I have been bombarded with a lot of news items in the last 48 hours, so I decided to put them all in one post.
For those who could not hear the latest BATB Post-Fight Wrap-Up, there is some news about the Friday, June 13 Baltimore Pro Boxing card at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore. The main event is slated to be a rematch between undefeated Baltimore middleweight Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow and Temple Hills, MD's Jason Champion. Nicklow defeated Champion by a six-round unanimous decision on December 7, 2006 in Pikesville.
Nicklow (17-0-1, seven KO's) is coming off a solid third-round TKO over Chad Greenleaf on April 18 in Pikesville. Champion (4-3, three KO's) lost to both Nicklow and Tim Coleman in consecutive outings before breaking his two-bout losing streak with a first-round KO over Kenneth Meeks on May 18, 2007 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD.
Also on the card, Middle River, MD's Tony "Cyclone" Cygan will battle Akron, OH's Anthony Little. Cygan (12-2, seven KO's) has not fought since participating in the 2007 Beltway Boxing Bout of the Year against John Mackey on December 7 in Pikesville. Cygan lost a six-round unanimous decision. This will be the third trip to Maryland for Little (7-10-1, one KO). Little lost twice to Nicklow by unanimous decision in Ocean City and Pikesville. Little will also be trying to break an eight-bout winless streak (0-7-1).
Clinton, MD super middleweight Demetrius Davis will also be on the card as he will battle undefeated Tommy Karpency of Adah, PA. Davis (18-14-4, seven KO's) is coming off a solid performance, winning an eight-round majority decision over Brian Norman on May 3 at the District Heights Municipal Center in District Heights, MD. Karpency (11-0, seven KO's) stopped veteran Etienne Whitaker in the third round on April 26 in Morgantown, WVA.
Also slated for this card are undefeated Eldersburg, MD cruiserweight Mark "TNT" Tucker and Ellicott City, MD cruiser Robert McConnell.
Also on June 13, "The Berlin Bomber" Joshua Snyder of Berlin, MD will battle the undefeated and aforementioned John "No Mercy" Mackey of Montgomery, AL, by way of DC at the Catholic Youth Center in Scranton, PA. The two co-feature bouts on this card are scheduled to be on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights. The Snyder-Mackey bout is slated to be the main swing bout, meaning it stands at least a 50-50 chance of getting on TV.
Snyder (6-3, three KO's) has won four of his last five bouts, including a fourth-round TKO over Charles Norwood on February 23 in Winchester, VA. Mackey (9-0, three KO's) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision over Alexander Mancera on February 8 in Dover, DE.
Let's go back a week to Friday, June 6, where the changes to the card at the Legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia continue. DC super featherweight Ron "Teflon" Boyd will not participate on that card and he has been replaced by undefeated Laurel, MD super featherweight Ikem "The Warrior" Orji. Orji (3-0, one KO) will take on fellow undefeated fighter Gerald Smith of Philadelphia (2-0, one KO).
And if that wasn't enough, we should mention that cruiserweight Harvey Jolley of Detroit, MI, who knocked out Jonathan Felton this past Thursday night at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, has been inserted into the main event bout on this card. Jolley (8-8-1, five KO's) will face undefeated Adam Harris of Worcester, MA (10-0, seven KO's) in a scheduled eight-round contest. Jolley replaces Elieser Castillo who broke his hand in training.
The co-feature remains Tyrell Samuel of Baltimore (9-2, five KO's) against Jules Blackwell of Phoenixville, PA (7-0-2, two KO's) in an eight-round contest. Baltimore featherweight Darrell Martin will also be on the card.
Baltimore cruiserweight Corey "Black Ice" Cummings won a six-round unanimous decision over John Douglas last night in Monticello, NY. So that sets the stage for his Friday, June 20th 10-round bout against former world champion Montell "Ice" Griffin in Chicago, IL. Cummings comes into the Griffin bout with a record of 16-2, 12 KO's while Griffin is 48-7, 30 KO's. There are bouts on the card that will televised on Telefutura, but we're not sure that Cummings-Griffin will be one of them.
However, there will be a Beltway Boxer on TV on Friday, June 20th. That will be Riverdale, MD heavyweight Horace "The Reason" Grant. Grant (12-1, seven KO's) will make his national TV debut from the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas as he takes on Augusta, GA's Kevin "Big Man" Burnett (12-1-1, eight KO's). According to the schedule, this bout will be the co-feature on an ESPN2 doubleheader of heavyweight bouts. The main event matches Alonzo Butler and Friday "The 13th" Ahunanya.
To reiterate an earlier post, that means at least three Beltway Boxers will be on national TV during the seven-day period between June 20 and June 27: Grant on the 20th, Henry "Sugar Poo" Buchanan on June 25th from the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, CA (also on ESPN2) and Anthony Peterson on June 26 from Las Vegas on Versus. If Cummings makes the Telefutura broadcast on June 20, that will, of course, make four.
And add this information: One of our very own ring announcers, the one and only Henry "Discombobulating" Jones will be traveling to Houston, TX and the Reliant Center Complex to announce a Friday, July 18 card that will feature Perry Ballard taking on former world champion Hector "Macho" Camacho, Sr. The card is slated to appear on DirecTV.
I guess this is as good a place as any to ask this: Any update on the show at Henderson Hall, or is that officially not happening?
ReplyDeleteThat show is officially off.
ReplyDeletePerry Ballard?
ReplyDeleteIs this the guy from West virginia
by way of Lees burg by way of
Winchester by way of who knows where next.
OK Digital what is your real opinion on this fight and don't
pull any punches .
Perry "The Mullett" Ballard
ReplyDeleteThat guy rules!
The fight finally gets another name on Ballard's record but it's not a fight that will lead to anything else.
ReplyDeletePerry is a smart guy & entertaining. He makes business moves in boxing, nothing else. Can he fight? NO, obviously. BUT, he does train hard & come to fight. Only thing is, he fights bums until some money & publicity comes along (ie. Jimmy Lange, Macho Camacho). He'll never take the small step up bouts before the guys that can really fight because even a small step up would get him knocked out. End of story. Good businessman, Poor fighter.
ReplyDeleteBishop
No offense to Ballard, who is a great guy, especially since he kept his promise to help Discombobulating Jones get a shot on a good-sized card.
ReplyDeleteBut there are some interesting matchups noted in this post and I can't believe that those aren't getting some feedback.
very well put Bishop! Perry Ballard cant fight or shit, just like Mike Sawyer and that guy who got ko'd last night by Mundy. But smart business man he is, making more money than most of beltway fighters. that makes me sick!
ReplyDeleteDamn that sucks about the show being off...I don't think I've gone to a live show yet this calendar year :(
ReplyDeleteI've seen Grant before...just a beast, with POWER. Should be interesting to see how he does...How good's Burnett?
Are both Petersons fighting on that card, or just Anthony?
Burnett is pretty decent but it's a good step up for Grant.
ReplyDeleteOnly Anthony Peterson is on this card. Lamont is fighting on a card on Showtime on July 5.
If Perry Ballard is smart enough to pull off his sh*t, more power to him!
ReplyDeleteIf he were managing some of the better Beltway boxers instead of covering the boxing-barren area he's from, things would probably really be happening.
Too bad there's so many mickey-mouse managers ruining potential world class fighters in the DC-Baltimore Area.
And besides, he did take that step up from fighting bums to fighting a mediocre fighter... at the Patriot Center.
What weight is Vaughn Davis fight at? Where has Tim Coleman been?that boy can fight.
ReplyDeleteGeorge Rivera or Mike will knock out Mullet Ballard.
Davis is at super middleweight although he will probably end up fighting at 175 pounds.
ReplyDeleteColeman, I heard, moved to Las Vegas where his father lives.
Boxbible, I read your posts often & you know you shit. However, if you read my post carefully, I said take a fight for some money & publicity. I think we all know that Jimmy Lange represents both of those things, regardless of what you think of him as a fighter. My point is, he will take NO RISK whatsoever before taking a bout against a guy that can fight & get him exposure. Hell, I bet Larry Brothers or Matt Hill would stop him & Spenser Harsley would box circles around him. Point being, good businessman, poor fighter.
ReplyDeleteBishop
I never hear Digital say it like it is about this guy.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, Ballard is technically not a Beltway Boxer as he lives and was born in West Virginia.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, the facts are the facts. Everyone knows that Ballard is a boxer who doesn't have to do this as he has a good job and has two master's degrees.
As I said before, this is a business fight against a name fighter. It is not worth my commenting on, other than the fact that Discombobulating Jones will be doing the ring announcing.
Anyone who has seen Ballard's record knows that the only fighter he has faced with a winning record is Jimmy Lange and he lost. Ballard is a very popular fighter who is not technically sound. But he is a heck of a businessman.
Bishop said: "Point being, good businessman, poor fighter."
ReplyDeleteNo argument...
Digital said: "Ballard is a very popular fighter who is not technically sound. But he is a heck of a businessman."
Perry Ballard for Congress!!!
Why do people hate on Ballard? I've been to several of his fights and this guy is tough. He might of lost to Lange but he kept coming forward, took a beating, and didn't quit unlike some recent beltway fighters. He threw his shoulder out in his last fight against Clybourn and went on to win fighting with just his left.
ReplyDeleteAs Digital put it, everyone knows that Ballard does not have to do this so why would he waste his time with the small bouts when he doesn't have to!! I bet most boxers would skip the step up bouts for the chance to fight someone like Hector "macho" Camacho.
Thank God Ballard is from WEST Virginia and not where I'm from! What a disgrace! I think it will be the only time in my life that I've ever pulled for Camacho!
ReplyDeletewe all know Perry is not a good boxer and has less than 0% chance winning against 46year old has been Camacho.
ReplyDeleteEveryone is just jealous because Ballard is smart enough to skip the small steps for a big payday!!! It's really sad that people have nothing better to do than blog about someone they don't even know. What a disgrace???? I bet he's accomplished more than you ever will.
ReplyDeletePerry, you are a bum! accomplished more than me? I was super lightweight champion of the world you bum. how much are you getting paid for this bout? $5000?
ReplyDeletethats how much I got paid for fighting bums when I was coming up after 8th pro fight. dont make me laugh, you bum.
Super Lightweight Champion. What a joke.
ReplyDeleteDo you really think Ballard gives a shit about $5,000. Hey Champ. If you are so bad, sign your name to the blog your broke ass chicken shit loser. Drop your name and I will personally call Perry to tell him that a broke ass former champion is calling him out....
I am sure he could drum up a nice pay check for you. He could turn a 4 round fighter into a 12 round money maker.

What a truly interesting bunch of comments. Some are on target, while some so far off the mark it makes me wonder if their talking about the same Perry Ballard. Oh and for the total genius who is glad Perry is from WEST Virginia, Dude there a was reason we left your sorry VA asses 145 years ago. Nuff said. And just to make sure there's at least some accuracy in reporting, Perry makes enough coin from this fight to quit his 6 figure non-boxing job via the two Masters Degrees and go fishing for a long, long time. He fights because he loves the sport, the training and its fans. He wins because when he was 9 and nearly died (I remember the panic in our house that day.) God taught him how to fight back. He spent years working within the local little leagues (begging our mom who wasn't sure it was a good idea) to change from a skinny little kid to a first rate athelete and sportsman. While Camacho is a great fighter he's hardly the biggest challenge Perry has faced in his life. He will bring his kind'a fight to Houston. I've watched him train. Folks, it gonna be a worthy show.
ReplyDeleteRoss Ballard - Perry's eldest brother
you guys are a disgrace talking about someone you dont even know. i dont understand. half of you guys would never say the stuff to my uncle perrys face that you guys say on here. what a bunch of posers. you guys think your hot stuff. but i bet if you put his band account to yours. you'd be the fool. keep on talking about him. if that makes you feel better. but if you've never met the guy. then you should learn a little bit. he may be cocky. but he has backed it up. what. he lost to macho. he'll fight again. and he will probly win and lose again. everyone does it.
