Boxing Returns to DC August 8!

The Nation's Capital has not had a boxing card since Fight Night 2007 on November 3, but DC comes back in a big way with a card on Friday, August 8 at the Ibiza Nightclub, 1221 1st Street, NE, right below the intersection of New York Avenue and 1st Street.

This will be the maiden voyage for Major Heavy Hitters promotions, who say this will be the first in a monthly series. There are two more scheduled for September 12 and October 10.

The main event for the card will be a matchup for the vacant USBO Middleweight title as Baltimore's Ishmail "The Arsenal" Arvin (14-1-4, six KO's) takes on Anthony "The Messenger" Thompson of Philadelphia (23-2, 17 KO's)

One other bout has been signed -- a matchup of young undefeated light heavyweight prospects as Oxon Hill, MD's Alexander "The Great" Johnson (5-0, three KO's) battles Brooklyn, NY's Reggie "Concrete" La Crete (4-0-2, three KO's) in a six-round contest.

Beltway Boxers Reggie "The Mechanic" Holly, Mark "TNT" Tucker and Jaime "The Punisher" Palma are also scheduled to appear on the show.

  2. There are literally thousands of people that are at this club and have been going to this club for a while every night. It is a hugely successful, beautiful night club with many different rooms, all quite elagantly appointed. There is plenty of parking adjacent to the club and there will be plenty of security. This is a very high end night club and fight fans will get a first rate show in a beautiful spot. There will be more information on the bouts and the prices etc. soon.

  3. please tell me that Cassandra White has nothing to do with this show? If she is not involved-where can I purchase tickets at today?

  4. Chris, I'm sure the club itself is nice, but what about taking the Metro? Here's the walking distance: http://wmata.com/walkingMaps/WalkingMap.cfm?startLatitude=38%2E907263&startLongitude=%2D77%2E003969&endLatitude=38%2E905966&endLongitude=%2D77%2E005879&startName=NEW%20YORK%20AVENUE%20METRO%20STATION&Endname=1ST%20ST%20NE&FinalWalkOriginStopID=4567&Date=6/30/2008&Time=1040
Weren't there some shootings near NY Avenue fairly recently?

  6. Dude, relax. Thousands of people go to that club. Nobody is gonna jump out & shoot someone in front of thousands of people. Don't know if it's metro-accessible but take a friggin cab. Jesus.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yeah, really... some bandit is gonna jump out & shoot a midget in a George Mason t-shirt.

Come watch the fights man. Sounds like they'll be good ones.

  8. How safe is anywhere.? Does it need to be in Georgetown, or Capitol Hill, oh--people get shot and gangked there too.....dayum stay home then

  9. You know, I think I will go to this. Hell, it doesn't seem too bad a location and it's been too damn long since I've been to a live boxing card anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm from the South Bronx.

DC is highly over-rated in terms of danger.

... oh yeah, and it's fighters, too.

  11. kudos to everyone keepin' it real on that safety tip. exactly - how safe is anywhere?

    ReplyDelete
  12. the area is safe and the club has serious security. it is like going to any boxing match, and if their are problems it will probably be from somebody who came from far away, and not a resident of the neighborhood. the headquarters for XM radio are across the street.

  13. Acw when was the last time you were at a live boxing show.
I thought I saw you at the show in Winchester last year.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Nope, the last one I was at was at the Diego Corrales tribute show last October.

  15. when mark tucker and alexander johnson win they should fight eachother in their next fight

  16. You safety guys are a joke

    ReplyDelete
  17. yea, you cant even be safe in the Upper Marlboro jail...

    ReplyDelete
  18. that wasn't necessary.

  19. acw - if you're afraid of the hood, keep you azh home.

as the saying goes - "if you ain't from the hood, dont' go to the hood."

and i'll add - keep yourself in lily whiteville where the pedophiles, rapists, bomb makers, and meth labs are.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Okay! Let's not insult each other's neighborhoods.

The Ibiza is not too far from Union Station Metro. It's a good neighborhood and it will be a good card.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thanks Digital. I'll most likely go to this if it's not too expensive (and I don't think it would be).

  22. Hey annonamous, do you really thinkj that only white people do those things?
There were a group of guys from the District who were busted for
manufacturing Meth out in this area
about ten months ago.And guess what they weren't white.

    Officer Clatterbuck

  23. acw started the insult when he questioned the 'safeness' of a place out side of his comfort zone.
but i didn't see where you checked HIM on that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't see where the insult is... He seems to be genuinely concerned that he may be shot at due to the effect of ongoing media sensationalization.

If you feel insulted, then blame the media, blame the hood, blame the gangs, blame the shooters, but you can't blame ACW for feeling insecure...

    ReplyDelete
  25. like i said - he can leave his "insecure" asz home.

    ReplyDelete
  26. yea officer clatterbuckerruckerwill protect you!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. officer clatterbuck cant fight, cant protect his own self.

  28. Nobody is going to shoot you, but beware of Chris, he will rip off the fighters and if you are standing near them, you get robbed too!

  29. just to beat a dead horse. the closest metro station in NY Ave/FL Ave (Red Line). Get off on the north side of the site (N St) and walk one block west. On one side you have the ATF (which has 24hr security) on the other you have an active construction site. Safe walk...enjoy the fights.

    ReplyDelete
  30. anon said: "like i said - he can leave his "insecure" asz home..."

And what... Getting defensive about the hood don't show "insecurity"?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thank you boxbible and juxtaexposed.
    I'll be going to this.

    ReplyDelete
  32. why should i be insecure about where I live? that jerk has an issue about where I live. certainly NOT me.

aren't you a boxer/former boxer acw? use your cat eye. use your cat eye.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Silk- As always, please report the name of any fighter that has been ripped off by Chris. How does a matchmaker rip someone off anyway? Doesn't the commission oversee that each fighter gets paid? And if the fighter gets ripped off in anyway can't he go to the commission? If you are not a total hater, bs person, then give us a name or a situation, or even better give us your real name.

  34. acw is just another one of these writers who have never fought but think they are a boxing expert. Boxbile is another and there are plenty others on here that criticize (maybe not on this post but on others) fighters but they wouldnt dare put on the gloves

    ReplyDelete
  35. To the last anonymous: yeah, you're right, I've never fought. I have tremendous respect for those who do though.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Actually, I had thought that ACW had made some interesting posts and when he said that he was coming to the Major Heavy Hitters show, that I would look him up. Clearly the people who are regularly on the site, who are interested in what is going on here, and don't spend their time being haters, are what makes this site valuable.

In response to "Silk" who clearly has it in for me, I will be glad at any point to hear exactly who I have wronged in this sport. Any time. And if he wants to come forward and discuss that like a man that would be terrific. Otherwise, he should just shut up. And recognizing that he is a hater, he better really get ready to hate, as the next year is going to be one of the most exciting that this area has ever had. First you have Ballroom Boxing which clearly is back on its game putting on great fights and it will have its usual six great shows, plus this year we will be doing the charity show to benefit the Jonathan Ogden Foundation in October. In addition, Ballroom will be starting a MMA series in late February and people are already lining up for season tickets. It will be huge and together with the boxing series will create an even more powerful force in the combat sports in Maryland.

Then you have the new series of shows promoted by Major Heavy Hitters. As you can see from the first main event and the Alexander Johnson fight, that there is a serious promotional company about to emerge out of the desert of DC boxing. They are committed to doing a show a month, they own an incredible two floor venue which will be the best place in the area to watch fights ( as well as drink, eat and dance!!), and most importantly their goal is to become more than a regional promoter. If I can make the matches to fit the plans that they have, watch out, as they will have a national and international impact within 18 months.

Now those are just two promoters in the area. When you factor that in with the promotional boom that has been going on in Virginia, the 2008-2009 season is going to be the most active and exciting one that we have had in a long time. So let the haters do what they do, stay home and be angry. And everyone else can read what is going on on BATB, get out to some or all of the great shows that will be taking place, and enjoy a great season of combat sports.

PS oh and also, the last tv show here was the Peterson brothers from the DC Armory. Look for Ballroom and Major Heavy Hitters to be on the internet and look for Major Heavy Hitters to bring several different networks to the shows at Ibiza. I am telling you now things are going to be very exciting in Beltway sports world.

pps. Sometime in the next week or two Gary will be doing an interview with the names behind Major Heavy Hitters. Make sure to listen to what they have to say and you will see why I am so excited about the potential with this series.

  37. Chris-Sounds cool. If you'll be at the August show, I'll have Digital introduce us (if he wouldn't mind). 1 show a month? I'm down with that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. ain't that a ....?

acw says he's "down with that." using hood language, but afraid to go TO the hood.

careful acw - you might get jacked for perpetrating a hoodster. ha, ha, ha.

    ReplyDelete
  39. To the person who keeps coming on here saying writers can't be boxing experts because they've never laced up the gloves, why don't you shut up because you've clearly never been a professional writer. Let the writers do their job, and you do your job.

  40. this just in - woman attacked in centreville.

acw - do you feel safe?

    ReplyDelete
  41. oops - what? this just in..

    news channel 4 reports. ...
white serial killer caught in illinois. news reports he was a meth addict and wanted to kill people.

another kidnapping and sex assault case coming out of vermont. caucasian man attacks 15 year old girl.

heard yesterday that a guy (also white) tried to blow up the World Bank in DC. he, of course, was unsuccesful. (maybe officer clatterback can verify - give info)

and acw doesn't want to go downtown because he thinks the hood is a bad place.

just like one poster asked - how safe is anywhere?

may we ALL be safe, WHEREVER we are!

Sorry to burst your daydreams, but am a product of NYGG, the toughest Golden Glove circuit in the US apart from the National tournament.

When I was fighting, we had to fight 4-5 times to get to the finals. 139lbers fought 5-6 fights.

I remember one year when I was fighting Featherweight, we had the Puerto Rican champ, the Dominican Republic champ and the previous year's Novice champ and Open champ, altogether. I ended up facing the PR champ in my first match, which I lost, but I took the last round big. He eventually went on to win the Gloves that year.

Never turned pro but sparred with many pros, so I can throw an insult and got no problem throwing on the gloves to back it up. But not more than 2-3 rounds nowadays, especially since I'm hovering around 160lbs!

And maybe if you haven't noticed, because haters have trouble with this kind of thing, I do send out plenty praise when I think its due.

  44. tell it to acw. he didn't know.

  45. Arvin is taking a big step up fighting Thompson. Thompson was a great amateur, winning every national title there was, taking a silver in the '01 World Championships in Belfast and a silver at the Goodwill Games in Australia. If he had stayed amateur, he would have easily made the '04 Olympic team and would have medaled. He turned pro young, about 19 because he had two kids to feed and got a decent offer. He can box. Arvin is good too but doesn't have the background of Thompson.
    May the best man win.

  48. If anyone hasn't been to one of Mark Tucker's fights I highly advise you go to the one coming up the 26th of july in York, PA! You would enjoy it. Mark is very good at what he does. And he wouldnt let you down. You will be amused every second of most likely 2 min.
