bout. I bet that if they face each other again, Manny will be busier.
